After holding down their month-long February residency at The Echo in Los Angeles, Slang Chickens are going country (kind of) on a mini-tour of the South West culminating in two shows during SXSW in Austin, TX at BD Riley's on March 16th (with The Growlers) and the Pinpoint Music Party on March 17th. For a complete list of tour dates, click here . The Los Angeles quartet's sophomore EP My Floor is set for release this Spring via Psychedelic Judaism and Infrasonic Sound, but [...]

Lapsteel guitar infused country garage. My Floor , the new EP by Slang Chickens mixes Nineties indie cool with a West Coast sense of melody, singing about danger, drugs and guns. Jeffrey Lee Pierce of The Gun Club is one of their heroes and singer Evan Weiss comes close in projecting his lyrical aloofness. Drummer Dash Hutton is the band's MVP, laying down a beat that is halfway between the Pixies and The Beach Boys. Slang Chickens : Dash Hutton: drums Brandon [...]
SLANG CHICKENS, PAPA, AND THE LOVELY BAD THINGS ON MONDAY FEB. 28TH AT THE ECHO, 1822 WEST SUNSET BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES. 8:30PM/ FREE/ 21+

Country-tinted tunes have had quite the resurgence in popularity recently, whether it’s on the radio or playing in the local record store these days. And for the most part, folk-flavored genres have also grown more prominent within the SoCal area with the likes of the Belle Brigade, the Fling, the Romany Rye and more. Slang Chickens could just be another twangy band to add to the list, but the ambition Evan Weiss, Dash Hutton, Brandon Intelligator and Brandon Rauch possess as a collective reaches a little deeper, combining the home-style sounds of acoustic guitar, banjo and lap steel [...]

As Paloma will attest, I will drive into the hinterlands for fried chicken. And though I saw them on what seemed like every corner of Kuching while traveling in Borneo, visiting our nearest Kentucky Fried Chicken is a trip into the urban hinterlands - a twenty-minute drive to a dodgy part of town. About two or three times a year the lure will be too strong and I'll make the trek. It's also seared into my memory to hear The Drunken Frenchman quite drunkenly hoist a glass to toast, "Colonel Sanders - a [...]

My name is Geoff. When I am not droning here about my life, we do a bang-up podcast, which you can listen to by clicking on secret locations all over this website. I have such doubts. Not that I am a sissy, but I tend to overthink, overworry, and overconsider some things. Not useful things, like mortgage loans and how I treat other people, but silly things, like what is for dinner. Since being diagnoosed with Diabetes, I have been afraid to eat at other people's houses. How [...]

Pies n' Thighs was a tall tale in Brooklyn for quite sometime. From it's humble beginnings in the back of Rockstar Bar, and then the extended hiatus before it's reincarnation on S 4th Street. I never got to eat at that fabled first location, but that hasn't stopped me from frequenting their new spot. Pies n' Thighs does Southern food well (pretty much everything on the menu is killer), but now I can't get past the Chicken Biscuit. A friend chicken biscuit is a truly southern item. Very rarely do you see a chicken dish [...]

Anyone who knew me in my Cramps-obsessed high-school years can tell you that all of my insides were one huge soft spot, and that spot was soft for nasty, bass-less garage rock. By the time the Gories hit the scene, I was too busy with the Butthole Surfers and A Tribe Called Quest to notice, but fortunately the past doesn't go anywhere, so there's time for a man like me to catch up. The Gories put out some ridiculous-good records in the 1989-1993 region, and have reunited for a tour - they hit the Independent [...]

Somewhere in Tuscany, Italy a hen den was attacked by a fox and eat all the egg-laying females. So, a cock decided to do a Sonique and go all transsexual to bear and rear chicks. It was a male and it sang "I'm That Chick" and now it's laying eggs. Of course scientists are baffled but many animals do that and some fish too. Including the human animal, but that requires a trip to Thailand. Anyway, read on . Filed under: Animalia , Eurobeat , Queen Of The Night Tagged: chick , [...]

For the third straight year, Sean Gray and Christopher Berry, who make up Fan Death Records , have curated their own festival, DNA Test Fest . And with the rise of both the label and the bands that surround it growing sharply each year, the third installment of Test Fest was head and shoulders the largest undertaking yet. Beyond the two-stage, 17-band, main event, the duo added an equally large pre-party to the fest that became its unspoken first night. Hosted by one of Baltimore’s more amazing DIY spaces, Ruintown , (the kind of [...]

Keep Your Eyes (and Ears) Open. Never know what you'll see. Spotted this chicken-filled stoop while cruisin' around Petaluma . Coincidentally, just a block away from the ol' Must-Hatch Incubator Co. building. Did you know the egg incubator was invented here? It's one of the reasons we were known as The World's Egg Basket . (And you thought we only invented the world sport of Wrist-Wrestling ). "G ot chickens in the houses. We got chickens in the trees. Chickens in the pots of all the Petalumees [...]
