Hubert Blanc Francard and Philippe Zdar achieved huge commercial success with Cassius but it was their La Funk Mob project in the early '90s that really floated the Phuturelabs boat. In particular the brilliant "Tribulations Extra Sensorielles" on Mo' Wax in 1994. La Funk Mob - Ravers Suck Our Sound The six tracker gathers up material from their Mo' Wax and Lovesupreme 123s into one handy place and captures the mid to early 90s trip hop era perfectly. Packed [...]

Every Saturday we take a look at some quality funk, soul and disco here at the Labs. Wether it be old or new, we're digging it and feel the need to share. Known as the Queen of Rock & Roll, Tina Turner has a career spanning over 50 years in the business. Her back catalogue is a vast array of solo work, rock anthems, duets and her raw earlier material with husband Ike. She is also partial to an amazing cover or two. While she became a massive success in the 80s and 90s, [...]
Despite later going on to become cheesemaster extraordinaire, DJ Seduction's first outing on vinyl was a quality bleepfest for C.T. Records in 1991 . Taking it's lead from LFO , the track combines a slightly altered version of the Warp classic's lead line with swirly synth pads, rave stabs, vocal snippets and a simple but effective break. Classic stuff. DJ Seduction - Bleep Bleep Mash Mash Thanks to Blog To The Old Skool for the audio.

Two organ pieces by English composers of different eras. If you like the sound of a eighteenth-century English organ untainted by German influence, this will be your sort of thing. Gramophone , again, is quite helpful here: Noel Mander's sympathetic restoration ten years ago in no way changed its tonal qualities, and it remains an instrument of great historic interest and beauty. The trumpet is quite as good as any continental reeds of the [...]
Proof of music's ability to cross cultural and linguistic boundaries - a work of great skill and depth.
Howard Shore wrote one of thee film scores of recent times with his music for Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings trilogy. It now seems that a heroic nerd, with classically trained musical talent, has taken a firm hold of the Shire with her boundy movements. Virtuoso violinist Lindsey Stirling, of ' Legends of Zelda' fame, has just slammed out another devoted fan video, this time taking on a different cult franchise: The Lord of The Rings. Immediately it's clear everything is in keeping with Peter Jackson's vision, physically popping over [...]

Every Saturday we take a look at some quality funk, soul and disco here at the Labs. Wether it be old or new, we're digging it and feel the need to share. This week it's Minnie Riperton with the brilliant "Adventures in Paradise" . Known to most for her 1975 single "Lovin You" , she was one of the decades finest vocalists and for me, this is maybe her finest moment - the title track from album "Adventures in Paradise". Minnie Riperton - Adventures in Paradise [...]

You gotta love this Dimitri From Sofia ! He's not from Paris, but he could be. He has been pumping me with awesome mixes and finally i have some time to blog two of them. The first mix is smooth and really perfect for sunsets with the right person next to you.... you know what i mean! I have also asked him to upload another mix he did, which is a tribute to James Bond. I think it's so creative and fancy that i had to share. Enjoy...! Tracklisting [...]

R&S was originally founded way back in 1984 and continues to this day to release exciting new electronica. While their back catalogue is absolutely packed with anthems, Radio Scorpio invited label founder Renaat Vandepapeliere to put together a mix of his favourites from the label's '90s output. Fire it up below and take in the classics, and there's a cheeky wee exclusive play of the new Model 500 as well. Tracklist 1) Derrick May The Beginning [...]

French based house duo Alan Braxe & Fred Falke brought a sense of relaxed euphoria with their 2000 club hit "Intro". Sampling "Crush On You" by The Jets, the funk bass line that underpins the whole track has an infectious groove and the vocal is one that always brings a big smile to the face. Feels like summer already!

So, I think most of us can agree, Mac Miller's Blue Slide Park was a little underwhelming, especially because he genereated more buzz then any rapper on their own ever. Well we get some fresh new Mac Miller, teaming up with Cam'ron, and Big Jerm on the beat. It's got a laid back hip hop feel with a classic vibe. Big Jerm kills it with the production of the beat, with a retro sample vibe. Both Cam and Mac throw down some solild smooth flows. Chill, enjoy! Mac Miller - Dig That (Ft. Cam'ron)(Prod. by Big Jerm) [...]
We're feeling a little bit Madonna over at MUZU.TV HQ, mainly because all thoughts are on the Superbowl this weekend and the Queen of pop is performing, but let's face it, when isn't an appropriate time to listen to Madonna? We've compiled a list of some of her greats, and there are a lot of them, surpassing many a genre and time period. From the 80s madness that is Material Girl, to the chilled out folk pop of American Pie. What's your favourite? Madonna - Material Girl [...]
Birth of a Star from Tom Lowe on Vimeo . "This movie presents a visualization of the star-forming region known as S106. This unique three-dimensional view illustrates and emphasizes that many of the objects contained within astronomical images are not at the same distance, but, in fact, spread across light-years of space. The Hubble image is augmented with additional field-of-view from the Subaru Infrared Telescope. The stars and the lobes of glowing gas from the Hubble/Subaru two-dimensional image have been separated and sculpted using both scientific knowledge and artistic license to create [...]

After Trane, Pharoah Sanders was the tenor saxophonist who most startled me, made me rethink the sound of the saxophone and re-appreciate what could be done with the horn. Trane, of course, was the brightest light in the constellation of sounds I knew as jazz. There were many others whom I liked but none of them were a North Star, a guide to what was possible, to where we could go when we were free to go wherever we wanted to go, wherever we were capable of going; or, as we said critiquing our own limitations: we can do anything [...]
Peter Broderick – "It's a Storm When I Sleep" Glimmer , a split album by Mr. Broderick and Japanese artist Takumi Uesaka, was released last year on Cote Labo . They state this album's concept is "to make the song for a quiet midnight", and the track above is what I think of as the best representation of what they strived to achieve here, and in most cases did brilliantly. This is a beautiful, beautiful song. Give it a listen and take a [...]

Although their time as a group lasted just under 4 years, British funk group Cymande as had an big influence on music as their tunes have been sampled by some of the hip hop greats. Formed in 1970 the multi instrumentalist group released 4 albums and shared the stage with great such as Al Green and appeared on the famous US show Soul Train. With tunes such as "Bra" and "The Message" now being regularly played by DJ's, I've picked my favourite "Brothers On the Slide" for bring the smooth Saturday funk.

Bjork's 1993 "Debut" album was a lovely piece of left of centre pop music and the tracks fell into the hands of some of the best producers in electronic music for remix work. While these mostly popped up on the vinyl releases of the singles, One Little Indian kindly put out a CD compilation entitled "The Best Mixes From The Album Debut For All The People Who Don't Buy White Labels" . While the pack included reworkings from The Black Dog and The Sabres of Paradise [...]
