Leonard Cohen - Revered songwriting icon returns with his first studio album in eight years and what some are calling his "most overtly spiritual" album in a musical career spanning more than four decades...two songs -- "Amen" and "Lullaby" were originally recorded in 2007 -- and Cohen performed "Lullaby" and new song "Darkness" during his most recent worldwide tour // Release : Old Ideas (January 31, Columbia) // Sounds like : Cohen's voice -- "a force of supernature" says the BBC -- is in fine form, strengthened in recent years from his [...]

'Simple Song' is the official first listen from The Shins new album Port of Morrow. The new album features 10 new tracks and 'Simple Song' is the #2 song from the album. It is a great sounding track that showcases James Mercer's incredible vocals. The Shins are one of the true indie pioneers, and it is nice to see them back in the game with a strong single such as 'Simple Song'. Simple Song by theshins Port of [...]

An oddly sequenced collection of Diamond's diamonds As anyone familiar with Neil Diamond's career will know, he's had more hits that could fit onto a single CD. But drawing across his stints on Bang, Uni, Capitol (for which he recorded the soundtrack to The Jazz Singer ) and Columbia, this twenty-three track set shows Diamond's maturation from Brill Building songwriter to hit-making singer to worldwide superstar to reinvented elder statesman. Of course, given the set's non-chronological programming, you'll only hear the actual arc of his artistic development if you [...]

Sounding like the bereaved love-child of Nico and Arcade Fire's Régine Chassagne, Brooklyn's synth-duo Chairlift are an unashamedly cool homage to the musical bombast of the 80s. 'Met Before' is a track taken from their forthcoming second album Something , and the anthemic chorus on show here is reason enough to further explore their ascent into the synth-pop rafters. Something is out 23/1/12 in the UK via Young Turks ; and 24/1/12 in the U.S. via Columbia [...]

you know you make me wanna shout ♫ Old Wives' Tale - Momma Devìl OK, what is born in Columbia, bred in Miami, and shreds some serious guitar action? The brothers of Old Wives' Tale! Felipe & Jamie Valencia bring some serious rock n roll heat with the throwback stylings of "Momma Devil," a jam tailor made for air guitaring the sheit out of your living room. Have a brother? Get him wailing on some high pitched karoke and tear the whole thing up. Just don't break the coffee table like last time. [...]

Manchester Orchestra confirmed their departure from Columbia Records in a new interview on Property of Zack : We are no longer with Columbia. We released our final record through them. [Our next] would just be through Favorite Gentlemen and maybe some other imprint. I don't think it'll be under the name Manchester though. I want to try to do something like Sgt. Peppers. Not musically, but those dudes made those records under the pretense of a different band. They became this other band and it allowed their creative ability to go wherever they wanted [...]

Billy Joel Piano Man (Legacy Edition) Columbia/Legacy Recordings [2011] (2CD Set) Fire Note Says: Billy Joel's Columbia Records debut gets the Legacy treatment with an excellent bonus disc. Album Review: Have you ever been to a college bar and heard "Piano Man" or "Captain Jack" playing in the background? Have you ever noticed that all of the youngsters know the words and sing along? Did you ever wonder why? [...]
An elegant, lovingly assembled collection of Leonard Cohen's body of work that just oozes class.
Classic Billy Joel album and a stunning 1972 live concert Billy Joel had a long career in music before his first commercial break with this 1973 album and its title hit single. He'd played piano as a studio sideman and recorded with several rock groups, including the Hassles and Attila, before settling into the singer-songwriter style that began with 1971's Cold Spring Harbor . With his solo debut having stiffed commercially, and label problems keeping him from recording a follow-up, he relocated to Los Angeles where he spent six [...]

Forty years of Tony Bennett's Christmas recordings Seventeen of these eighteen tracks have been selected by the vocalist from his catalog of albums and compilation appearances on Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album (1968), The Playground (1998), Our Favorite Things (2001), Christmas with Tony Bennett (2002) and A Swingin' Christmas (2008). The album's one previously unreleased title is a Marion Evans arrangement of the [...]
What defines an artist's career? In the case of Leonard Cohen, it's this 17-disc retrospective.

In my three years of blogging I've learned a number of valuable things. First, no matter how bad something tastes, if you dress it up and take a good picture it can still make mouths water. Second, the world will never run out of music (good or bad). Third, and perhaps most importantly, if a restaurant that has been around for over one hundred years suggests that you know nothing about them and insists on bringing you in for a tour and free meal you calmly say with a smirk " The Columbia ? Never heard of it. I'd love [...]
Idiosyncratic collection highlighting Paul Simon's songwriting This two-disc, thirty-two track collection (with a generous running time of 139 minutes) highlights the legendary songwriting of Paul Simon. The composer himself selected the tracks, touching on both hits and the lesser-known compositions of which he's most proud. The result is an idiosyncratic tour of Simon's catalog that will remind you of his broad commercial power, but key you into the depth of his craft as a writer. The selections focus almost entirely on Simon's post Simon & Garfunkel career, with only a solo live take of [...]
