Cloud Boat – “Youthern”

Cloud Boat – “Youthern” Hot out of London is this lovely new group, Cloud Boat . Their first song, "Youthern" features an awesome choral intro. You have to be in the right mood for it, but if you are... it's pretty great. I look forward to hearing Cloud Boat's album when it comes out on May 28th.

U.S. Army Band Ensembles

U.S. Army Band Ensembles The United States Army Band has been the premier musical organization of the U.S. Army since 1922 when Army Chief of Staff General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing directed that it be formed to emulate the premier European military bands he had heard during the First World War. The Band has been known as “Pershing’s Own” ever since. The Band provides musical support for US leadership, including all branches of government and for a spectrum of national and international events in support of public diplomacy, community and international relations, recruiting [...]

Let's All Sing--Acorn Chorale, Directed by John Johnson

Let's All Sing--Acorn Chorale, Directed by John Johnson This turned up at (where else?) Goodwill--it's been in my collection barely a week. If, as you gaze at the cover, you find yourself saying, "There's that lady again," you're right--she shows up on at least a couple of other Acorn/Hudson/Royale/whatever LPs, though I imagine she only got paid once. Not fair. Not fair at all. I went to the usual source to find an Acorn discography, and it was there, all right: Acorn Discography . A subsidiary of Rondo, with even crappier packaging. Thanks to leads from the piece, I found [...]

Santiman's sentiments slightly off

NOW this may sound stupid, but in these days of misleading band names such as Egyptian Hip-Hop, Retribution Gospel Choir and Manchester Orchestra, I was genuinely surprised on hearing them that The Creole Choir of Cuba was actually a choir. But Santiman's opener Preludio blasts away that notion - this is choral work. There is a strong Caribbean influence, an answer to Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo, but this is not the Buena Vista Social Club-style vibe I had expected. Now there are upbeat tracks here, but the overall effect of the LP is weighed down by the [...]

Roomful of Teeth- Self-Titled

Roomful of Teeth- Self-Titled ALBUM REVIEW
Roomful of Teeth is an intriguingly strange choral group whose debut, self-titled album adventurously expands what it means to make music in this genre. WATCH THE REVIEW

Stream the New Roomful of Teeth Album

Roomful of Teeth by Roomful of Teeth Roomful of Teeth is an experimental choral group founded and directed by Brad Wells a few years ago. Their music makes use of an array of singing techniques. Not only does the group have a strong set of beautiful singing voices, but they're not afraid to segue into stints of throat singing, screams, or loud gasps. This new, self-titled album of theirs was created via a series of guest composers. Among them is actually Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs. Her contribution can be heard on the extremely chilling [...]

Julianna Barwick — Never Change

Christmas 2011

Christmas 2011 Merry Christmas! We wouldn't dream of posting today without presents, so voila!  A playlist and two wonderful tracks for this festive day. The first comes to you from the northern European Yuletide tradition, courtesy of the King's Singers, with their heart-melting performance of "Wexford Carol." The carol, a traditional Irish hymn originating from County Wexford, is also known by its Gaelic name, " Carúl Loch Garman." It has been performed for hundreds of years, and is considered to be one of the oldest Christmas carols with a melody outside the Roman Catholic tradition. Due to Britain's rule over Ireland, it [...]

Portugal. The Man – In The Mountain, In The Cloud

Portugal. The Man – In The Mountain, In The Cloud Portugal. The Man's been around for sometime and I didn't know a goddamn thing about them till I heard last year's American Ghetto . To say I was impressed with the band's funky, rock-the-fuck-out sensibility - which is admittedly very Flaming Lips-esque at times - would shortchange them. "1000 Years" and "All My People" from the album have stuck with me as intense instances of guitar and groovy synth. Last year's album also occasionally featured choral elements, which was unexpected, peculiar, and ultimately fun; it's not a new approach of theirs, but it definitely worked best on American [...]

Mountains – Air Museum

Mountains – Air Museum American ambient duo Mountains have just released their latest LP entitled Air Museum via Chicago-based Thrill Jockey recordings.  While Air Museum boasts carefully crafted textures that Mountains have become known for, the overall sound of the record is noticeably more electronic than previously recorded material.  Their 2009 effort entitled Choral , made heavy use of guitar and other more organic instruments.  The guitars have in effect been replaced with fatter sounding synthesizers and more MIDI mapped timing patterns.  Mountains continue to release euphoric and introspective music and Air [...]

TVD Live: Adam Arcuragi & The Lupine Chorale Society at IOTA, 4/19

TVD Live: Adam Arcuragi & The Lupine Chorale Society at IOTA, 4/19 You can listen to Adam Arcuragi , a North meets South folk singer, any and everywhere: NPR , La Blogotheque , and on his current tour heading back to the Midwest on Tuesday. At IOTA , Arcuragi stomps his feet, flips his long hair, and screams (in perfect pitch) to the ceiling. Reminds me of a possessed Dave Matthews at his best. The ache in Arcuragi's voice brings me way down with the chorus of "Broken Throat," "Oh [...]

[Moving Mondays] Public School 22

PS22 Chorus "KIDS" by MGMT
The fifth grade choir at Public School 22 . I was only shown this last week but they performed at this year's Oscars so they must be pretty big by now. For those of you, like me, who hadn't heard of them, PS22 cover pop songs in an effort to promote the value of teaching the arts in schools. Here's their cover of MGMT's break through hit 'Kids'. And their latest recording with Little [...]

Julianna Barwick – The Magic Place

Julianna Barwick – The Magic Place Fans of the likes of Grouper and Stars Of The Lid will find plenty to love in Julianna Barwick . The Louisiana native has just released her second album The Magic Place through Asthmatic Kitty and it is defined by looping drop-out rhythms, surging bass and choral tones. It all starts with her voice. Rather than coming across like calculated to-the-letter music, Barwick prefers to let the loop station be her guide (no words were harmed during this recording). Her music is rich with undulating rhythms that occasionally stop [...]

Music Review: Nico Muhly - A Good Understanding and I Drink the Air Before Me

A pair of new discs from Nico Muhly showcase the young composer's continued exploration of contemporary classical voices.

Creep, Scala (2003)

Noise Popped! Friday 2/26:John Vanderslice / Nurses / Honeycomb / Conspiracy of Venus @ Swedish American Hall,Spencey Dude & The Doodles / Weekend @ Bender’s

Noise Popped! Friday 2/26:John Vanderslice / Nurses / Honeycomb / Conspiracy of Venus @ Swedish American Hall,Spencey Dude & The Doodles / Weekend @ Bender’s Phew, holy crow. You can have one of those " this is why I go out to shows" nights any time of the year, but to have three nights like that in a row, you probably need an assist from a festival. Noise Pop packed the weekend with great music and made it hard not to have a special night. I'm going to attempt to wrap up some of the weekend's shows over the next few posts, then get to highlighting some of the most memorable songs. Spencey Dude & The [...]
