Naming a film Epic is asking for a lot, especially when it’s based on a children’s book of a different and less demanding title, “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs” by William Joyce. Mirriam-Webster defines 'epic' as “extending beyond the usual or ordinary especially in size or scope.” To focus Epic on inherently [...] The post Film Review: Epic appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Director: Martin McDonagh Cast: Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson Certificate: 16 Running Time: 110 mins Release Date: 7th December As a dramatist Martin McDonagh was routinely referred to as the Tarantino of theatre. However, after winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short with the explosive Six Shooter (2004), the playwright swapped stage for screen, making his feature debut in 2008 with In Bruges . Written around the same time, Seven Psychopaths is his eagerly awaited follow-up. Sharp, self-referential and ultra-violent, it features all [...]

With a name like Seven Psychopaths you might be expecting a thriller or horror flick. But that's exactly what director Martin McDonagh wants you to think, in a film that confounds cinematic conventions. If anything, Seven Psychopaths is a film about film for film fans. Or should that be what Marty (Colin Farrell) wants you to think? Seven Psychopaths presents a film-within-a-film scenario. Marty is a drunken, fledgling screenwriter, but his only idea for 'Seven Psychopaths' is the title. [...]

In a single long-take, two mafia hitmen stand on a dam discussing the death of John Dillinger . A fairly normal scene in a post-Tarantino crime film; criminals can talk about Madonna's 'Like a Virgin', foot massages or how Dillinger dies. It is then that the movie takes an immediate and hilarious twist and what i'd come to expect from this movie went out the window. In his latest movie, Martin McDonagh does away with many recent storytelling conventions and crafts something unique and interesting. Marty (Colin Farrell) is having a hard time finishing his newest screenplay 'Seven [...]
Seven Psychopaths may only be the second feature-length film from writer/director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges), but it appears that he's already having his 8 1/2 moment. A fragmented and bizarre but explosively funny crime comedy, it is ostensibly the story of Marty (Colin Farrell), a screenwriter attempting to write his next script, titled...Seven Psychopaths. There's just [...]

Let's face it, whilst the original Total Recall from 1990 is a cult classic, it's not a particularly good film. Like so many sci-fi films it's based on a novel by Philip K Dick and harbours an intriguing story, but in hindsight the special effects are appalling and Schwarzenegger's acting is abysmal, even if the script is very tongue-in-cheek. Wiseman's updated film, however, takes itself far too seriously. The core concept is the same, but events unfold quite differently in his generic dystopian future. Bored with the routine of [...]
The trailer for Seven Psychopaths premiered today. The film is the story of a struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu. Seven Psychopaths starrs Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson , Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Abbie Cornish and Olga Kurylenko and will hit theaters on October 12.
Director: Len Wiseman Cast: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston Certificate: 12A Running Time: 118 mins Release: 29th August Take one cult classic, strip out almost everything that made it so beloved, pump it full of modern Sci-Fi action circuitry and what do you get? Surprisingly, an enjoyable and kinetic reimagining that succeeds on its own merits without the crutch of nostalgia. World War III has toasted the earth, leaving Great Britain and Australia the only bits left you wouldn't scrape into the bin (though they're both seemingly [...]
It's been four years since Martin McDonagh's dark comedy, In Bruges surprised audiences and critics alike. In his latest flick, he's assembled a murderers row of deadpan comedic talent, including Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and uh, Tom Waits? Yes, Tom Waits. It also stars Abbie Cornish, Bond Girl Olga Kurylenko, and Zeljko Ivanek. Seven Psychopaths , about a struggling screenwriter (Farrell) who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends (Walken and Rockwell) kidnap a gangster's (Harrelson) beloved [...]
Photos by G. Art by Hanksy. Clever one, Hanksy! I liked street artist Hanksy's work a lot until I saw a piece in the same exhibit (gasp) as a Banksy and then it was like seeing a full color portrait next to a xerox copy. However, I can appreciate that Hanksy is branching out and [...]
The new Total Recall remake, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Colin Farrell, probably doesn't have a three-breasted hooker in it. Which, in my eyes, makes it completely irrelevant. As with the campy Verhoven/Schwarzenegger 1990 original, this one is based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.” But that's probably where the similarities end. Whereas the original went for sci-fi camp, punctured with gasp-inducing violence - as is the Verhoven norm - the new flick, at least based on the first trailer, plays out like a grimy, sci-fi [...]

In 1966, Philip K. Dick wrote the novelette "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." In 1990, the first Total Recall -based one Dick's story-was playing in theaters. Philip K. Dick is responsible for some of the best sci-fi movies of all time, another being Blade Runner , which was based on his story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? . Of course, more sci-fi nerds would say Blade Runner (1982) is superior to Total Recall (any year). The fact that Ridley Scott directed Blade Runner is part of what made it the masterpiece it [...]
Here's the newly released teaser trailer for the Total Recall 'reboot' starring Co l in Farrell and Kate Beckinsale : The film is due for release on the 3rd August. I'm a bit unsure about it - but I did enjoy one of the comments on the Youtube page - renejpinto gave the world this nugget to ponder, [...]

"Just remember, you're still younger than Jennifer Aniston." And with those words, my friend Mara comforts me every year on my birthday, citing Aniston because she looks so great, and she's three months older than I am. I've always had a bit of a love-hate thing with her, and not just as in I love her and I hate her because she's beautiful. I loved her on Friends , but I hated how, as she made the transition from the small screen to the big one, she never seemed to get [...]
I have to admit that I wasn't planning to watch Horrible Bosses, but I do love Jason Bateman (did anyone else watch It's Your Move way back when?) so I thought it might not be the worst thing I could do to end a perfect lazy Sunday. While there were parts of the movie during [...]

In 2012, iconic rocker Tom Waits will go from being bad to just straight up crazy with his latest film role. Reuters reports that Waits has signed on to appear in Seven Psycophaths , alongside Hollywood A-listers Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Christopher Walken (Bond hottie Olga Kurylenko is also in talks to join the project). Directed by Martin McDonagh ( In Bruges ), with production from CBS Films, the film's plot deals with a struggling screenwriter (Farrell) who "inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends (Rockwell and [...]

Horrible Bosses Horrible Bosses is really a tale of two films, one is extremely funny and the other is misguided. The first half of the film hits all the right comedic notes. Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell are outstanding as they take their characters to the extreme. The writing in this section is witty and fresh and really raises the film above expectations. Unfortunately the film does not sustain its comedic high throughout. The minute the murder scene occurs, the film begins to lose its way. The story [...]
