"The idea behind Halfsies is that participating restaurant-goers are only served a dish that is half the size of the normal menu items, and that the remaining value in the dish is put to a better purpose. What restaurants don't put on the table, they donate as cash to groups working on food insecurity, homelessness, and hunger," writes Fast Company Exist . The company, started by four friends in Austin, Texas, is still trying to workout how the donations will work with restaurants. Spokesperson Linsey McNew says about 60% of proceeds will go to local charities, 30% [...]

Basically, you should've recovered from the toils of Christmas present purchases and bar tabs the size of three credit cards enough to have some cash left over to give to CHARITY. Luckily, Cult Cinema, Front magazine and even TH Editor, Raz are all making it easy for you to do so. Cult Cinema are teaming up [...]

It's good that - in the face of the sort of bad publicity even Mel Gibson couldn't generate - the Susan G Komen Foundation have reversed their original decision to punish Planned Parenthood for helping people in difficult situations. Amongst those who sounded their outrage at a cancer charity behaving like right-wing politicians were The Decemberists : The Decemberists are deeply troubled by Komen for the Cure's recent decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, a vital resource in the battle against breast cancer. Providing cancer screenings to low income women is integral to [...]

This weekend (yes, it starts tomorrow night, in case you haven't noticed!) sees a trio of charity gigs in memory of the late, great hip hop producer J-Dilla who passed away in 2006 at age 32 from lupus-related complications. The three events - happening in Manchester, Brighton and London this weekend - will raise money for the J-Dilla Foundation , founded to help fund inner-city music programs and provide scholarships to high-achieving music students, and Lupus UK , the only national registered charity in the UK supporting [...]
The first school Madonna planned to bring Kabbalah to Malawi didn't end well. In fact, it didn't start well, with £2.4million being somehow consumed without a single child being taught about magic water or magic string. Still, when life gives Madonna lemons, Madonna puts a biopic of a lemon farmer into planning, and so she's trying again. This time, though, she's giving some money to people who actually know what they're doing , BuildOn. Madonna seems to think of this as her charity building schools rather than just giving a charitable [...]

The diversity of the musicians and musical genres [...]
There is a serious point in the Evening Argus piece about going deaf at gigs , but there's also something a bit puzzling about it: A music fan has warned fellow rockers too many concerts could make them deaf like her. Sue Burgess said years of going to performances by the likes of Right Said Fred had contributed to the severe hearing problems she and husband Tony have both developed. Now, it's true that the Burgesses have seen Right Said Fred, but later on there's a bit more depth to their musical tastes: [...]

Cat Power and Manny Pacquiao have joined forces this holiday season for a good cause. The unseeming duo have lent their vocals and appearance to the video for "King Rides By" to benefit the Festival of Children organization and Aliforney Center this Christmas. You can download the track here . I hope that when Money May gets out of jail, he and "Pac-Man" can finally hash out a date next year to decide who's who in the ring.
Tweet Watch the new video for Cat Power 's song "King Rides By" below. A couple of weeks ago Chan Marshall, otherwise known to most common folk as Cat Power, announced via her Twitter account that on Christmas eve she'd be throwing down something special for us in the form of new music. It was later revealed that it would be a charity single and that she's working on a new album (double-win!). [...]
