The humanitarian organization DARA issued a report Wednesday saying that 100 million people may die by 2030 as a direct result of climate change. 90% of those affected would be in third world nations; the remaining 10% are thought to be sick and elderly in places closest to the equator. With temperatures soaring due to mankind's abuse of the world's resources, startling and disturbing new environmental disasters are occurring each day. In July of this year 97% of the country of Greenland melted as temperatures across the globe reached new highs. Sadly, [...]

Camels, nature's original water conservationists, may be an environmental threat in Australia. Yesterday morning Newser reported a new bill in Australia that proposes offering carbon credits to citizens who kill a camel. According to the article, camels have particularly gaseous burps, and over the course of a year can omit 100 pounds of methane, about 1/6th as much as an average car. Australia has 1.2 million wild camels—the largest population in the world. Officials see them as pests, and [...]
Emergency on Planet Eaarth Humanity ravished Mother Nature and Mother Nature fought back. Thanks to global warming, ice caps and glaciers are melting, forests and wetlands are vanishing, and temperatures and sea levels are rising, along with famine, disease, and natural disasters. Meanwhile, we’re running out of fossil fuels, the lifeblood of modern life and, ironically, the fuel that is speeding its destruction. Even if the world miraculously got green overnight, it’s too late now to undo all the damage, but if we dig down and get creative, we can cut our losses and insure our [...]

I'm not sure what to make of this, but this past week, whatever I've been reading - or rather the fiction reading I've been doing for fun - has seemed to connect up with stuff I've come across in the course of my other work and what I think of as my "info-slog" - my daily attempt to work through what I think of as the more interesting and important websites and blogs and feeds. This week, for instance, I'm rereading Kim Stanley Robinson's "Science in the Capital" series (in part as a response to finishing his [...]
Considering that there is another snowstorm schedules to hit New York City this week, it's a little hard to think about things like global warming and climate change, but a group of 17 musicians are doing just that! Artists like Wilco , The Decemberists , Pearl Jam , and many others have all joined together to release Best of Bonnaroo , comprising some of their performances from the annual festival. The best part is that this compilation is completely free to download at musicforaction.org . In exchange, the bands request that you email Senators, the [...]
When it comes to reporting and reacting to whatever is going on in the world at the minute, I can't think of any musical genre that can beat hip hop in terms of completing the job with the speed (and, as often as not, the grace) of a runaway freight train. So, what's been topping the news lately? Of course, the COP15 Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen has wrangled a fair few headlines around the globe over the last week. And as sure as a non-binding agreement is as useful as a jail without a lock, [...]
Bloomberg Endorses Obama, Citing Climate Change.
Yup...it's official...Sandy has nudged Michael to Barack: In a surprise announcement , Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Thursday that Hurricane Sandy had reshaped his thinking about the presidential campaign and that as a result, he was endorsing President Obama. He said he had decided over the past several days that Mr. Obama was the better candidate to tackle the global climate change that he believes contributed to the violent storm, which took the lives of at least 38 New Yorkers and caused billions of dollars in damage. "The devastation that [...]

Bill Nye: Infinity, CNN: Zero
CNN journalist TV personality Carol Costello had Bill Nye on her show to discuss the Colorado wildfires, specifically, and climate change, in general. At one point, Costello says: "If you Google your name, 'Bill Nye,' you're the kooky guy who doesn't know what he's talking about... You want to defend yourself?" To which, Bill Nye - who, by the way, received a mechanical engineering degree from Cornell University under the tutelage of Carl Sagan and once worked for Boeing - responded about as best as one could under such ridiculous treatment. Take a Good Look at the Koala
Because it's about to go bye bye . Already under pressure from habitat loss and disease, koalas now face a new threat: climate change. They cope poorly with the droughts and heatwaves that are expected to become more common in southern Australia in years to come. To make matters worse, increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is reducing the nutrient content of eucalyptus leaves, their sole food source. Scientists say koala numbers have already declined sharply in some areas, and they warn that unless more energetic conservation measures are taken, the mammal's viability could [...]

Behind the Failed Copenhagen Climate Talks
Der Spiegel obtained recordings of the December 2009 Copenhagen Climate Talks and reveals that China and India led the efforts to prevent any action from being taken , that more time was needed , and that Obama stabbed Europe in the back . It's a fascinating look at international politics.
