Beyoncé, who is known in the music industry for always being nice or at least trying, just trash talked a whole family of celebrities. And not any family, the Royal Family Of Pop - The Jackson. “I grew up upper-class,” she said. “Private school, My dad had a Jaguar. We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons. But I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation.” Wow, Beyonce, you had a jaguar. That quite something. [...]
After reading an article in this months Financial Times How To Spend It magazine I felt compelled to share with you the gist of an article that you will soon be able to read in it's entirety online. How To Spend It is a monthly magazine supplement inserted free into the FT and is filled with consumer items that even 99% of their affluent readership probably cannot afford. So this aspirational, hideously bourgeois magazine is filled with [...]
In this edition of JumpTheTurnstyle's "Comment Of The Weak", we turn to visitor Lou Roe , who had some simple yet distinct words about his opinion of Kanye West ( on this post here ). His tactful choice of delivery, coupled with a powerful and succinct descriptive noun (in webspeak form, might I add) clearly allowed the readers of JumpTheTurnstyle a direct glimpse into the harsh personal opinion Lou Roe holds for Mr. West and the auto-tuned road his career has travelled. There was no room for debate in his remark. There was a distinct [...]
If you've had even a passing interest in current affairs over the last few months you'll have noticed that the nation's in the grip of a “recession” (that's merely official parlance for “two quarters of economic slowdown” and doesn't mean that the sky is falling in, lest I be guilty of the kind of scaremongering that got us all here in the first place...) and thanks to our oh-so-clever friends across the pond in yankville we've all got a little less money to spend. So what does that mean for us self-styled music obsessives? Those of us who [...]
Goodness, it's that time of the week again already. This week's top five was suggested by Andy (the drummer in my band) on account of the current rodent-like structure that has somehow attached itself to the lower part of my face. So without further ado, I proudly present the Top Five Beards in Indie Rock*. I've been quite strict with my judging, so in the interests of parity, here's the criteria I was assessing: First and foremost: THICKNESS. Any scrappy, bum-fluff attempts at facial furniture (Brandon Flowers, Chris Martin, et al ) need [...]
I've made some spurious claims about being an mp3 blog lately, as well as contradicting myself with regard to not posting stuff from major labels, so I guess I'd best clarify my position. Basically, posting downloads of other people's music is a breach of the originator's (the artist, composer, whoever...) legal rights. Most blogs mp3 justify themselves by talking about "promotion for the artist" and other (quite frankly rather shaky) claims about new audiences buying CDs because they got a taster from a blog somewhere. I certainly purchase music that I've found out about from blogs, and there's [...]
Visitors of JumpTheTurnstyle.com! Your voice is now on full blast. We are now going to be highlighting the best comment from each week's worth of posting every Sunday - in a new feature cleverly titled: "Comment Of The Week Weak". Just remember, every time you make an ambiguously racially fueled statement , obnoxiously flirt with Dr. Leigh, or hide what should have been a legitimate blog post in and of itself under the comments section: we will call you out. Feel free to nominate these comments as [...]
It seems that lately there's an awful lot of singer/songwriter/producers who're finally getting out of their bedrooms and into the real world. By this I mean that they've actually recruited other musicians and started gigging as a band. But is this a good thing? Back-in-the-day, They Might Be Giants lost a great many of their most devoted fans when they changed from being an arty two-piece that used tape loops and quirky gimmicks to being a five-piece band. The music itself didn't suffer (it arguably became better), but they certainly lost some of their cool. But what about [...]
Okay, I know this came out a while ago, but being as I'm kinda new to this whole blogging business I've a backlog of things to talk about. This album, Amateur Dramatics by Minotaur Shock, links in nicely to the Glasses post from yesterday. That is, many people have accused Minotaur Shock of having "done a Radiohead", but whereas The Glasses did pretty much the same things as the Oxford proggers, the sale of Amateur Dramatics is almost exactly the opposite: he's put an exact price on each song. Assessing each track by criteria such as [...]
You may have read my post/rant earlier in the week about the coming war betwixt the major labels and the blogosphere, but now it seems that things are coming to a head. The Daily Growl (an exceedingly excellent music blog, and a source of discovery for many of my favourite bands; from Esser to Rob St.John) has reported similar post-deleting atrocities occurring on his site . But all is not lost: Ed, from the 17 Seconds blog, (and who's Glasvegas post's deletion caused such an uproar at Song, by Toad) seems to be rallying his supporters and [...]
Uh-oh, I guess it's time to keep a bucket of cold water by the front door (how come no one really goes in for the whole "trick" side of trick-or-treating any more? Tis a darn shame...). So, while all the yuppies are boogying down to the strains of The Monster Mash and making out like they're yanks, and gangs of marauding hoodies go from door to door menacing old ladies for sweets, what is there for a discerning music fan to do? Well, fear not kids, the answer is here. Gaze on my works, [...]
Curses! I've been trying for hours now to post links to some mp3s I've uploaded to Xdrive (recommended to me by the Hype Machine) but so far I'm not having much success. However, once I manage to do it I'll be a fully fledged music blogger. And, as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility... Obviously, posting songs for free download when an artist wants people to pay for them isn't really doing anybody any favours. But yet there seems to be quite a community of music bloggers who do just that, and are often encouraged [...]
Everyone seems to be compiling lists lately, from the Guardian to Song, by Toad , so I figured I'd have a go at it. Being as its now Wednesday (only just...) I guess we'll make this a regular feature: a Top Five once a week. This might even convince some of you lurkers out there to get stuck in and leave a comment, as I'm sure everyone will have their own views on what should/shouldn't make the lists... So, this week its gonna be songs about hate! [...]
"So, you're a creationist, huh? And you've got kids, eh? Well... THEY CAN'T PLAY WITH TOY DINOSAURS!!!" "No, son, put it down. It's not for the likes of you. You see, your favouritest toy in the world is all a LIE!!! Hey, come on; don't cry.... hey, quit with the screaming already!..." and so on and so forth...
So it's been a while since we've heard from folks about how we're doing. We've gotten e-mails here and there and word of mouth. But we definitely want to hear what you all think of our podcast. If you've got some time, jump on over to our review page on iTunes and give us a score. 1 star means really crappy and 5 stars means amazing. Share your thoughts, praise, criticisms with us and if you think we need improvement, let us know and we'll do it.

Not Everyone is a Phish Fan Now
Yesterday felt like a really special day to me. I was generally buzzing the entire day after the news was confirmed that Phish was getting back together. It's especially fitting for me given that this blog started around the band's tour in 2004 leading up to Coventry. Now that they're coming back, [...]

Comment: You're kidding, right?
Bill O’Reilly--yes, that Bill O'Reilly--just had a little op-ed in the Boston Herald , and this man can't possibly mean what he says. He's got to be doing this as a joke, but the rest of us haven't gotten it yet. Good one, Bill. The piece is titled "Born in U.S.A.? Then why’s The Boss trashing it?" , and this is where most reading of this opinion piece should just stop. Yes, it should just stop right there. That's because the title is based on a false assumption: Springsteen's "Born In the U.S.A." is a song [...]
