Just over a year ago, Jen and I went into Manhattan on a bright October morning, heading to the Bowery Electric. It was the last day of the CMJ Festival and we were there to see Pearl and the Beard play a short set at noon. We were going to see them a few weeks later as the opener for the David Wax Museum and decided to go see them that day without having listened to any of their songs before. Not knowing what to expect, we went from the warm, bright sunshine to the cool, [...]

CMJ 2011 rolled into New York City, took over its streets and wore out its avid music fans for the better part of a week. I've only barely recovered, having seen 20+ bands, passed through too many venues to even count, and consumed more than a fair share of free booze. Without further ado, here are five highlights from my Part 1 coverage: 1. A Lull - Day 1, Lefse Records Showcase @ Pianos Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me that day. Though the venue is typically too [...]

Over the past year, Bronx-based musician/producer Gabriel Stark has gone from a well known New York producer to a fully fledged artist in his own right. With six releases being put out in one year, Mr. Stark has one clear goal, and that is to consistently hit the studio and improve during every second of studio time. His motivation hasn't gone to waste, though, with each new release improving on the last. With his latest album Thank You Starky , which you can listen to here , Stark has improved his lyrical abilities, production techniques, and, [...]

Indie rock band The Static Jacks have gone from being the little known New Jersey-based band Waterdown Clockwise to touring alongside Tokyo Police Club, White Denim, Biffy Clyro and Titus Andronicus. Since changing their name, the band was named Breakthrough Artist of the Day by NME on July 23, 2010, and this year, the New Jersey rockers were signed to Fearless Records. Since then, they've released their debut album If You're Young , and are currently on a U.S. tour supporting The Wombats. The band was also one of six bands to perform at SKoA and The [...]

CMJ was Gotye 's first time performing in New York, and the room was packed the two times I caught him. The Australian pop star had to strip down his set, and visuals, to fit in NYC's smaller clubs, and the results were very special and intimate performances. Shot for Time Out NY and Purevolume . Bowling Green, KY rock band Sleeper Agent have risen quickly over the past year, going from a duo, to a full fledged band, to putting out their debut album in no time at all. From touring alongside Cage The Elephant and Company of Thieves, to recording with producer Jay Joyce, it's clear that the Kentucky group has big aspirations. The band, who just wrapped up their U.S. headling tour , made a stop at this year's CMJ Music Marathon to perform at SKoA's very own CMJ showcase . During the showcase, I had the chance to [...]
Electric Guest 's clean and soulful sound is reminiscent of Rome , Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi's project. The room started buzzing when Danger Mouse entered with Julian Casablancas to check out Electric Guest at the All Things Go showcase. Shot for Time Out NY and All Things Go . Every October there’s one week of crazy madness in New York City as a thousand or so bands and a couple thousand music fans and tastemakers descend on Brooklyn and the East Village like a veritable swarm of locusts to separate the wheat from the chaff, to wheedle out the musicians that have a solid chance of becoming the next big thing. The College Music Journal’s Music Marathon, which you probably know as just CMJ, is an absolute whirlwind of running espresso-fueled around New York to seek out your favorite new artists in crowded, dark clubs – it’s more than [...]
New York City is pretty much already the definition of sensory overload, all by itself, on a random Tuesday, in the middle of nothing, when half of the city calls in sick. So when it's time for the annual cluster-you-know-what known as the CMJ Music Marathon ? If I were Johnny-Five , my circuits would have shorted. Lucky for you, I just eeked by in the "living to tell about it" category, so I here I am, living. And telling you about it! In no particular order, I present to you: my favorite finds from CMJ [...]

Today, you fall into one of two categories. Either you went to The Orchard Showcase during CMJ last week or you did not. I’ll first address those of you who did come… Dear friends, colleagues, clients, artists and random music lovers off the streets, thank you! Thank you for making ...
I saw Trash Talk during SXSW when they tossed around garbage cans after a peaceful James Blake set, but what made their CMJ shows special was their unusual hype. With publications like Spin, the Village Voice and others billing them as the band to see, kids showed up not expecting a hardcore band from Sacramento. As Lee let out the first scream, and the heavy bass popped with the cymbal, most of the crowd ran away from the stage and things got chaotic, in the best way possible. Shot for Time Out NY and [...]

Similar to ANR , The Stepkids are the full package; talented musicians with a tasteful creative vision. I've seen them three times and it keeps getting better. They were bummed they couldn't use their projector because of the sunlight, but I think the NYC skyline is tough to beat. Shot for Time Out NY and Purevolume Click here for more CMJ 2011 highlights.
