The gradual rising of energy and emotion on "Wolves and Owls," which opens Buxton's Nothing Here Seems Strange , reminds me of Spirit, and of (very) vintage Steve Miller, as much as it calls to mind artists who fall into the Alt. Country and/or Folk-Rock categories. That's how it feels when a band's intensely present. And how it feels when a sense of wonder permeates everything: Life isn't taken for granted. Air isn't taken for granted. Pain, joy, fire, and ice are noticed; heralded. A sucker for melody, I hear nothing noteworthily [...]

firstly, i was really surprised to see that cmj was still around, but it doesnt appear they actually are in the magazine business - the old business model. i subscribed for years from maybe like 93ish to maybe 2000? anyway, happy to see they're still around even though they've been really out of my brain since the end of my subscription. i knew they still did the cmj conference thing, but thought that may be in name only. either way.. its interesting to see who they, or the labels in this case capitol was pushing back in 03. most surprising [...]

Dear Readers, As you may know, every year between December and January here at The Deli we run a rather thorough year end poll for each scene we cover (currently 11). Its goal is to highlight the best emerging artist in scene. Past edition successfully highlighted indie bands that ended up becoming very successful, like Local Natives, Girls, Twin Shadow, Baths, Yeasayer and Chairlift just to name a few. More info about how the poll works can be found here . Here we simply want to summarize the progress of each poll, to allow you [...]
Dear Readers, Here's summary of the progress of each one of our 11 regional Year End Polls for Emerging Artists. Due to high number of NYC submissions we organized that scene's results by genre. A big thank you our sponsors for supporting our poll and providing prizes to the winners! [...]

Peelander Z @ Public Assembly, NYC: photo by Michael Ligon Last day/night of my trip to New York City and CMJ back in October 2011. (Next year, if I do the NYC trip again, I think I'll just post updates on a daily basis - this is too much work after the fact.) For my last day/night in The Big Apple I took it relatively easier than the other days: - Starbucks near MOMA - Radio City Music Hall - General Electric [...]

Emmy The Great @ Public Assembly, NYC: photo by Michael Ligon - started out the morning exploring the neighbourhood around my hotel (walked down Bowery and then turned on Prince; nice Ralph Lauren and Gant Rugger shops on Prince St, although both way too expensive for what I was willing to pay (I've slowly become a clothes horse over the last few years, although I never buy regular price) - walked to Lafayette for coffee at Dean & Deluca then went window shopping (David Z, Converse, Ben Sherman [...]

Lovely Hearts Club Presents: Conveyor - Mukraker We have been hooked on Conveyor ever since their EP "Sun Ray" landed on our doorstep. (Note to bands: handing out your music on freaky orange 123 vinyl is one sure way to get a label to give your demo a spin.) Unfortunately, we caught wind of this Brooklyn based quartet too late and missed out on their CMJ show. Apparently they impressed a few folks so much that We Listen For You [...]

Givers @ Ace Hotel, NYC: photo by Michael Ligon So yes, I'm pretty late on posting this (and still have to more days from my CMJ/NYC trip in October to post, so bear with me). And so here it is, point form, with a link to the photoset below: - swung by the CBGB's site again (noticed the etching in the concrete this time). - saw the Joey Ramone Street sign - @ Ace Hotel to catch tailend of Widowspeak 's set, part of [...]
Deli readers, indie bands and artists, This year, our Year End 2011 Polls for emerging artists are proving to be more challenging than ever, with 11 US scenes involved and 1,500+ submissions between our own system and the Sonic Bids applications. We are spending a significant portion of the our Holidays listening to your music (thanks for that by the way!), and we haven't even had the chance to check out the bands selected by our jury of local promoters, bloggers and scene makers yet... ANYWAYYYY... the results of [...]
![[Introducing] – Prussia](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3946124_lg.jpg)
Tweet I first became aware of plucky Detroit quintet Prussia because of their slot as openers for part of tUnE-yArDs ' past fall tour. Though I missed the tour, I was left wondering what kind of band could possibly open for Merrill Garbus' brassy, boisterous vocals and bodacious tribal beats. I got my answer when I caught Prussia during this past CMJ Marathon at a free show at Pianos. [...]

![Portugal. The Man perform acoustic set at The Ace Hotel [Baeble Session]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3902969_lg.jpg)
During this year's CMJ in NYC, Portugal. The Man stopped by The Ace Hotel for a semi-acoustic performance of a handful of tracks. In the interview portion, Zach Carothers and Ryan Neighbors discussed where the name for their latest LP In The Mountain, In The Cloud came from, how their acoustic performances are different from their electric performances, along with some other questions pertaining to the band's move from Alaska to Portland, and when they knew they "made it." Setlist :: [...]

Poliça at CMJ 2011 (10/21/11) Photo : Jon Klemm Poliça , a new non-Justin Vernon centered side-project of Gayngs and Bon Iver , have just announced that their debut album, Give You The Ghost , will be released on February 14, 2012 . No NYC tour dates have been scheduled as of yet, but I would expect that to change in the near future. For the uninitiated, here's a little more about the band: After collaborating [...]

Hope you are well. I need to vent a minute so bear with me. 2011 has been the most chaotic year ever, with so many curve-balls thrown my way and bumps in the road. It's been trying and unpredictable but somehow I've managed to work it out, but not without the help of my friends and family and also my own drive and relentless unwillingness to give up. In hindsight I realize that sometimes it is necessary to come full circle, even if that feels like being back at square one. 2011 saw me get blindsided by a layoff, spend [...]
