and here's Arcade Fire accepting the $30,000 for winning the Polaris Music Prize: Like I said on twitter , I think they're worthy winners but Arcade Fire winning yet another award is so unexciting from a PR point of view. And just curious: do people outside of Canada think they are the best rock band in the world right now like one of my co-workers claimed the other day? Leave your thoughts on that in the comments below. And if you're curious about my thoughts on all the albums [...]

CBC has got the shortlist for Canada's Polaris Music Prize : Arcade Fire | The Suburbs Austra | Feel It Break Braids | Native Speaker Destroyer | Kaputt Galaxie | Tigre et diesel Hey Rosetta! | Seeds Ron Sexsmith | Long Player Late Bloomer Colin Stetson | New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges Timber Timbre | Creep On Creepin' On The Weeknd | House Of Balloons You'd normally say the Arcade Fire would be the one to beat, but given they've been given mainstream prizes south of the border, they might pay the price. [...]
Hello folks! Ever had a band stay with you ? Every been in a band and had trouble finding a place to stay after the show? Last summer, I did a freelance piece for CBC Radio 3 on this topic. It aired today on Lanarama on CBC Radio 3. Scott Wood and Couch Surfing They usually put up these projects on their blog, so I can link to it, but they didn't this time. Sadz. I will put up my rough edit so you can [...]

Toronto - It was with much surprise that we learned about our recent nomination for CBC Radio 3 Searchlight's Top Canadian Music Site . It was an even bigger surprise when we made the cut for the top 60 list last Thursday. We consider it our distinct pleasure and honour to be listed among esteemed colleagues such as Chromewaves.net , Sticky Magazine , Herohill and Indie Music Filter . We didn't really expect to make it this far, so I would like to thank the small factory in China I paid off to continuously [...]

My pick for "Track Of The Day" is up on CBC Radio 3 . It was a tough decision on who I wanted to pick for my track of the day. All in all I went for this Ottawa band. Anyways check out the track of the day and for those curious on what I sound like on here . Also vote for your favorite Canadian music website. The voting ends this Wednesday.
I love my country. I love its diversity, its expansiveness, and I love its distinctive culture. Through writing this website over the last four and a half years, I've come to know a great number of musicians who are inspired by Canada, and in turn inspire me to write about them. Quick Before It Melts has also introduced me to a strong and supportive network of like-minded bloggers and music lovers, and though I've never met them face-to-face, I consider many of them to be good friends. Earlier this week, CBC Radio 3 launched their new Searchlight [...]

Vote for your favorite this year! I got this idea from Earbuds and Ticketstubs . To all the nominees nominated for CBC Radio 3 ''s Searchlight Contest. What outrageous things are you willing to do to win this competition? Go on http://r3.ca/0CvO to vote for you favorite Canadian music website. For dream sake "if I win", I would hold a big show (depending on which Ottawa venue to use) on winning the contest and get whatever band is available to play. Outrageous part will be [...]

Vote for your favorites this year! I was not aware that my site was nominated in CBC Radio 3 's Searchlight Competition for Canada's Best Music Website. Today of all days being Chinese New Years (Year of the Rabbit) and now this. I don't know how my site was picked out since I read on the day it was announced that mostly people listed these sites: Herohill , Chromewaves , iheartmusic , QBiM , Earbuds and Ticketstubs , Exclaim , Southern Souls , [...]

Totally adore this sweater. It was a lovely Sunday afternoon at Raw Sugar Cafe . It happened to be a book launch for CBC Radio 3 personality Grant Lawrence . The book is called Adventures in Solitude (title from The New Pornographers's Challengers). There was a visual presentation of photos taken at Desolation Sound. Grant read three different parts of the book. There was a short video of the area too. Andy Swan did a special live [...]
Earlier this week, CBC Radio 3 released the nomination lists for their annual Bucky Awards, which celebrate the best in independent Canadian music, and usually focuses on the indie pop that makes up pretty much all of the station's playlist. The winners are selected by fans and listeners, and you can head on over to the CBC Radio 3 website to vote for yourself . The awards are spread out over ten categories: Best Song, Most Canadian Song, Best Live Act, Best Reason To Learn French, Sexiest Artist, Best New Band [...]

It was a busy fourth day at Pop Montreal. I started off the day checking out Puces Pop . Puces Pop is Montreal's largest do-it-yourself festival where people can come and celebrate all types of independent creation! All I can say was there was alot of people there. Interesting to see what unique stuff that comes out from it. Also it was the day I actually tried out the Bixi bikes . Those bikes are so fun! I went to the Notman House for the [...]

Finally here is part 3 of my adventures at NXNE . The events that took place on June 19, 2010. Not alot happened during the afternoon. I decided to take a small break and do some shopping. It was also the same day as the Toronto Island show with Pavement and Broken Social Scene. I did check out the Young Dundas Square show. Heard abit of Surfer Blood and abit of Wavves. Met the lead singer of Surfer Blood and apparently thought my name was Nick. I wasn't getting into Wavves [...]

Broken Social Scene is about to play my dream show this weekend in Toronto. They'll be playing with Pavement **sigh** , Band of Horses, and Beach House at the Toronto Island Festival. Have one on me, guys! Seems as though that "Texico Bitches" is the song of choice that they're performing on the media outlets. You can watch them perform an amped up version on Fallon below, or listen to a more tame version over at CBC Radio 3 . Broken Social Scene-Texico Bitches (live on Fallon) [mp3]

We're back -and better than ever! I decided to start 2010 with one of my favourite Vancouver bands right now, Said The Whale . This is also one of the funniest interviews I have done. I reached Tyler Bankcroft (wearing the blue t-shirt in the middle of the sofa) on his fuzzy cellphone from the bowels of Said The Whale 's Gastown rehearsal space. He did his best to remain diplomatic when I asked him what it [...]

I am going on a whim and review Toronto's F**ked Up (Sorry I like to censor myself) Couple Tracks 2002-2009. I am not really familiar with the band at all besides what they accomplished in 2009. One being winning the 2009 Polaris Music Prize. Two using the money from the prize to do a benefit Christmas single for a charitable organizations working to publicize the high disappearance rate of Aboriginal women in Canada While we either wait for the follow-up to Chemistry Of Common Life On January 26, 2010 Matador Records [...]
Owen Pallett 's highly anticipated follow-up to He Poos Clouds found it's way onto shelves last week (January 12th). Across Canada, fans finally began their journey through Pallett's conjured-up world of Spectrum, with help from the album's narrator Lewis; Heartland is a concept album narrated by a farmer named Lewis as he comes to terms with his creator. Note: it wasn't until I read the lyrics to Lewis Takes Off His Shirt that I realized Lewis' creator actually referred to Owen Pallett himself. Pallett's latest effort is easily his most accessible, and finest work to [...]
New Music Canada Track of the Day. Amanda Putz: "It says more about this country in a mere 3 minutes than a 3 hour throne speech ever could."
