This record, Clues , came out in 1980, long before he became a household name because of his MTV hits. Grimes "Oblivion" There's a girlishness to the sound of Claire Boucher's voice on this track that makes the music seem a bit twee, but there's something a bit deeper and darker going on in the arrangement. The tune seems to tangle itself around a synth part that wouldn't sound out of place on a Knife or Little Dragon record, the vocal melody sounding a bit like someone trying to sing "I Think We're Alone Now" but not quite getting it right. A brief postscript to my paean to The Lovin' Spoonful 's late psych/pop masterpiece "Only Pretty What a Pity" from from a few weeks ago : I just got off the phone with the song's co-writer and lyricist, Spoonful drummer Joe Butler -- and I gotta tell you, to me that was as cool as if I'd been talking to a Beatle; I mean, I was and am a HUGE Spoonful fan -- and it seems I got the lyrics to the song slightly wrong. From 1980, please enjoy Canadian New Wave outfit Red Rider and their huge in their homeland (but inexplicably not here) hit single "Don't Fight It." This is actually about 90 percent of a great record, but it's the ten percent that sucks -- i.e. most of the lyrics -- that simply drives me crazy.
