Let's face it, whilst the original Total Recall from 1990 is a cult classic, it's not a particularly good film. The film is the story of a struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu. The new Total Recall remake, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Colin Farrell, probably doesn't have a three-breasted hooker in it. Which, in my eyes, makes it completely irrelevant. As with the campy Verhoven/Schwarzenegger 1990 original, this one is based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.” But that's probably where the similarities end. In 1966, Philip K. Dick wrote the novelette "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." In 1990, the first Total Recall -based one Dick's story-was playing in theaters. Philip K. Dick is responsible for some of the best sci-fi movies of all time, another being Blade Runner , which was based on his story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? .
