Dark Romance – The Jezabels Interview.

Dark Romance – The Jezabels Interview. "Endless Summer" By The Jezabels. "Disco Biscuit Love" By The Jezabels. Australian quartet The Jezabels are a band who readily admit they " love a bit of drama" and you half suspect that they could transform something as mundane as strolling to procure the Sunday morning newspaper into a soaring epic, angst ridden song about heartache, lost love, separation and redemption. We've previously described them as a band on the cusp of greatness in a panel piece for [...]

Dum Dum Girls Interview And Only In Dreams Review. " Bedroom Eyes" By Dum Dum Girls. ************************ For somebody brought up in a house filled with the music of Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Phil Spector , the Brill Building sound, The Ronettes and The Supremes, and who then went on to discover Blondie, The Ramones , Lush, The Jesus And Mary Chain and The Raveonettes, Dum Dum Girls are a veritable gift from the musical gods! Their debut album " I Will Be " [...]

Happy 60th Birthday, Chrissie Hynde

Happy 60th Birthday, Chrissie Hynde Photo by G. Chrissie Hynde Rock and Roll goddess Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders is 60 today. I saw her perform last year with her latest band JP Chrissie and the Boys. She looks great and when you hear her voice in person, you can't help but melt a little bit. A lot of people are turned off by her politics, but I've learned to separate the person from the music – and I recommend you do too. You'll be disappointed less. Also born [...]

Anna Calvi "Blackout"

This song first caught my attention because I thought it was Chrissie Hynde, and as a lifelong Pretender's fan, I don't say that lightly. Calvi's flippantly cool, I-won't-wallow-in-my-pain, track is reminiscent of one of my favorite Pretender's songs, "Don't Get Me Wrong." Brian Eno referred to her as "the best thing since Patti Smith." Comparison's aside, the music is still fresh, new and interesting.

Festival Frolics: Hopping Down In Kent, You'll Wish You Went.

Festival Frolics: Hopping Down In Kent, You'll Wish You Went. If last year's Hop Farm demonstrated that you could revel wholeheartedly in contemporary folk without so much as a mention of Mumford & Sons contrivance , this year's bash looks to the past to conjure a future that is, at this point in time, one of the most enticing line ups of the coming summer. Headliners already include what reads like the walled placards of the Hard Rock Café's most revered branch: from Morrissey to Iggy, Lou to Patti and Bryan Ferry, the Main Stage boasts an astounding weekend's worth. New additions to the line up however, similarly, [...]

JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys:: "Christmas Soon"

Christmas Soon - JP, Chrissie & THe Fairground Boys
"I wrote Christmas Soon in the attic of my Mum's house in Wales on a rainy day when nothing seemed to be going right. Writing the song was just a way of letting off steam and thinking "Hey! It'll be christmas soon" so dont worry about it. When Chrissie, The Fairground Boys and myself were in the studio recording Fidelity, Chrissie heard the demo I had made and said "We have to record that track right now!". Its such a simple song, so we went in the live room, played it four times and chose the best take and hey [...]

New Song + Video : JP, Chrissie and The Fairground Boys : Christmas Soon

New Song + Video : JP, Chrissie and The Fairground Boys : Christmas Soon If the post-Turkey Day onslaught of holiday tunes has taught me anything, it's that there are very few of these songs that I can stomach. Additionally, my tolerance is typically inversely-related to the frequency with which I hear any particular song. Subsequently, Charo's disco take on ¿Dónde Está Santa Claus? is a smiler, while any rendition of Jingle Bells is more or less an invitation for me to take hostages. One (vaguely) holiday song I doubt I will ever tire of is 2000 Miles by The Pretenders. Why? Well, for starters it's [...]

Video: JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys, 'If You Let Me'

For those of us who for decades could never get enough of Chrissie Hynde's voice, there is her new collaboration with Welsh singer-songwriter JP Jones, JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys . They've made a pretty good album, "Fidelity!," and they've made made an even better backstory — a 59-year-old rock legend and a 31-year-old folkie finding a special chemistry. Above is Chris Marrs Piliero's video for "If You Love Me," which was inspired by vampire movie "Let the Right One In." IFC's Brandom Kim had a cool interview with the duo when the video premiered. Also [...]

Tonight in L.A.: UNKLE, JP, Boom Boom Satellites, JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys, Wet & Reckless

Cheers.] Tonight's top 3 visitors from foreign lands: ☛ UNKLE (new album "Where Did the Night Fall" and new EP "The Answer") makes its first visit to L.A. in more than three years at the El Rey Theatre. That's Paul Andrew Williams' short film "Savious and Angels," above, which features the UNKLE songs "Caged Bird," "The Runaway" and "Another Night Out." You can trade [...]

I want my MFNW: Part 1

I want my MFNW: Part 1 I'm walking up Broadway to the Hotel Lucia, where my MFNW wristband (or bracelet, if you want to get all girly about it) awaits. This thin, white plastic band will handcuff me to MFNW all weekend, guaranteeing that I will drink copious amounts of beer, eat Taco Bell at least twice, get very little sleep, and essentially make all kinds of bad decisions. Oh yeah, I'll see some music, too. As I approach the hotel's entrance I see a woman and two men walking the opposite direction. I freeze, mouth agape. "I think that was Chrissie Hynde," [...]

JP, Chrissie and the Fairground Boys

JP, Chrissie and the Fairground Boys You have to respect guys like J.P. Jones. A few years ago, he sidled up to Chrissie Hynde at a party and the next thing you know, they're bonding over a mutual love of fairgrounds. Not long after, they found themselves co-writing Fidelity! , a song cycle about a romance between a younger man and an older woman (much like the duo, who have 30 years age difference between them). Read more here and get it here .

[Win This!] JP, Chrissie and The Fairground Boys : Fidelity! Giveaway

[Win This!] JP, Chrissie and The Fairground Boys : Fidelity! Giveaway A few weeks back I was blathering on about JP, Chrissie and The Fairground Boys , the new project from The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde and her new boy toy, Welsh singer-songwriter JP Jones . Their debut record, the appropriately-named Fidelity! , is available now, and it's a doozy. This is Hynde's first time out of the garage without the Pretenders, and stylistically it falls nicely between the snarling pub rock of that band's first two records, and the woolgathering [...]

Linda Perry Wonders Where the Hard-Rocking Women Are

Linda Perry Wonders Where the Hard-Rocking Women Are Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive When Courtney Love was working with Linda Perry on the album that would eventually become 'Nobody's Daughter' -- though not the version produced by Perry -- the Hole singer wanted to put an all-female band together. As someone who's worked with a who's who of female artists including Pink , Christina Aguilera and KT Tunstall , Perry is the first to support woman rockers, [...]

Potent Quotables: Hynde Exorcises Emotion

Potent Quotables: Hynde Exorcises Emotion Filed under: Potent Quotables Fred Duval, FilmMagic "I'm too old to be [his] wife and give him children, and that's basically what he wants." -- Chrissie Hynde In an interview with Spin Magazine, the 'Don't Get Me Wrong' singer addressed her curious relationship with new bandmate JP Chase. Apparently writing songs together for her post- Pretenders project JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys was a way of "getting it out of their [...]

CoS vs. Grant Park III: Round Two at Lollapalooza '10

CoS vs. Grant Park III: Round Two at Lollapalooza '10 Lollapalooza 2010. You wake up. Every muscle in your body hurts, even the ones you didn't know existed. The excitement of day one has all been replaced with a feeling of sheer exhaustion. "Ugh... two more days of this," you think as you contemplate the best method of getting your legs working again. Your mind then quickly focuses on which bands can be skipped in favor of an extra hour of sleep. But then you get up. A cool shower washes off all the stale sweat you chose not to get off the night before. [...]
