Report: Day One @ Comic Con 2013

Report: Day One @ Comic Con 2013 Comic Con gets a pretty big draw in our nation's capital and it's no surprise considering that it all began right here at Dilli Haat. Judging by the reactions of people who were inquisitive about my presence in Delhi, Comic Con was not exactly the small-scale love affair with the medium it used to be, because the event began had seeped into the calendar of culutral events that Dilliwallahs love to attend. Indeed, the event has taken on a much larger following, with around 50,000 people expected to attend the event over its three-day duration. The fact is, Comic [...]

NH7 Quick Draw Vol. 3: Multiple Warheads – Alphabet To Infinity

NH7 Quick Draw Vol. 3: Multiple Warheads – Alphabet To Infinity "To satisfy a woman, you need multiple warheads." A NYC cabbie once said this to artist Brandon Graham, and that inspired the title of his 2007 one-off short, Multiple Warheads .  Set in a fantasy version of Russia, the story revolves around three main characters, an organ smuggler named Sexica (yes, that is really her name), her werewolf mechanic boyfriend Nikoli, and a badass biker-chick organ hunter, Blue Nura. Warheads was originally a porn comic, but Graham reworked it into a sci-fi romp where Sexica and Nikoli escape their hometown, Dead City, after [...]

Five at 5 – Vol. 26 – The Comic Book Edition

Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Today, we're getting over our Comic Con hangover with this special edition of Five at 5. Check it.  1. The Ramones - 'Spiderman Theme' Everyone loves Spiderman, ever since he was given birth to by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee in the early 1960s. The comic was turned into an animated television series which featured an insanely popular theme song. This theme song was covered by The Ramones on this album , where a bunch of artists covered their favourite theme songs. Great album, great cover, and great video. Check [...]

Preview: Comic Con 2013 Here at NH7, we are the masters of the Con! With the Third Annual Indian Comic Con set to take place once again in Dilli Haat, Delhi, from February 8 to February 10, we know just what to do to make the best of it. Last year's Comic Con (which we previewed here ) was a really significant event because legends of the industry such as Robert Crumb and Gary Groth (read our full interview with him here ) came all the way to Delhi to talk to us about comic books. This year however, there [...]

NH7 Quickdraw Vol. 3: The Underwater Welder

NH7 Quickdraw Vol. 3: The Underwater Welder We love our funny books (re: comics) here at NH7.in and we spend a lot of our time discussing and generally obsessing about them. We thought we’d share some of our favourite new comics with you on our new weekly feature, NH7 Quick Draw. Jeff LeMire is a Canadian cartoonist who has previously written and illustrated the DC Vertigo series  Sweet Tooth.  My introduction to his work was through this comic. The story of the series was weird enough to attract my attention. It's about a post-apocalyptic future, where the world is inhabited by humans and [...]

NH7 Quick Draw Vol 2: Journalism

NH7 Quick Draw Vol 2: Journalism We love our funny books (re: comics) here at NH7.in and we spend a lot of our time discussing and generally obsessing about them. We thought we’d share some of our favourite new comics with you on our new weekly feature, NH7 Quick Draw. "Comic journalism" may seem like an oxymoron, but then you probably haven't read Joe Sacco. Veteran journalist/cartoonist Sacco has, right from the beginning of his career, told stories of ongoing wars in Palestine, Iraq and Sarajevo in a way that's much more personal and subjective than a newspaper article or even possibly [...]

‘Hard Boiled’ revisited

‘Hard Boiled’ revisited I purchased and re-read Frank Miller and Geof Darrow 's Hard Boiled graphic novel this weekend, and enjoyed it immensely. Hard Boiled was first published back in 2000 (by Dark Horse Books ) and follows the story of Carl Seltz , a suburban insurance investigator, who discovers he is also a homicidal cyborg tax collector who happens to be the last hope of an enslaved robot race. Set in a [...]

"A Bored Young Lawyer Makes the Nation Ring with His Tunes" -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ------------- Hoagy Carmichael Bio from Picture News #1

"To Boys and Girls, Brothers and Sisters, Mothers and Dads: PICTURE NEWS looks the same as other books, but with appearance and method of presentation the likeness ends. PICTURE NEWS reports the news, the news with its endless appeal and its prophecy of things to come, in action and speaking and color pictures. Drawn pictures in bright colors with balloons, which are comics, have thrilled, amused, informed and taught. The U.S. Army has used them, so have important advertisers, and schools are beginning to know their value. [...]

Introducing Appupen

Introducing Appupen
George Mathen was the drummer of Bangalore post-rock band Lounge Piranha . Mathen has also been a graphic artist for a very long time. "I started off copying album covers. I used to own a lot of cassettes and I'd sit around replicating their covers. The same font and the same colours using sketch-pens. I think that's how I got interested in art" he told us when we met him in Bangalore. Mathen is also the alter-ego of comic book artist Appupen. Appupen might be known to Indian indie comic book fans for writing  Moonward,  a graphic novel that [...]

Comics 'till we die!

Comics 'till we die!
