We never expected to hear Angel Haze on a Cat Power track, but Ryan Hemsworth makes the pairing seem completely natural in his rework of "Manhattan." Hemsworth takes the tightly wound original and opens it up a bit so that it feels like it there was always a hip-hop beat buried in the song. Angel Haze can't help but kill it. Listen below. Ryan Hemsworth did a beautiful and moody remix of Cat Power's "Manhattan." Even better, he got Angel Haze to rap on it. Featured on BBC Radio 1, Ryan himself released the radio rip link and download over the weekend. It's easy to miss good releases over the weekend when you're at brunch or out at a bar watching the Heat lose, but I couldn't let you miss this. So much goodness. MP3: Cat Power - "Manhattan" (Ryan Hemsworth Remix featuring Angel Haze) |

Ryan Hemsworth's remix work is one part of what makes him a favorite of ours. His ability to make any track his own is pretty goddamn impressive. I mean, you could throw one after another on a mix and it'd sound like a proper album. That's only part of the reason we love his latest remix, which is of Cat Power's "Manhattan". Rather than going solo this time, he's brought along Angel Haze, who spits a slick guest verse to open the track. This pairing might seem odd at first, but you might be surprised to [...]

Clif's top ten list for 2012 with twenty others receiving honorable mention: 10. Cat Meat – Cat Meat We previewed Cat Meat’s self-titled debut as a Friday Free Feature on November 9, and it’s been in constant rotation between my iPod and car stereo. A complex, experimental alt. country/folk album that claims influences such as Wilco, Sparklehorse and Califone; the classic psychedelic experimenalist, Captain Beefheart; and the legendary bluesmen Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie McTell. When you listen, they’re all there in subtle drips, drabs and dollops. [...]

In this edition: Some Real Ramblings about Cat Power, Kool Moe Dee and Big Daddy Kane. Plus videos from Canyons, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, WHY?, and Wilco. Some Real Ramblings For a long time, I've called the Sunday post "Ramblings & Considerations." There was a time when I actually rambled. Today, I will revive that tradition... I've been wanting to write this for a while. It's a bit of a dump on myself. I am afraid the old professor is a bit [...]

Something has changed about Cat Power 's Chan Marshall and it's not just her hair. Sun is her first album of original material since 2006, and has been much lauded for its new direction. Since emerging in the lo-fi scene, Marshall 's most recent records - You Are Free and The Greatest - have justified her position as a bona-fide indie darling by exhibiting her introversion as a spectacle, often taking shape as stripped-down overindulgence. [...]

A gorgeous bonus track named "Fire" from Cat Power's latest Sun has hit the web. The song comes with a purchase of the album on iTunes and easily holds up against the strongest from record. It makes you wonder what other kind of goodies didn't make the extremely fantastic LP. Follow the link below to stream it. Stream: Cat Power - Fire

In June Cat Power posted up a brand new track titled " Cherokee ". The result saw the internet go crazy for Chan Marshall's return, and rightly so. Today though she's posted up a new version of the track along with a remix of it from Nicolas Jaar . Check out both the rework and the new version below and look out for Cat Power's new album, Sun , which drops on the 4th of September via Matador .

The precocious French producer Nicolas Jaar gets a hold of one of the two pre-released tracks from Cat Power 's upcoming album Sun . The songstress' " Cherokee " is all at once a musical layer cake, with a gramophone sounding lead voice in the forefront, bolstered by an aerial chorus and a zesty treat with punchy drums and and enthralling rhythm. Jaar fades out all these instrumental and background elements, slowing down the sound to a slow motion speed and flushing out the ethereal vocals making for a [...]
We have a double dose of Cat Power this morning and it comes by way of the release of her rad new single, "Cherokee". The original version, which appears on her new Sun album, has a '90s-influenced sound to it, what with its driving beat and overall smoky air. But the remix? It's all haunted churches and dust bunny-filled mansions thanks to Nicolas Jaar , who knows a thing or two about murdering remixes . Sigh. Listen/download both tracks below.
Cat Power previews another track from her first album in six years, Sun . We've already heard the excellent first single "Ruin," now you can listen to the just as great album opener "Cherokee." You can check that out here . Sun is out September 4th through Matador . MP3 : Cat Power - Ruin Tracklist: [...]
No surprise that Sun , the first collection of original material in six years from Cat Power -- aka Chan Marshall -- is quickly shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticpated albums of the of the year. And the first bits of music from the project aren't exactly tamping down the enthusiasm. Lead single "Ruin" entices with spry, overlapping piano lines that serve as an enticing hook before the song kicks off with an insistent beat, some chunky guitar riffs and Marshall's syncopated vocal delivery. It is, as the song [...]
