A collective of producers led by Damon Albarn will visit the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to produce a new album for Oxfam . Travelling with Damon to Congo are Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (TEED), Dan The Automator, Jneiro Jarel, Richard Russell, Actress, Marc Antoine, Jo Gunton and Kwes. They hope to make an album in 7 days. Wracked by years of conflict, the DRC is home to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, and proceeds from the album will go to helping Oxfam's work, helping thousands of the DRC's poorest people. A bunch of bands covering The Runaways - a nice tribute to Joan Jett, and a way of raising funds for a cancer charity. Who could have a problem with that? When drummer Col McGregor's Edinburgh band Frantic Chant were booted off of a charity compilation album for Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow that had decided to become exclusively Glaswegian, he decided to take doing his bit into his own hands. Together with Dom Holt of newly formed Leith-based Youngteam Records, Col has put together a compilation album of twenty-one tracks from Edinburgh-based bands. It's great when you can take something as serious as cancer and turn it around into something positive, and that's EXACTLY what UK electro-pop band Fenech-Soler has done. After the money raised with last year's charity singles for Haiti, it's not surprising that the music industry had the same idea to help the relief efforts in Japan. But instead of a star-studded charity single, we're getting a whole charity album. "We are doing it only digitally because it is faster, and this will be a worldwide release," says a spokesperson from Universal Music. "The plan is to have it available later this week."
