Legendary punk bassist Mike Watt (of Minutemen and Firehouse fame) has joined forces with The Mars Volta frontman Cedric-Bixler Zavala to form a bona fide super group called Anywhere. Despite there being a Mars Volta record primed and ready for release in 2012, and Mike Watt serving as acting live bassist for Iggy Pop and the Stooges on their recently rescheduled tour , the pair found time to sit down and record a 73 entitled Pyramid Mirrors . Ready for the crazy part? Bixler-Zavala won't even be handling vocals. [...]

Well, well, well what do we have here, it's only the Omar Rodriquez Lopez Group playing live at Fitzgerald's in Houston during last SXSW madness in Texas. Cedric Bixler-Zavala also joined the band onstage only fuelling the rumours that the new Mars Volta album is complete and ready to give our ear drums a good seeing to. Adding with the announcement of The Mars Volta playing Sonisphere Festival this July I think that rumour is almost a definate. South By Southwest (SXSW) largely passed me by this year, especially compared to the 2010 edition, for which we had special guest blogging action from the heart of Austin. Catching up a little today, however, I thought I'd at least offer up some of the more choice reports and photo segments for any of you that were similarly isolated from the shenanigans. • DINOSAUR PILE-UP - MY ROCK AND ROLL

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the only musician who puts Robert Pollard to shame, is finally set to release a much-needed 'best of' compilation on April 19th. The compilation, entitled "Telesterion," culls from Omar's 25-plus solo albums (!), but understandably eschews his work with The Mars Volta (although many of Omar's tracks ultimately get transformed into Volta songs). One of the new tracks included on "Telesterion" is entitled "Casate Colmillo" and is slated for release on an upcoming album entitled "The Somnambulists." It features Spanish vocals, once a secret weapon of The Mars Volta that they have inexplicably forsaken, and Rodriguez-Lopez's [...]

The Midland theater's classical opera house art style was the perfect setting for the Mars Volta 's show. It was truly an appropriate stage for the masterful musicians.The dramatic architecture of the theater complimented the show's storybook-esque theme.
