AOL Radio Relaunches, Powered By Slacker

The digital radio race in the U.S. continues to intensify at a mind boggling pace. There were a few major developments last week, the first being Buick's announcement that Pandora will be a standard feature in all models starting next year. This is an extraordinary vote of confidence and if they see success here, ...

Just Try Not to Listen

The level of commerce that is associated with rock and roll is something that is best not thought about. It's sort of like the old line that you never want to go into the kitchen of a restaurant—regardless of whether it has three Michelin stars or it is a McDonald's—because you're likely not to have much of an appetite as a result of what you'll discover. So it is best that we enjoy the filet—or the Filet o' Fish—without much consideration beyond the object itself. It is best that we enjoy the work of our performers [...]

A Look At Clear Channel's Post 9/11 Banned Songs List

This week has already seen a bevy of tributes/stories/thinkpieces about what it means that 9/11 happened 10 years ago. I'm not here to do that: Instead, Daily Swarm has hipped us to the fact that in the days after 9/11, Clear Channel had a list of banned songs sent to all of its stations, mainly to keep us from thinking about how AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" relates to buildings being hit by terrorists. The full list of songs is at Wikipedia , and the most important thing to remember is that 3 Doors Down should [...]

The Echo Nest To Help Power Clear Channel's Pandora-like iHeartRadio

In what may be the music intelligence platform biggest deal to date, The Echo Nest today announced an agreement with Clear Channel Radio to help power their iHeartRadio digital music platform. Some in the industry believe that iHeartRadio - which allows listeners to build custom radio stations - is the biggest threat yet to slow or even reverse Pandora's meteoric rise. The Echo Nest platform maintains 5 billion data points on 30 million songs, including understanding of artist connections, song similarity, mood, style and detailed acoustic [...]

Clear Channel Announces Purchase Of Tumbplay's Cloud Music Biz, Takes On Pandora

Clear Channel Radio has officially announced the purchase of Thumbplay's cloud music service. The acquisition does not include Thumbplay's ringtone business which was sold toe SendMe Mobile in late March. Terms of either sale were not disclosed. In a move clearly aimed at Pandora and Songza, Clear Channel will use Thumbplay's platform to add services that enable listeners to create their own personalized radio stations. The radio giant also hopes to leverage Thumbplay's music technology and staff to accelerate development of Clear Channel's popular iHeartRadio. The combined platform will power the digital end of Clear [...]

Clear Channel Remains Ignorant of Pandora Appeal

Pandora is the most well-known and loved online music brand. At a time when many services are struggling to gain recognition among listeners, Pandora has established itself as the Google of music, i.e. the easy-to-use, go-to place for personalized radio. Clear Channel, having recently acquired the subscription service Thumbplay, has since announced plans to compete with Pandora. Chairman Bob Pittman believes it can create a better product than Pandora. According to him, what makes radio better than Pandora is that it's "curated and dynamically changes." [...]

Why Clear Channel's Web Radio Will Fail

Clear Channel has made it evident many times over the years that it's not in the business of music or news. No, it's in the business of consumer marketing. If Clear Channel's attempt at a web radio service can't sell the masses cars, beer, and fast food while still doing nothing to compete with its regular programing, it will fail. And that's the point, by design it should fail. I f by chance it's wildly successful, Clear Channel will kill it off. It's not like Clear Channel [...]

Clear Channel grabs thumbs

So, the mysterious "major media company" who is set to snaffle Thumbplay - the unpopular US subscription service - is revealed: All Things D report Clear Channel Radio are paying not very much to acquire the company. It sounds like they're less interested in the handful of subscribers, and are instead keen to use the Thumbplay technology to drive their radio business. The good news is all staff will be kept on; existing subscribers will be able to carry on listening in their dozens but, for now, Clear Channel isn't looking to grow their [...]

Behind Clear Channel..wow

Behind Clear Channel..wow Radio is so wack now its sad. I was flippin thru channels last night for two hours and there wasnt a single song that moved me... I dont mean move me in terms of making me want to dance. Theres plenty of songs to do that, i mean move in terms of made me think or stirred my emotions. The only station i listen to is 87.7 which is Chicago's smooth jazz. I mean... club music is fun and all but who wants to bust a groove inside their car or while chillin at the crib. Keep that ish in [...]

Royalty Rumble

Royalty Rumble Your favorite artist probably wouldn't mind "keeping it real" and flipping the bird to Clear Channel or Radio One if there wasn't financial benefits to be reaped. It is common practice for royalties to be paid to artists for having their songs blasted on the radio-or so you were taught to believe. The radio station does shell out a mandatory royalties to the composer, songwriter and publishing company associated with them. Unless that said artist a.k.a. performer can checklist either of the three on their resume, they get nada. That's nearly half-a-billion pennies bypassed [...]
