Photos via Dana Pacifico Four Tet stopped by Webster Hall on Wednesday as a part of the Red Bull Music Academy's many shows currently taking place across the city. Electronic acts can be a tough sell on me, as I often left disappointing by a lack of diversity during a set, but Four Tet delivered Wednesday night at Webster Hall. He played a highly enjoyable set that was easy to vibe along to as well as to connect with emotionally. He mixed a thumping persistent heavy bass with [...]
Photos by Carrie Johnston In his fourteen-year career as a rapper, Sage Francis has garnered fans through clever navigation of language around topics ranging from personal anguish and societal distrust, to being awkward around girls. His DIY approach has kept those fans loyal since making his first recordings out of his apartment in Providence, Rhode Island in 1999. After working with the big labels for the middle section of his career, he has gone back to his homemade label, Strange Famous. Thankfully, Sage’s success has not catapulted him through the roof of fame and [...]
Photos and words via William Bruder All had been quiet on Shout Out Louds ' homefront since mid-2010 when the band announced they would be on hiatus while they rediscovered their sound. So when last November rolled around, and the ‘Blue Ice’ single was released, I could not have been more excited for what was to come. With the single came news of an untitled album, with the news of an untitled album came the known fact of the tour to go along. I knew that I would be at at least one stop. Let’s [...]
Photos by Carrie Johnston A prominent downtown venue on a warm Saturday attracts all species of night crawlers. Due to this, nothing exclusive or particular about VietNam playing at Dante’s on such a night struck me. The noncommittal crowd was thin to begin with, then fattened when VietNam started, and mostly disappeared before the end. Save for the second opener, Small Arms, the whole experience- the crowd, the music, the low red lights, the air… was like the low hum of a car engine on a three-hour highway jaunt. The most desolate moments [...]
Tonight The National played a special secret show at the Park Ave Armory. It was a private invite only show (thanks Joe ) that was a taping for Live From the Artists Den . This performance came only two days after playing "Sorrow" for 6 hours straight . Coming into the show I had no idea what to expect. I figured since it was a free show, we would get a small but sweet set: a bunch of new songs as well as a few of the older classic cuts. That would have [...]
Not many bands out there are doing what Foals do. Mixing elements of math-rock that makes you rock out and dance simultaneously, as well as creating blissful moments of sincere beauty that will stop you dead in your tracks. They put all of this on full display with relative ease. Many people who were in attendance on Friday night are calling it one of the best shows of 2013 - if not the best. I can't really argue with that. Blondfire opened things with a poppy set that was [...]
Ski Lodge are quickly emerging as one of the best new talents around. They opened for Born Ruffians tonight at Bowery Ballroom , performing a worthy set that had all who got there early enough bobbing their heads. There seemed to be a lot of shock in the crowd at how good Ski Lodge were as they are still a fresh face to the general public, and because they were kicking all kinds of ass. Their set was a vibrant one that you couldn't help but shuffle along to. Theirs a whimsical quality to their music, even if [...]
Wavves , FIDLAR , and Cheatahs got together Friday night to play a solid bill at Shea Stadium. All three bands praised the venue as one of the best in the city, and it's hard to argue with them. It's as intimate of a spot as they come, they have cheap beer, and it seems like it's filled out by real music fans. Cheatahs kicked things of with a set filled of heavy guitars soaked in reverb. The London band possess an ample skillset that gives them a kinetic boost while on set. They were [...]
Houndmouth are a band that have done all the right things to get to where they are. They have taken their time to get there, taking the right steps and making the most of every opportunity, making any of us who lucky enough to watch their rise feel pretty special. The band have improved literally every time that I've seen them, and I'm sure that they won't stop here. Their performance at Rockwood Music Hall on Thursday was my 3rd time catching them in NYC, and it was the fullest and most [...]
Caveman's largest hometown show in New York City came tonight at Webster Hall, and it was a good one. I've seen the band at nearly everyone of their NYC shows since their 2011 CMJ set at Glasslands that made me a fan. They have not let me down yet, and they seemingly just find ways to just get stronger and stronger. They're amazing. They did a good job combining the textures and context of both their excellent debut album CoCo Beware and their newly released self-titled album, which this show [...]
Hot Chip seem to have grown as a band exponentially every time that I see them. Not even in terms of their band member count - which has definitely grown - but in scope. The crowds and venues just keep getting bigger and bigger. This makes sense, Hot Chip have a sound that attracts all kinds of music fans. They can just as easily bring down the house with huge dance vibes as they can rock out. They even have an emotional core that can devastate you just as equally. There's not much that Hot Chip can't do. [...]
Now I can always tell my kids that I once saw Fleetwood Mac at the Garden, and that it was great. To no surprise, I was easily one of the youngest fans in attendance. You had a crowd full of truly appreciate fans who truly loved Fleetwood Mac spanning more years of concert experience than I can even imagine. The show started at 8:20 and went well on until about 10:30, no openers, no bullshit. Just two solid hours of Fleetwood Mac. This lineup of Fleetwood Mac featured Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, and Mick [...]
Yeah Yeah Yeahs show at Webster Hall was everything that a rock show should be for a band of their stature. They packed in the venue and made it seem far too small for a band of their epic caliber. The mid-sized venue was a perfect choice to host an intimate (for them) night of celebration for the release of their brand new album Mosquito . The night was more like a homecoming celebration of the New York City band's incredible career, a full fledged salute to their fans who have watched them grow to incredible [...]

The Griswolds: Concert Review & Photos!
Click to view slideshow. It was once The Griswolds' dream to headline at the Oxford Art Factory after several times supporting other bands. But it was more than a dream for their final, headlining Australian show, in their hometown, before their overseas tour — to be sold out. Out of the eleven times I've seen them, I have no doubt that this lucky eleventh time, the 3rd May, was their absolute best performance. Supporting them were Oceanics and Panama — unfortunately I didn't get a chance to catch Oceanics as they were on rather early, but [...]
