An Early (And Alarmingly Sloppy) Clue to the New Direction

Keith Richards Jam Session October 2011 Key To The Highway with Johnny Depp
Keith Richards and Johnny Depp jamming on "Key to the Highway" last month at the premiere party for The Rum Diary . Which, by the way, is a pretty great little flick. And I can't believe that it's the first thing that writer/director Bruce Robinson -- who did Withnail & I , hands down the best film ever about the '60s counter-culture -- has been hired to helm in close to two decades. In any case, as always, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded [...]

Robert Palmer – "Johnny and Mary"

Robert Palmer – "Johnny and Mary" robert palmer - "johnny and mary" (download) Yep, this is from the same late rocker who brought hits like "Addicted to Love," "Simply Irresistible," and "Doctor, Doctor (Give Me the News)," as well as a member of the 802s band Power Station . This record, Clues , came out in 1980, long before he became a household name because of his MTV hits. This record veered more in a new wave/synth pop direction, often reaching Gary Numan -esque moments. [...]

Jeopardy contestants are unable to identify Foster the People as a clue. Are they lamestream or alt?

Jeopardy contestants are unable to identify Foster the People as a clue. Are they lamestream or alt? </embed> Foster the People is widely accepted as one of the biggest indie success stories of the year. They have taken one bubble gum indie song called "Pumped Up Kicks" and turned it into one of the most downloaded AND most-radio-played songs of 2k11. It seems like it is so culturally resonant that the song became a clue for their EXCLUSIVE TV DEBUT on the popular gameshow Jeopardy. I'm not even sure who watches Jeopardy any more. I think 'old lonely people', and weirdos with too much DVR space who still think that 'knowing trivia' [...]

Herman Cain May Or May Not Have A Clue About What Happened In Libya

Herman Cain on Libya
If a Tyler Perry movie ran for President, it would look like Herman Cain. I'm no political strategist, but I do know that Herman Cain is a blubbering idiot. But [...]

You Never Have A Clue

Grimes "Oblivion" There's a girlishness to the sound of Claire Boucher's voice on this track that makes the music seem a bit twee, but there's something a bit deeper and darker going on in the arrangement. The tune seems to tangle itself around a synth part that wouldn't sound out of place on a Knife or Little Dragon record, the vocal melody sounding a bit like someone trying to sing "I Think We're Alone Now" but not quite getting it right. The swirling piano-like sound and wordless vocals on the breakdown are another curveball – simple [...]

An Early, Northern New Jersey-Centric, Clue to the New Direction!!!

An Early, Northern New Jersey-Centric, Clue to the New Direction!!! From the fabulous George's Club 20 (in reality, a tiny little dive) in Hackensack, New Jersey -- the Paris of the Tri-State Metro area, and the current home (and childhood neighborhood) of your humble scribe -- please enjoy Jimi Hendrix (doing business as Jimmy James ) with Curtis Knight and the Squires , in a spirited performance of "Driving South." Recorded live, with better sound than you might expect, on the day after Christmas of 1965. It is [...]

Killa Cam'ron, The "Jeopardy" Clue

An Early (And On Balance Rather Disturbing) Clue to the New Direction

THE WEASELS "Sweet Geraldine"
Attentive or charmingly tolerant readers are aware that I have toiled since time immemorial for a garage band called The Weasels (although -- as you will soon see -- the perhaps more accurate phrase would be basement band). In any case, here's the recently rediscovered official video for one of our greatest songs -- the authoritatively rocking "Sweet Geraldine," from our late 70s masterwork Endless Bummer . A few details, for those who care. 1. Given that the audio on the film soundtrack [...]

SHM gives another clue about upcoming announcement at Creamfields, confuses us more

Swedish House Mafia Creamfields 2011
Swedish House Mafia played at Creamfields this past week, and of course they had to tease us about their upcoming announcement on September 23rd. The trio has just shared a video from the event, which has another clue thrown into the mix — a cryptic array of circles with letters and numbers you can see above. Now, we do see the 12 and 16 again (December 16, 161211.com ) that we told you about before, but now there are more even more numbers thrown into the mix. We still don't have a grip on what exactly SHM [...]

An Early Clue to the New Direction -- Special Celebrity Guest Edition!!!!

An Early Clue to the New Direction -- Special Celebrity Guest Edition!!!! A brief postscript to my paean to The Lovin' Spoonful 's late psych/pop masterpiece "Only Pretty What a Pity" from from a few weeks ago : I just got off the phone with the song's co-writer and lyricist, Spoonful drummer Joe Butler -- and I gotta tell you, to me that was as cool as if I'd been talking to a Beatle; I mean, I was and am a HUGE Spoonful fan -- and it seems I got the lyrics to the song slightly wrong. [...]

An Early Clue to the New Direction? Yes, and It's a Thin Line Between Love and Hate...

An Early Clue to the New Direction? Yes, and It's a Thin Line Between Love and Hate... From 1980, please enjoy Canadian New Wave outfit Red Rider and their huge in their homeland (but inexplicably not here) hit single "Don't Fight It." This is actually about 90 percent of a great record, but it's the ten percent that sucks -- i.e. most of the lyrics -- that simply drives me crazy. Everything about the music and performance here is just terrific, beginning with writer/singer Tom Cochrane 's nasal dead on Jim McGuinn inflections on the titular choruses, and [...]

Ach! It's an Extremely Teutonic Early Clue to the New Direction!!!!

Ach! It's an Extremely Teutonic Early Clue to the New Direction!!!! From 1965 (or thereabouts), please enjoy the incomparable and much-missed Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove as he conducts research into The Beatles hit recording of "She Loves You." A song which, as was said of Pat Buchanan 's famous speech at the 1992 Republican convention, probably sounded better in the original German . As always, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded to the first reader who gleans the clip's relevance to the [...]

Ah Yes, It's a More Warm and Fuzzily Nostalgic Than Usual Early Clue to the New Direction

Ah Yes, It's a More Warm and Fuzzily Nostalgic Than Usual Early Clue to the New Direction From 1965 -- and more specifically, from a recent MOJO sampler of representative Brit singles from that pivotal year-- please enjoy the best Liverpool band not managed by Brian Epstein , i.e. The Searchers , and their charming minor hit in the UK (here, not so much, although it got airplay in NYC as I recall) "Popcorn Double Feature." As always, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded to the first reader who gleans the track's relevance to the theme of tomorrow's Weekend Listomania.

Oh My God, It's Perhaps the Blandest Early Clue to the New Direction Ever!!!

Oh My God, It's Perhaps the Blandest Early Clue to the New Direction Ever!!! Younger readers may not recall this, but there used to be a rabid conservative Senator in the 60s and early 70s named Roman Hruska . Apart from his rabidness, history has taken little note of him, and with good reason, but if his name rings even a vague bell today it is because of his famously innovative defense of complete crap. From Wiki: Hruska is best remembered in American political history for a 1970 speech he made to the Senate urging them to confirm the nomination of G. Harrold Carswell to the Supreme Court. Responding [...]

It's Movie Week: Les Cahiers du Tom Green (An Early Clue to the New Direction)

It's Movie Week: Les Cahiers du Tom Green (An Early Clue to the New Direction) Okay, this is just too funny. An inspired wiseguy named RJ White has got a website at which he he posts mock-up fake DVD box cover art for Criterion Collection editions of movies you wouldn't...er...expect Criterion to actually put out. My favorite? Ah, Freddy Got Fingered . I actually got decent money to review it over at the TVGuide website in 2001, although in retrospect I probably should have put in for combat pay. As I wrote at the [...]
