Visiting Nashville during the CMT Awards last year was one of the more frightening and eye-opening experiences of my life. Never before in an American city have I felt more like a foreigner. Walking into cowboy-filled saloons with skinny jeans and thick-rimmed glasses is not something I would recommend for anyone. I mention this because I wish the newly-formed WRLDS was around during that time, so I can appreciate Nashville a bit more. The synth-pop duo create a dark universe through hazy synths on debut single “Communicate”. Les Priest and Jake Goss are now my two [...]

What happens when 115 Instagram users get together in Santa Monica for a meet-up? Ravi Vora made a short video of the experience. I'm sure there's plenty of snark I could throw around at this concept, but anytime online communities meet in the real world to do their thing, that's a good thing right? [via doobybrain ]

I went to the 8th Ottawa Community Record Show that took place at St. Anthony’s Hall in Ottawa. This time I didn't buy anything. Just wanted to check it out and take some photos. I got there at around 1:30pm. I was told when it opened at 11am it was chaotic with "record nerds" wanting to get the first copies of a certain album. Next one will be on October 6th. Here [...]

One of the things I envied about San Diego, second only to the fact that it has warm beaches and better Mexican food than Taqueria Cancun, is the Southern California city's monthly gatherings known as Commune Wednesdays . On the last Wednesday of every month, local bands, DJs, artists and designers come together for a free event that supports and promotes San Diego's burgeoning art scene and the local community. Commune has finally found its way up to San Francisco, giving us another reason to celebrate creative energy and rally behind a worth-while cause. With an overarching [...]

There's always a worry when a precociously talented youngster makes a ridiculously brilliant record and then disappears for, in James Holden's case, seven years. We say 'disappear' but due to the quality of his The Idiots Are Winning LP, and the status of his hand-picked remix projects, its never felt like a full removal. Still, seven years is a decent chunk of time by anyone's standards; so where do we find him on new single Gone Feral ? Has he lost his touch? Is there a lack of creativity to explain away the time? [...]

Djedjotronic , a staple in the techno genre, has recently released a new EP, Kaiko, featuring four tech house numbers that will surely aim to please all palettes. My particular flavour is Back - a slightly off-beat pulsating techno tune. Cool cool cool. Download: 04-back.mp3 [...]

Get Lifted Tonight recently sat down with SafeHouse Movement owner and founder, Joey Cusano who explained his quest for change, recent projects and plans for the future. Working endless hours to come up with unique ways to tackle world homelessness head on, Cusano has developed a strong team of like minded strategist to spread his dream into two continents. However, he says, it is not just about himself. Through help from the community and those interested in getting involved, SafeHouse Movement can bring real change to countries in need. Have a look at what all Joey had to say! [...]
1999 is regarded as one of the “golden years” of trance music, with good reason. Naming all the classic records released in those twelve months would lead to this article being nothing but a list, so let’s concentrate on one- Armin van Buuren’s seminal track Communication . Sweeping the trance scene in the summer of '99, it later went on to see two more releases, Communication Part 2 in 2000 and Communication Part 3 in 2007. If we’re honest, the difference in these versions was negligible, but now it’s alive once again, with [...]

In exactly one week, we will be treated to the fourth - and, let's all pray not final - season of Community. NBC - knowing the anticipation is high - [...] The post Watch: 'Community' Season 4 Teaser Clips appeared first on The Smoking Section .

The Americans Well, it’s a new year and that can only mean one thing, it’s time for me to sit back on my ass and watch some new shows. Here’s a look at some of what I’m most looking forward to watching, recording, renting and/or streaming in the upcoming Winter – Spring 2013 TV season. In terms of new shows, I'm really keen to see what FX's The Americans looks like, IFC's Out There could also be right up my alley, and while I haven't been [...]
Josh Miller, who founded Branch (a service I love, btw), talked with his younger sister to find out what technology young kids are using . The main takeaway is that Instagram is huge, SnapChat is huge, Facebook is a dreaded timesuck with an image problem, Tumblr is seen as a tool used by middle schoolers, Twitter is non-existent among this population, and places to discover links - reddit, BuzzFeed, et al. - are barely a blip on the radar. Oh! And his sister can barely remember her Gmail password because she hardly ever uses [...]

Never one to pass up a Slighter breaks remix, here's one from 2005 that he's just re-released. Free download. And there's a comp at his Facebook page, with details below. I was never a big fan of BT, though I recall Slighter was. BT was too trancey for me. That's why this breaks remix works. There's not a trace of trance, just a cool deep breaks version that is a perfect bit of home listening. If I was churlish, I'd say an instrumental version would be even better. Free download. One of my favorite Seminole Heights eateries, Ella's Folk Art Cafe , is hosting a Farm to Fork event next Monday (November 12th). Proceeds from the event goes to support Community Stepping Stones, a non-profit that works with at-risk teens through Community Art programs. The dinner will feature a four course meal of local fare including items such as white rabbit pate, seasonal pickled vegetables, water buffalo robiola buffalina, sweet corn risotto with cayenne bacon, barefoot farmer calabaza pumpkin and willow greens, white plantation rabbit roulade with white chocolate mole, lime & cassava fritter with smoked chillie jam, and [...]
Dear NBC: Your unfairly maligned sitcom, that is beloved by audiences far larger and respected by critics far greater than some of your other shows currently airing, which you shelved indefinitely for its fourth season , is allegedly set to return to the airwaves on November 9th . Unfortunately, for American audiences the show is airing on CityTV in Canada. Now, to be fair, the CityTV webpage says there is no return date for 'Community', except tentatively for January 11, 2013 . But, the executives in charge might want to [...]
