I still haven't done the thing I talked about doing last week , opening this column up to late-night peformances or fan-taped camera-phone concert vids. I might still eventually do that, but this turned out to be a very good week for the traditional notions of music videos, and the best one in a while for big-budget major-label videos. As a fan of all the late-'90s/early-'00s videos where labels shipped rappers down to Caribbean nations and blew big money on their clips, I'm happy to include two such videos on the below list - and both of them are [...]
As a rapper, A$AP Rocky's greatest gift is for creating a sticky bad-dream sort of atmosphere. And on Long.Live.A$AP , his debut album, only one song rips right through that carefully cultivated vibe: "Wild For The Night," a blaring dance-rap banger produced by bro-step titan Skrillex. Rocky and the veteran rap video director (and auteur of the underrated T.I. vehicle ATL ) Chris Robinson have now teamed up to make the video, shooting it in the Dominican Republic. It's a delirious throwback to the days when record labels would happily blow seven figures on [...]
Dealing with bankruptcy and the pains of cancer, legendary drummer Levon Helm found renewed vigor in his Midnight Rambles. In the barn on his family farm in Woodstock, The Levon Helm Band and some of the finest musicians around would put on concerts in the communal spirit of old traveling medicine shows. As one of his final projects before his passing, Helm selected recordings from these events from between 2005 and 2010, and now the collection, The Levon Helm Band – The Midnight Ramble Sessions Volume 3 , is due out November 20th from Vanguard Records. [...]
This was our first year at Summer Camp, and there were a bunch of bands I was excited to see. So my expectations were high. I got to see most of the bands on my list, and all that I did see were as good or better than I was expecting. But, Christ... the heat? Almost unbearable. It practically drained the life from me. But, once again, I was saved by rock n roll... plus some new strategies for staying cool when you're spending entire days out in unshaded, 90+ degree heat. Here are some of the bands and artists that [...]

With all the planned celebrations surrounding Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday this year, it's no surprise that Billy Bragg would be throwing his hat into the ring to honor the iconic and influential singer-songwriter. The U.K.- based folkie has direct ties to Guthrie, teaming up with Wilco back in 1997, to put music to a collection of unrecorded Guthrie songs. The two acts recorded nearly 50 songs, which have been packaged together as the Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions , which will hit stores next Tuesday. Bragg will honor Guthrie's legacy with his [...]
Neal Casal is a musician who you discover when you start digging into his career, has a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon-esque connection to other musicians. The fact is that Casal's personal mantra is to live a life of creativity, and he achieves this in spades through his own extensive solo career with 11 albums dating back to 1994, sideman work in countless recording sessions and stints in other bands including high-profile runs in Ryan Adams ' Cardinals and currently Chris Robinson's Brotherhood (which has an [...]

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
Last week, we skipped this list so that we could run our list of the 25 best videos of the year thus far . So I'll just take a moment to point out that last week's list, if we'd done it, definitely would've included SoKo's " We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow and" Blood Orange's " I'm Sorry We Lied ." Those videos rule. And here are this week's picks. Read More...

[Video] Nas: “Daughters”
You almost knew this was going to get the visual treatment. There were many questions about "Daughters" during the release of the audio, now let's see what chatter the video will bring. Nas's LP Life is Good is due July 17th. Is it Nas's summer? Hit the jump for the "Daughters" video directed by Chris Robinson.
Video: Nas – Daughters
My favorite rapper, Nas, hooks up with my favorite music director, Chris Robinson , to create this dope visual for his latest single, " Daughters ." Dope concept on this one and I like how Destiny's cameo wasn't forced. Although Nasir's baby's mom was " disappointed " in him for penning a song about their daughter's most recent public troubles, I'm digging the song and think the video came out perfect. Only thing that could make this record any better is if Nas did a remix featuring Jay-Z and Eminem. How dope would that be? Nas' 10th [...]
Record Store Day Recap (only a month late)
As I jump back into the world of blogging (I promise, baby, this week I'll be different), I figure I need to address the biggest music event of the past few weeks...Record Store Day. I've been going every year and when I used to get to the store about 30-minutes prior to opening, I was upset that I was 5th or 6th in line. But every year the line has been getting longer, forcing me to get

Video: Chris Robinson Brotherhood w/ Phil Lesh
Following a few clue-filled tweets , we had a feeling that last night's Chris Robinson Brotherhood show at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco would be special and we were right. For the group's second set, Grateful Dead / Furthur bassist Phil Lesh emerged for a closing stanza filled with mostly Dead and Dead-related tunes. Robinson has a long history with Lesh as the Black Crowes opened for the Dead in 1995 and then Chris went to become one of Phil's "Friends." CRB's bassist Mark "Duddy" Dutton sat out while Lesh [...]
