Over the past few years, Converse has been teaming up trios of unlikely artists to record songs for the show company; the last one had Matt & Kim, Andrew W.K., and Soulja Boy. The next entry in that series, however, looks to be its biggest-ever by far; it'll have Gorillaz hooking up with former LCD Soundsystem honcho James Murphy and OutKast's Andre 3000. According to The Sun , the track is called "DoYaThing," it'll be up on the Converse website 2/23, and it apparently features Damon Albarn rapping two verses, which should [...]

Wavves and Best Coast double dip in the royalty pot by licensing last year's " Got Something For You " - originally written for Target - for a Guitar Center holiday ad. Can they do that? I guess they can. Watch the commercial after the jump. Read More...

What is that awesome song in that really annoying commercial? A question I ask myself often. Television commercials can be a great way to find new music or revisit a classic. In the most recent Microsoft Epic Share spot there is a banger called "The Born" by underground producer Falcon and in Kmart's newest campaign I rediscovered Public Enemy's horn-stabbing anthem "Harder Than You Think" - am I being brainwashed? STREAM: Public Enemy - "Harder Than You Think" STREAM/DOWNLOAD: Falcon - "The [...]
Morrissey is either getting even more into the Christmas spirit than everyone else, or he's cold getting paid. The man recently licensed a cover version of the Smiths' song "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" to the British department store John Lewis for a holiday-themed ad, and we've got that ad below. "You Might Get Stuck On Me," a new song from the British twee-pop duo Summer Camp, appears in a new video for the cosmetics company 17. In the clip, a boy and a girl sit in a room together while a bunch of stretchy Mr. Fantastic arms twist all around the room. I have no idea what the hell is even going on, but the song sounds nice. Summer Camp themselves also show up on the TV that the couple is watching. Check it out below. Read More...
The New York clothing company Mishka has already earned a certain place in my heart for distributing great rap mixtapes like Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire's Lost In Translation , Main Attrakionz' 808s & Dark Grapes II , and Stalley's Lincoln Way Nights . Now, the company deepens its musical connection with a new promo video in which musicians like Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham and house revivalists Azari & III rock the clothes. High Park, Zed's Dead, and Jokers Of The Scene also show [...]
For the social cost of a "Like" on Facebook, you can check out French electronic duo Air's new film for Cartier, Painted Love , which I must say gets pretty freaky. Head to Cartier's Facebook page watch the short film.
This isn't the '90s, and these days no indie bands are getting cards pulled for licensing songs to advertisers. In fact, it's generally accepted that ad-licensing money is one of the few economic things keeping many indie bands afloat. But when it comes to the much-hated Bank Of America, the rules, it seems, change. Read More...
It's been a minute since we've heard from luxuriant French makeout-music duo Air, but they'll soon be back with some music for the French jewelry brand Cartier. Brooklyn's Waverly Films have made a four-and-a-half minute short film called "Painted Love," which will feature a score from Air. The film is set to debut 11/9 on the Cartier Facebook page , as Women's Wear Daily reports .

Neon Indian's " Polish Girl " soundtracks the latest Victoria's Secret ad, which you know, is a pretty sweet placement for the Brooklyn-via-TX band even if Alan Palomo doesn't get to lurk around the commercial leering like some others got to do. Watch the spot below. Read More...

It's actually M832s " Midnight City !" I got them confused (I suppose there's a reason we put them back to back in our monthly mix ). All apologies. Read More...

Leonard Cohen recites a version of his spoken word "A Thousand Kisses Deep" in this new spot for Sony 3-D TV. Cohen doesn't license much, so we're going to go ahead and guess that the 3-D version of Avatar really inspired him. Read More...

On The Wire , Detective Jimmy McNulty once snorted that Bushmills is "Protestant whiskey." Well, maybe Justin Vernon just doesn't care. (Or maybe he's Protestant? I have no idea.) In any event, Vernon and some key folks from Bon Iver are participating in an ad campaign for the whiskey. Their "Since Way Back" campaign also features people like Chromeo, Theophilus London, and Elijah Wood. According to a press release , the people participating in the campaign will appear in ads and develop "custom pieces of music and art," so I guess we'll see what that means. [...]
The new commercial for the video game FIFA Soccer 12 perfectly chops up " Ice Cream ," the Matias Aguayo collab from Battles' new album Gloss Drop , with footage of random people (including Steve Nash, Hope Solo, and Seth Meyers) playing the video game. It's an extremely well-done commercial, even for those of us who don't care much about soccer or video games. And anyway, the world needs more examples of electro-math-rock bands coming together with Canadian basketball stars. Watch it below. Read More...

Alright, the latest edition of "Does [insert huge company] rip off [insert artist]?" is a little hairier - this possible invocation of Phoenix's "Lisztomania" isn't as cut-and-dry as our last adventure into this territory. But, admittedly, it's pretty darn close, melodically. While I don't have as sharp of an ear, in terms of key changes and what have you, as some who frequent the site, it seems like there's enough distance here to avoid a lawsuit? Maybe not. The last time out, we had a rip-off that tread into a bit of a gray area thanks to a key change, but this recent Nokia ad is way more of an open-and-shut case. This is totally the same song. "VCR" by the the xx. I hope they have the best lawyers in indie rock. Read More...

Reader Michael chimed in last night when he spotted the eerie similarity between Broken Bells' "The Ghost Inside" and a song used in a new Dell commercial. Michael writes: Note that the melody is slightly different (and in D rather than E), but the drumbeat is exactly. the fucking same. Also, note how the chorus merely escalates rather than changes musically, offering further proof of comparison. And they threw in some dumb lyrics in the end as an effort to make it sound original. ("I just like lookin' in the sun"?) It's not. [...]

There's not much to it, but here's a stylized clip of Julian Casablancas in a French perfume ad. In it he crowd surfs and presumably smells great. Read More...
Matt & Kim & Soulja Boy & Andrew W.K. are the latest triple-billing for Converse's corporately underwritten original MP3 project "Three Artists, One Song." (Previously: Julian Casablancas, Santigold, and Pharrell ; later, Best Coast, Kid Cudi, and Rostam .) Matt produced. The project attempts to fuse these three artists styles, but succeeds in fusing together these three artists' feet. (See: That photo.) Download at Converse .
Last night while watching something on TV (Stewart or Colbert or Breaking Bad are my only options these days, so one of those) I heard a lady rhapsodizing about T-Mobile's best deal ever, and then heard that sermon paired with an unreasonably catchy jingle that reminded me of the New Pornos' "Moves." Turns out it was the New Pornos' "Moves." We all need to put food on our families, you know, and commercials are one way songwriters do that these days. No problem. The last time this happened with this band it was "The Bleeding Heart Show" [...]
