The View @ Knitting Factory (April 7, 2013)

The View @ Knitting Factory (April 7, 2013) When I was a 16 year old hot off my discovery of Arctic Monkeys, I was a bit naive in my belief in the NME and any band that they would get behind. I remember them hailing a band called The View as one of the next hot bands, and it came true as they went #1 in their native UK seemingly out of nowhere. Now, often with NME buzz bands there is natural backlash, the sort thing that can almost ironically stunt a bands growth after the quick fire promotion. This seemed to happen to the View [...]

Spiritualized @ Secret Project Robot (April 2, 2013)

Unknown Mortal Orchesta, Foxygen, Chvrches, Port St. Willow, Beach Fossils, Ra Ra Riot, Palma Violets. These are some of the bands that I've caught so far in the first quarter of 2013, mostly at mid-level/pretty intimate venues. These shows and bands are not connected, but they all have one thing in common after tonight. They were larger capacity shows than the show that Spiritualized performed hours ago tonight in Bushwick. The show took place at a hole in the wall named Secret Project Robot that usually serves as a art space. The show was capped at [...]

Dillon Francis & Oliver Live @ House Of Blues, Boston 3/27/13

Dillon Francis is certifiably the biggest goon on the DJ circuit; we've known this for a while now. From his random, hysterical outbursts on YouTube, to his second-to-none official store, he can't be beat when it comes to personality. Last Wednesday, he welcomed himself to Boston by changing his pants ... Read More

Photos | Major Lazer + Lunice + Paul Devro @ Roseland (PDX)

Photos | Major Lazer + Lunice + Paul Devro @ Roseland (PDX) Photos by inger klekacz M ajor Lazer is not what you'd call a "sit down" show. It's not even what you would call a "personal space" show. Major Lazer is a writhing mass of young flesh, dancing and jumping and gyrating to carefully crafted beats and explosions of light. Do not bring your mother to this show. Unless your mother loves vertically spooning with excited 18 year olds who have all the love in the world to share at a sold-out concert. In which case, you should [...]

Best Of Treefort 2013

Best Of Treefort 2013 Best Of Treefort Music Fest 2013 WORDS and PHOTOS by BEN LINDBLOOM So many memories; two lost camera lenses due to drinking with Ryan and Whitney of The Grizzled Mighty for 3 days, ending each night at China Blue, conducting an interview with Kithkin over pumpkin waffles at my mom's house, being berated by Wax Idols for not having our (Travis and my) shit together, a last minute interview with Widowspeak after their show, [...]

[Live Review]: Sigur Ros @ Madison Square Garden (March 25, 2013)

[Live Review]: Sigur Ros @ Madison Square Garden (March 25, 2013) Sigur Ros have a special sound that is truly larger than life. No one can argue that. With that said, they also seem like a modest band that is sincerely happy to make music that people enjoy. So to see them play the mecca of arenas, Madison Square Garden, is a fulfilling win for all the good guys. But to see them harness the energy of such an event with the power and finesse that they achieved tonight, damn, sometimes life can be pretty extraordinary. The Icelandic band can instantly go from soft, sleep-worthy beauty, and then [...]

Alt-J @ Webster Hall (March 23, 2013)

Alt-J @ Webster Hall (March 23, 2013) Hundred Waters are a band I keep missing. I had various chances to see them at CMJ and most recently, SXSW, but we just never made the magic happen. It just so happened that they are touring with Alt-J so it made things possible. Hundred Waters are best described live as delicate beauty. There's a water-like feeling to them that makes sense since they come from Florida. The mostly electronic band weave in funky jazz elements that give them a sound that is all entirely theirs. The fact that their signed to Skrillex's OWSLA will never make [...]

Chvrches @ 285 Kent (March 19, 2013)

Chvrches @ 285 Kent (March 19, 2013) There's been a lot of hoopla around Scottish band Chvrches . They've been one of the buzzier bands of the last few months, and for good reason. First, the spelling of their name. It just stands out. Then you take in to account their sound. Absolutely shameless addictive synth-pop that easily casts a spell on you if you let it. The first time I heard their single "The Mother We Share" I was sold. Next single "Recover" hit me just as hard, and it may be even better. They played both of those [...]

Swim Deep @ Mercury Lounge (March 19, 2013)

Swim Deep @ Mercury Lounge (March 19, 2013) Swim Deep made their NYC debut during an opening gig at Mercury Lounge this tuesday. The boys who are making huge waves over in their native land of the U.K. are little known here minus anglophiles and bloggers. The band are extremely young but are more than capable of re-creating their work live. Their songs bristled with youthful excitement live, a bright experience for all lucky enough to see them in such a small setting. "Honey" and "King City", the bands big singles, and rightfully so. They were the clear standouts out of the set and prove [...]

SXSW 2013 In Photos

SXSW 2013 In Photos Mac DeMarco Over the course of SXSW I took thousands of photos of the dozens and dozens of bands that I saw. I doubt you read all of my individual posts. If you did, cool! If not, here are the best photos that I took (in my humble opinion), which I wanted to share with you guys. Earl Sweatshirt The Thermals Parquet Courts Allah-Lahs [...]

[SXSW]: GEMS @ Hickory Street (March 16, 2013)

[SXSW]: GEMS @ Hickory Street (March 16, 2013) GEMS instantly hooked me in with their lovely debut single "Void Moon." Everything that they have shared us since has had us swooning for more, making them one of my favorite new bands to emerge in recent months. Seeing them play at SXSW was a treat as it was one of their earliest shows to date, in the rawest form. They put on a lovely show and brought the songs to live deftly. It's still an early juncture of GEMs career, so I'm sure they will only improve with every show that comes to them. [...]

[SXSW]: Delorean @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013)

[SXSW]: Delorean @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013) Something just seemed off about Delorean's gig at Fader Fort. It may have been the environment, but I just never really got into their set, which was disappointing because I was expecting a set that I would be able to dance too. They just came out kind of flat and didn't really leave that plateu. Still willing to seek them out when they come to NYC next, but I was left wanting a lot more. [Show as slideshow]

[SXSW]: Earl Sweatshirt @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013)

[SXSW]: Earl Sweatshirt @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013) I had no problem moving around Fader Fort or getting into photo pits or any of that stuff at all during SXSW. That all changed when it was time to see Earl Sweatshirt . Shouldn't be a surprise as the member of Odd Future had been virtually missing for a while, making these early shows a must see for everyone. Earl came out with Flying Lotus as his DJ (as Captain Murphy), and entertained with a well mannered set. For a relatively youngster, Earl has a fine command on the stage and was doing his thing with [...]

[SXSW]: Mac DeMarco @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013)

[SXSW]: Mac DeMarco @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013) Only a few hours removed from seeing an electric set from Mac DeMarco at Hotel Vegas , I now find myself seeing them again. This time it was a daytime show at the Fader Fort. The set was a bit more laid back and there were no tents for Mac to hang off of, but it was still an enjoyable offering that really solidified Mac as one of my favorite new artists to see live. [Show as slideshow]

[SXSW]: Parquet Courts @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013)

[SXSW]: Parquet Courts @ Fader Fort (March 16, 2013) It makes me shake my head at myself thinking that my first time seeing Brooklyn band Parquet Courts was in Austin, Texas. Go figure. But, I finally saw them, and it was good. They have a really tight sound that is anchored by tight guitar riffage with compliments by a tense rhythm section. They make playing look so easy, which only adds to their charm. I still can't shake their song "Stoned and Starving", which has been bouncing around my head for the entire week since I left the show. [...]

Photos | Efterklang + Nightlands @ Doug Fir (PDX)

Photos | Efterklang + Nightlands @ Doug Fir (PDX) Photos by Colin McLaughlin O n a night where I had to make myself go out, Efterklang impressed. It takes quite a bit of skill to turn someone's whole mood around, but that's exactly what Efterklang did with their slightly operatic and frequently creative arrangements. Maybe the lush instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies that guide "The Klang" - as Dave Hartley (of  Nightlands ) jokingly called them - is sourced from the same stuff that makes them such thoughtful crowd pleasers. Or maybe indie rock doesn't give us many opportunities [...]

Veronica Falls @ Bowery Ballroom (March 8, 2013)

Veronica Falls @ Bowery Ballroom (March 8, 2013) Openers Cold Showers' bass broke literally a few seconds into their set. He went on to borrow a bass from Veronica Falls, and the showed carried on. The band crept around in cave-like darkness not revealing much but the oft-hand silhouette or shadow. There was an uncanny likeness to Joy Divison for the dark-nature of their post-punk rock, with a emphasis on heavy bass-work and persistent pounding drums. Veronica Falls released new album Waiting For Something To Happen last month and it's a great listen. The band were up in spritis, [...]

Night Beds & Indians @ Mercury Lounge (March 7, 2013)

Night Beds & Indians @ Mercury Lounge (March 7, 2013) Last night Night Beds & Indians played shared an intimate evening together at the Mercury Lounge . Both acts released their debut albums this year. Night Beds' Country Sleep came out February 5 via Dead Oceans , while Indians; Somewhere Else came January 29 via 4AD . Photographer Daniel Topete was there to capture the evening. Check out all of his photos, posted below. Night Beds: [...]
