Sigur Ros have a special sound that is truly larger than life. No one can argue that. With that said, they also seem like a modest band that is sincerely happy to make music that people enjoy. So to see them play the mecca of arenas, Madison Square Garden, is a fulfilling win for all the good guys. Hundred Waters are a band I keep missing. I had various chances to see them at CMJ and most recently, SXSW, but we just never made the magic happen. It just so happened that they are touring with Alt-J so it made things possible. Hundred Waters are best described live as delicate beauty. There's been a lot of hoopla around Scottish band Chvrches . They've been one of the buzzier bands of the last few months, and for good reason. First, the spelling of their name. It just stands out. Swim Deep made their NYC debut during an opening gig at Mercury Lounge this tuesday. The boys who are making huge waves over in their native land of the U.K. are little known here minus anglophiles and bloggers. The band are extremely young but are more than capable of re-creating their work live. Their songs bristled with youthful excitement live, a bright experience for all lucky enough to see them in such a small setting. "Honey" and "King City", the bands big singles, and rightfully so. GEMS instantly hooked me in with their lovely debut single "Void Moon." Everything that they have shared us since has had us swooning for more, making them one of my favorite new bands to emerge in recent months. Seeing them play at SXSW was a treat as it was one of their earliest shows to date, in the rawest form. They put on a lovely show and brought the songs to live deftly. It's still an early juncture of GEMs career, so I'm sure they will only improve with every show that comes to them. [...]

Something just seemed off about Delorean's gig at Fader Fort. It may have been the environment, but I just never really got into their set, which was disappointing because I was expecting a set that I would be able to dance too. They just came out kind of flat and didn't really leave that plateu. Still willing to seek them out when they come to NYC next, but I was left wanting a lot more. [Show as slideshow]

I had no problem moving around Fader Fort or getting into photo pits or any of that stuff at all during SXSW. That all changed when it was time to see Earl Sweatshirt . Shouldn't be a surprise as the member of Odd Future had been virtually missing for a while, making these early shows a must see for everyone. Earl came out with Flying Lotus as his DJ (as Captain Murphy), and entertained with a well mannered set. Only a few hours removed from seeing an electric set from Mac DeMarco at Hotel Vegas , I now find myself seeing them again. This time it was a daytime show at the Fader Fort. The set was a bit more laid back and there were no tents for Mac to hang off of, but it was still an enjoyable offering that really solidified Mac as one of my favorite new artists to see live. It makes me shake my head at myself thinking that my first time seeing Brooklyn band Parquet Courts was in Austin, Texas. Go figure. But, I finally saw them, and it was good. They have a really tight sound that is anchored by tight guitar riffage with compliments by a tense rhythm section. They make playing look so easy, which only adds to their charm. I still can't shake their song "Stoned and Starving", which has been bouncing around my head for the entire week since I left the show. [...]

Photos by Colin McLaughlin O n a night where I had to make myself go out, Efterklang impressed. It takes quite a bit of skill to turn someone's whole mood around, but that's exactly what Efterklang did with their slightly operatic and frequently creative arrangements. Maybe the lush instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies that guide "The Klang" - as Dave Hartley (of  Nightlands ) jokingly called them - is sourced from the same stuff that makes them such thoughtful crowd pleasers. Or maybe indie rock doesn't give us many opportunities [...]

Openers Cold Showers' bass broke literally a few seconds into their set. He went on to borrow a bass from Veronica Falls, and the showed carried on. The band crept around in cave-like darkness not revealing much but the oft-hand silhouette or shadow. There was an uncanny likeness to Joy Divison for the dark-nature of their post-punk rock, with a emphasis on heavy bass-work and persistent pounding drums. Last night Night Beds & Indians played shared an intimate evening together at the Mercury Lounge . Both acts released their debut albums this year.
