photo by Ben Mobley In just a few years, shape-shifting The Antlers have undergone more reinventions than many successful bands do in a lifespan. Hospice , their 2009 breakthrough, was a heartbreaker of a chamber pop album with an intertwined narrative about a dying cancer patient. Leading man Peter Silberman followed that up with last year's more expansive, electronic-leaning Burst Apart , before (figuratively) heading out to sea with 20122s Undersea EP , a lush four-song collection of hypnotic, nautical-inspired songs. They're a rare breed of indie rock band [...]
photo by Ben Mobley written by Chris Payne After watching Wild Nothing's one-man set-up morph into a five-piece, the audience at KEXP’s live broadcast at CMJ Union in New York City during the 2012 CMJ Music Marathon was treated to the virtual polar polar opposite: a string quartet (and more) via one K Ishibashi, aka Kishi Bashi . Although this year's 151a is his first LP, the Norfolk, Virginia, raised Ishibashi is no stranger to the stage. He's the frontman of the uptempo NYC synthpop group Jupiter [...]
Sky Ferreira has gone through so many incarnations in her career that it was tough to know what to expect from her performance last night (October 18) at Santos Party House in New York City for Neon Gold's New Shapes CMJ 2012 party: Polished pop princess? Twee indie darling? Snarling rocker? Last night's set positioned her squarely as the latter, with the singer performing a tight set that was soaked in distortion and muscular guitars. Platinum blond Cousin It hair obscured Ferreira's face, and her mien was sulky and apathetic, but in a likable [...]
photo by Lauren Slusher written by Chris Payne The story of Wild Nothing , aka Jack Tatum, is one of a bedroom musician finding his groove as a relative unknown and following his muse into uncharted territory. After composing his 2010 debut LP, Gemini , as a student at Virginia Tech, Tatum received enough acclaim to earn a following and pursue further recordings. Most recently, he's given us Nocturne , a sophomore effort that adds some well-deserved polish to Wild Nothing's 80s college rock-meets-dreampop sound without straying [...]
photo by Lauren Slusher Line & Circle have had a busy week! Touted as the next best thing from Los Angeles their infectious sound will definitely leave an impression. The vocals and lyrics of Brian J Cohen are rich and warbling. The combination of these two elements makes Line & Circle out to be an Americana post-punk mashup, like Modern English written for aimless drives through midwestern countryside. So far, they've got one single to their name, "Roman Ruins" and the b-side "Carelessness" both are available via White [...]
We love the CMJ Music Marathon ! The annual extravaganza is an almost unparalleled modus operandi for discovering the best emerging artists. The city transforms into a music mecca for both experiencing and exploring. Take for example, the buzz generating female hip-hop artist Angel Haze. The influential website Noisey/Vice premiered the 21 year old's new official video for "Werkin Girls" off her Reservation EP - she kills it on this track. Directed by Alex Lee and Kyle Wightman BRTHR, the chilling and creepy visual landscape debuts at a great time: right near Halloween! [...]
photo by Ben Mobley After years of friendship and floating around the Seattle music scene, musicians Christian Wargo (Fleet Foxes), Casey Wescott (Fleet Foxes) and brothers Ian and Peter Murray formed Poor Moon . Carving out their self-titled debut record from Wargo's fully-arranged songs, Wescott and Murray were eager to share the intricate harmonies, meticulous acoustic-minded arrangements and unique songwriting that give's Poor Moon its own fingerprint. Brimming with fantastic harmonies and waves of rich, warm texture that encompass the listener more with every listen, Poor Moon have made a home for themselves with the legendary [...]

Five years later the quintet is eager to release their debut album on Glassnote Records set to be available state-side early next year. CMJ 2012: Day 2 – JJAMZ @ Bowery Electric
I remember a time when I would be headed out to a show around 9 or 10 and someone in my family would say with exasperation, "I can't believe you're going out this late!" and I would kinda scoff and roll my eyes and think, "OMG, IT'S NOT EVEN LATE!" as I rushed out the door to meet my friends. Today, as I was putting on my Chucks in my apartment at 8:50pm in preparation to head over to Bowery Electric to catch a 9:20 set by JJAMZ for CMJ [...]

CMJ: Hype Machine Handpicked Showcase
Hype Machine held the first night of their CMJ “Handpicked Showcase” last night at Brooklyn Bowl. The six bands in the lineup were: JJAMZ, Indians, The Neighbourhood, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Virgins and SUA. JJAMZ is a veritable indiepop supergroup, whose members include guitarist James Valentine (Maroon 5), drummer Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley/Bright Eyes), guitarist Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet), bassist Michael Runion, and lead singer Z Berg (The Like). As the show’s openers, JJAMZ brought a ton of energy to the stage. Berg’s vocals seemed a bit raspier, more worn than on their album and after hearing her [...]
