by teepoo Avante-garde artist Clara Engel recently released an EP called The Lovebird's Throat . This one is pretty dark, her voice filling most of the sound since the instruments are very minimalistic. Lovebirds by Clara Engel Bandcamp
The latest EP from Canadian songstress Clara Engel gets the brain working before a note is played. 'The Lovebird's Throat'? Lovebirds: romantic, cosy, cute, happy. Throat: a far less romantic word, one associated with strangulation, choking, slitting. That's not just us being vulgar, surely if the title was meant to be all sunshine and sweetness the much more affectionate word 'neck' would have been used? So you already begin to realise this is an album about contrasts, about the dark and the light, about love gone wrong. Look at the cover; is it a fantastical glowing creature carefully [...]

Clara Engle - The Lovebird's Throat Toronto-based singer-songwriter Clara Engel released her EP, The Lovebird's Throat , earlier this week. From the album, listen to the raw, and haunting track "Song of the Sea Witch" in this post. The Lovebird's Throat by Clara Engel The EP was recorded earlier this year. She is currently working on her second full-length album, which she hopes to release in 2013.
If we discount classical music and music that's designed to be enjoyed in, shall we say, an altered state of mind, then you'll find there's a reason why most songs that fall underneath the colossal umbrella of 'popular music' are between two and four minutes in length. To string a song out past the six or seven minute mark without it becoming boring, it either has to be made of different, changing segments, slowly build so that as it gets better you don't notice the time passing, be a hypnotic psych/drone mammoth, or, simply, be bloody amazing. Unfortunately just being [...]

“Clara Engel’s voice comes to me from that deepest of all places, imaginative space, from which she visually retrieves an inner landscape converted by breath into the rock equivalent of poetry. Rarely has a voice sounded so authoritative, so unapologetic in its disclosures, so sure of its direction in going home into song,” -- British poet Jeremy Reed Read more »

Clara Engel is an experimental, post-punk artist from Montreal who puts together songs full of textures and atmosphere. Songs like "Lick My Fins" (below) are challenging, evoking as they do anything from cabaret punk to Siouxsie and the Banshees... even hints of Annie Lennox and Patti Smith. It's a challenging, but ultimately rewarding, listen to an artist that is clearly driven by an inner poetry that burns from the inside-out. The great testament to the highly original nature of Clara's music is my complete inability to find any sort of description that feels appropriate. One of her many [...]

by teepoo Now that I got all this hosting stuff figured out, back to my regular posting. I feel like I haven't posted anything Canadian in a little bit. I don't remember how I first came across Clara Engel. At first, I thought she was friggin weird. Her avante-garde blues and psychadelic fusion isn't for you if you are close-minded. In midst of strangeness like in Lick My Fins you still have elements of a great song, a hook, and a simple but hypnotic rhythmic groove. [...]

Clara Engel this total babe who lives in Toronto. I've been watching her via myspace for awhile now and I must admit - I have remained pretty smitten, but I've been trying to keep her as a secret because her songs are really intimate and my smitten-ness is very near the borderline of becoming a serious crush. Her songs range from gritty, dirty, despair-filled love ballads (complete with necessary and melodramatic brooding) to straight up depictions of S & M fantasties. She is awesome and inspirational, mostly due to her refusal to conform to Canadian standards. [...]
