It's that time again, friends, time to gather around the table and share our thoughts on certain special albums. The subject this time is Sharon Van Etten -the woman, the myth, the legend. Alright, there's nothing really mythical about her but she is a legendary woman, and her newest album, Tramp , is released and ready for listening and debate. We have all eight of our writers contributing their thoughts here. Dig in, explore our opinions, and share your own in the comments! Sharon Van Etten / Serpents [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris I commit to "pop" because it's more fun to say than "soda". Look, soda is flavorless ephemera that has to be mixed with gin to work as a beverage at all [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Photo by Michael Wells Words by Chris There's a lot of Raptures these days. Tuesday we're gonna die, Thursday we're gonna die. The good news is that it's all bullshit and nothing really matters! Come along this long road of long songs to the End of Days… [...]

It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. They don't really mean a whole lot and you can love 'em or leave 'em, but it seems like the right thing to do to sum up the year in preparation of the next. This year we're featuring personal lists from all of our fantastic writers. [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris A great cover in my opinion is one that alters the meaning of the song via the covering-band's performance. A really great cover is one that takes the place of the original in your mind. There are more than 5 examples of this for sure. Below [...]
I might have been insane to go to a show the day before a final, but honestly, I don't regret it one bit. Girls played an incredible show at the Music Box this past Tuesday, December 6th and I left the show happier than I was this entire finals week. We had a bit of trouble [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris The king of the garage bands. It's almost like they're too drunk to realize they might be the greatest songwriters of the last 25 years. Oh, wait. [...]
I've never been in love during October...

Toro Y Moi's new EP, Freaking Out [Carpark Records], is by far the most up-tempo work that Chaz Bundick has put out under the Toro Y Moi name. Chaz continues to take new stylistic risks and this time he's back with electronic offering. This jump back to the synthetic lands with varying levels of success. There are truly brilliant moments interspersed throughout the EP that make it more than worthwhile to pick up. If Underneath the Pine hadn't driven home the point that Toro Y Moi is a multifaceted musical force worth reckoning with, this EP [...]

Great Scott. No... It's Chris Scott , but nonetheless still great. His twitter account will tell you that he's a business school learner, music absorber and steak pie digester. While his soundcloud profile will display his talents as a music producer with his rim clicks in all the right places. (I stole that last line from the comment section on said profile, and will likely use it again. In fact, it's my original line now.) The track Coast falls in line meeting all of my requirements: a well programmed beat that's relaxed and [...]
Synth Britannia is an essential 2009 documentary about the rise - and rise of synth-based music in the UK. It's an insightful film containing interviews with the hot and heavies of the early synth era. The stories of Wolfgang Flür of Kraftwerk, Philip Oakey of The Human League and Andy McClusky of OMD (and a [...]

I (Chris) have got a bone to pick. I read an email today asking me if I was sick of lo-fi surf rock bands as an introduction to some band I've never heard of and one that I am unlikely to hear ever again. Let's say... I wasn't enchanted, partially because genre bashing is a bad way to promote a band. It was a loaded question, but I'll answer it anyways: No. I still love surf rock and am yet to burn out on it despite excessive listening. I had a girlfriend in high school who hooked [...]

The Focussed Distraction's The Gravity EP [Blanket Room Records] amazes me because its first three tracks are both danceable yet confidently laid back. The songs rely on rhythmic swagger rather than face-slapping sonic intensity to create smart and succinct dance jams. The Focussed Distraction is a one-man project created by Jon McLeod and, dare I say, the dude knows how to create a fresh beat. McLeod gives his songs a versatility of being suited for either a loud gathering or a sit down at the computer over a coffee in that his tracks can be taken at bass [...]

[ Honest Jon's Records ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy CD ) ( buy mp3s ) Though the spotlight has been on the Moritz von Oswald Trio in which he performs, Sasu Ripatti formed his own experimental jazz quartet a few years ago. Having spent most of their time together gigging, the group has just recorded their debut album at what seems like the perfect time. By all accounts Ripatti's drumming is one of the most impressive aspects of Moritz von Oswald's acclaimed trio, and his own musical history begins [...]

Bon Iver 's new, doubly self-titled and highly-anticipated album came out today, but thanks to the magic of the internet (way to go, iTunes leak) we've already got fully-formed opinions. Music is all about personal opinion and reaction, and we each have our own perspective on every little song that passes our ears, but this album seemed special and noteworthy and warranted a group discussion of sorts. These are honest opinions from Blake, Brendan, Jim, and the rest of the contributing writers. Be forewarned, it could get a little dicey in here. [...]
