I do everything in my power to steer clear of mainstream media (especially since I once worked for a news station and I sat in meetings where executive big wigs literally created news stories to scare people into submission). With that being said, there’s a lot of misinformation and confusion spreading about #OccupyWallStreet. I’ve seen people making a mockery of the major tenet of #OWS, “We Are [...]
My purchase of a crystal lowrider fitted with a teal dyed leopard skin leather interior and an all neon lined stereo system found ridicule at first. “It’s ugly.” “It ruins the neighborhood.” “It’s making my eyes go all ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and I’m not even a Nazi.” And I was like guys, trust [...]
When I saw the Glow in the Dark tour with my friends in 2008, I waited til Rihanna's set to go get a hot dog. And then I wandered around the United Center aimlessly for an extra 10-15 minutes, just because I thought it would be more fun and interesting than seeing "Shut Up and [...]
My experiences with Kendrick Lamar and Nosaj Thing are mostly limited to seeing their respective names on blog posts a dozen times a month. Still, I've heard Kendrick on a solo track or two that elicit immediate "This dude can spit his ass off"-type thoughts, while also being blown away by his cameo on "The [...]
Mentioning The Death Of Postmodernism Is En Vogue We've seen two articles in the past week mentioning the death of Postmodernism. In the socio-political sense we wrote about this in our MA Thesis published in 2005. Guess this proves that...

Photos by G. Now We Are Too Big To Fail! A week ago , I visited # OccupyWallStreet for the first time down at Zuchotti Park in New York. It was one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen as you could practically smell frustration and change in the air. A week later, the weather is a bit cooler, but one thing remains - the people have just about had it with corporate greed, being lied to by governments and religions and a [...]
In 2006 Spank Rock released YoYoYoYoYo, an extraordinarily fun (and smart) record that talked about little besides women, and Naeem Juwan’s involvement with them. The LP succeeded because it was the independent rap scene’s response to the mainstream. He talked about girls much in the way rappers on the radio did, but the beats belonged [...]

To note Van Morrison 's greatness is almost a thankless exercise at this point. The man has inspired so many, created so much great music, and been around so long, that he has left an indelible imprint on popular music forever. His hits are so recognizable that they are in danger of being written off as simply relics of college freshmen everywhere. And yet, somehow Morrison manages to maintain his stature. His greatest work is simply so great that it is impossible to defile it with any amount of over-playing. All of [...]

Facebook was conceived as a place to connect, a place to communicate. But over time, something changed, and it began to be more of an exercise in self-promotion and a document of our collected vanity. In Zuckerberg & Co.’s newest “ Timeline ” feature, far more emphasis is placed on one’s self rather than one’s network. The concept behind Timeline is that within each of us, lays a fantastic, compelling multimedia autobiography. By showing every miniscule, infantile detail as wrinkles in a much larger patchwork of stories, Facebook believes they’re making something beautiful. And while they may just be, they [...]
Tristan and Michael saw Das Racist, Danny Brown and Despot last weekend in Pawtucket. This piece is a companion review to the Danny Brown article, and will also run in the coming issue of The College Hill Independent. Danny Brown entered the stage at The Met wearing a Mishka varsity jacket, skinny jeans, and Jordans—also sporting [...]
Tristan and Michael saw Das Racist, Danny Brown and Despot last weekend in Pawtucket. This piece is a companion review to the Danny Brown article, and will also run in the coming issue of The College Hill Independent. I was first acquainted with Das Racist by a friend of mine who was at Wesleyan while [...]

This week see's the release of How To Go , the brilliant new EP from Scottish four-piece Trapped In Kansas . Both epic and playful in equal measure, it's a constantly inventive record that is not only the best thing the band have ever done but is also one of our very favourite releases of the year. Glacial, post-rock style guitar parts wash over epic, straight-up rock songs; the kind of which Biffy Clyro would happily give limbs to still be able to write. We enjoyed How To Go [...]
One of the joys of growing up in the twenty-first century has to be digging through your parents’ old records and seeing what kinds of gems you can find. Taking the crates in from the garage/down from the attic, rooting through them for an hour or two, plucking out the perfect disc (“Sweet Baby James” [...]

Autograph and photo courtesy of the G Archives. Mark McGwire Former baseball player and juicer Mark McGwire turns 48 today. I met Mark on so many occasions when he first started playing the game. He has always been very tall and extremely muscular, which is one of the reasons he is such a great player. I stopped following the game in the late 1990s and the next time I heard about McGwire was when there were steroid usage allegations against him. I recall seeing pictures of him on the news. It [...]
"F.A.M.E.": it's "defiant," it's "triumphant," it's a "comeback," it's pretty dope. As far as Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition's (many) advance songs go, up until this point Young Jeezy has felt 50/50; "Lose My Mind," and the lesser known but also very awesome "Scared Money," featuring Plies and Lil Wayne respectively, both exemplify to me [...]
Today, Grantland blogger Rembert Browne wrote a post discussing how T.I.'s release from jail and the climax of the Atlanta Braves's collapse work as a pair. You can check out the entire piece here, but the aspect of the post I'll be responding to can be found below: T.I.'s freedom gets our hopes up because [...]

The Cure has been nominated for induction into the joke that is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kudos! Except, wait, Robert Smith is pissed about something. Evidently, The Cure's "current" drummer was left off the name check list on the band's bio at the official Hall of Fame site. In the Hall of Fame's defense, The Cure's revolving door policy for members over the past 30 years is bound to result in a few oversights. Granted, Jason Cooper has been in The Cure for 17 years. But in all honesty The Cure isn't being [...]

Over the last eleven year’s TIFF has slowly become a major when it comes to Academy Award winners. Two of the last three Best Picture winners ( Slumdog Millionaire and The King’s Speech ) were also winners of TIFF’s prestigious People’s Choice Award. 2009 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker , did not win the People’s Choice Award, but it screened at the festival the same year as Slumdog Millionaire . If you look closely at the Best Picture nominees over an eleven year span you will noticed that eighteen of the sixty-five [...]

It used to be that summertime was my favourite time to go to the movies. I’d go to the theatre on every opening weekend to see the week’s newest big release. I remember great opening weekend releases that I looked forward to with excitement and that delivered on their hype like Jurassic Park, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Dark Knight. I found the slate of summer movies this year pretty underwhelming with too few appealing and original films to move me. The summer movie lineup over the past couple of years has been dominated by too many [...]

The world changed drastically ten years ago today. I know that I have talked briefly about my experiences at TIFF on September 11, 2001 in the past, but it seems especially fitting today. In honour of the ten year anniversary of 9/11, TIFF has commissioned a short film that will be played prior to all of today’s screenings. The film will document people’s experiences at TIFF the day of 9/11. Believe it or not I was asked to take part in the production (huge thanks to Lucius Dechausey!), but my contribution did not make the final cut. [...]
