Last week I returned to the present with only a few throwbacks to the 90s toward the end of the show. The split digital/vinyl show featured new tracks from Sleeping Bag, The Babies, Sweater Girls, Gospel Claws, Suturee and Thunder Power. We also featured a few favorites since the year 2000 with tracks by The Anniversary, Tvärvägen and The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir. I'm excited for the show coming together for this Friday. It'll be a bit more electronic with several favorites from 2012 including Social Studies, Pure Bathing Culture, Purity [...]

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 I sat at Toronto's Massey Hall in anticipation of what I knew would be an amazing show. With Massey Hall undoubtedly being my favourite venue for its wonderful acoustics, I expected the pairing to be magical. Although I had extremely high anticipations, those were nonetheless surpassed once Grizzly Bear came on stage and Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen, Chris Taylor and Christopher Bear began performing. After American-New Zealand band Unknown Mortal Orchestra opened , Grizzly Bear made their way on at 9:15 [...]

The week leading up to this week's radio show was spent taking it easy. It's almost the end of summer, and after several consecutive weekends of house projects that overlapped into weekday evenings, it was a needed break. The resulting playlist was a mix of randomly-pieced together new releases paired with some classic favorites such as Belle & Sebastian (circa 1996), The High Dials (2006) and old The Fresh & Onlys (2009). Favorites on the new side include a recently announced new 73-single on Suicide Squeeze by Gap Dream, the opening track [...]

Toni Basil was a 38-year-old singer/actress in Los Angeles in the early '80s when a local music scout counseled her to take one more shot at recording a hit for young pop music fans. Basil and her songwriters chose to take "Kitty", a song by UK sensation Racey , and re-imagine it into a bubbly tune about a boy — one whom she'd describe in a cheerleader-style chant as "so fine". The resulting song, "Mickey", became a worldwide smash and one of the signature pop hits of the decade. It almost didn't happen, Basil [...]
Filmed in the Boxcutter Barbershop in the basement of the Twisted Pepper, Gavin, the lead singer of We Are Losers, treats us to 'Salt Lips', above, and after the jump, 'Cheerleader'. The former appears on the band's latest release, a split single with Runaround Kids, which you can get here. [Read more]

If you didn't figure out how much we love Cheerleader before when we featured them in a Pairings Box . And if you didn't get the hint when we used them to soundtrack our Pairings Box video , then please let me express our undying love for Hartford, Connecticut duo Donovan Rex and Max Friday now. These gents seriously know how to pen the finest summer pop jams built with the shiniest melodies sunniest hooks you'll find on the Eastern seaboard. Throw on your boat shoes and tighten that wench, it's time to click play and [...]

Photography by Irene Sánchez Prieto St. Vincent 's Annie Clark may well be the biggest contradiction in indie music; extremely pale and thin, she kind of looks like a corpse. A beautiful, gorgeous, amazing corpse, but a corpse nonetheless. The contradiction comes when she picks up her guitar. How does someone so seemingly frail produce so much aggression? And how does that aggression come off, indistinctly as powerful and delicate? In her hour-long set at the Spotify stage on Friday, Annie, and her impeccably-dressed backing band gave a [...]
St. Vincent - Cheerleader [4AD Session] And then there was this.
In the second installment of this week's Later With Jools Holland , St. Vincent perform two rousing versions of "Strange Mercy" tracks "Cheerleader" and "Northern Lights" . If you didn't think you could swoon over Annie Clark anymore than you already do, wait until you see her lampooning around the stage in high heels and making theramins look like more fun than they actually are. Connect with St. Vincent - [...]

Ogle, ogle, ogle. Oy, oy, oy. This morning, Gordon runs a photo of Gerard Butler at a basketball match: GERARD Butler made no attempt to hide his admiration for the LA Lakers cheerleaders. In the photo, Butler is smiling, and looking forward; in the foreground there's a cheerleader. For comparison, there's a similar photo of David Beckham not looking in the direction of a cheerleader. The fact that both these are snaps and, for all we know, Butler might have been looking past the cheerleader to someone selling snowcones and smiling at those, while [...]
Orca Orca Holding On + Homes Make Live , the latest release from Jim Hewitt aka Orca Orca, is a fantastic second offering that I have had on heavy rotation since he sent it over. Make Live is much more refined than his Young Minds very early Death Cab sounding project (which I loved) and less conflicted than his first few Orca Orca singles. This release is just so smooth and has a serious Beach Fossils vibe going on. As Jimmy Morris pointed out to me yesterday, “Orca Orca is Craft [...]

I'm having trouble breathing just looking at this... One of the most interesting talents to appear on the scene in the past few years is St. Vincent, the nom de rock of Annie Clark, whose first album, the excellent Marry Me , came out in 2007. It was followed in 2009 by the equally good Actor , and then most recently, in September 2011, by the even more equally good (ha) Strange Mercy . That is to say, she now has three excellent albums to her credit, all worth checking out. She's like [...]
I began this playlist before moving and actually thought I'd posted it, things have been so hectic I'm not even surprised. Although a bit delayed... here's some great music to check out. . . . 1. The Record Company - "Dont Let Me Get Lonely" "Don't Let Me Get Lonely" has been on constantly since [...]

Honey, I blew up Annie Clark! St.Vincent has released a new video for “cheerleader”, where she is a curious giant. St. Vincent - “Cheerleader”
