Kids these days. After playing a spirited hour long show, the young, Australian indie pop group San Cisco left the stage to a large applause from the young and enthusiastic crowd. As the applause continued, it became apparent that the group was going to come back for the traditional encore. Only they didn't. Taking the microphone, lead vocalist Jordi Davieson (who looks like a cross between Joseph Levitt Gordon and Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig) simply explained that they had run out of songs. "We don't have any more songs, but if you want, we'll [...]

Frank Yang Even though Sigur Rós' show at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night was announced back in November , I was on the fence about attending, rationalizing that I had seen them twice just last August , and as much as I enjoyed the atmospheric charms of last year's Valtari , I didn't know that I needed to see it live again. Then word came that not only would the staging of the show be different this time, thanks to the shift in venue from [...]

Like a poor man's Weezer, who instead of making a wrong turn at Beverly Hills, found themselves down in skid row, JEFF the Brotherhood not only understand the irony of a couple of everymen cranking out rock anthems, they embrace it. It was evident when brothers Jake (guitar) and Jamin (drums) Orrall anonymously took the Grog Shop stage with sheepish grins, Jamin dressed all in white with a Grateful Dead t-shirt and a conservative hair cut, Jake in black, with a sleeveless metal shirt and long, stringy hair. And even more evident once the brothers cranked out "Heavy [...]

Photos by Carrie Johnston M att Costa is the musical equivalent of a contemporary Hollywood romantic comedy. He makes good kids smile and bad kids cringe. Now, it’s perfectly natural for couples to get cuddly, even make-out-y at a concert, but the critical mass of either (attempted) ballroom dancing, making out, cuddling, and looking longingly into one another’s eyes was enough to make Hugh Grant throw up in his mouth a little. Costa even employed an Anna Karenina lookalike (his wife?) to do little more than play tambourine, making the boys swoon and the girls wish [...]
Collaborate Philly hosted its first annual Philly Beergasm charity fundraiser last night, and the event proved to be just as exciting as its title. The networking collective for the local creative community joined up with Beer Cakes Philly to throw the beer and food tasting party at Yards Brewing Company, with proceeds benefiting Philabundance. Though ... Continue reading
To celebrate Kodaline's recent release of their High Hopes EP, AMBY wanted to send out a special post displaying all our lovely articles, interviews and features on the band. We've loved their music from the start, and are extrememly excited to see them play The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on May 14th. So for those unfamiliar, just getting acquainted, or who also love the band, please check out the below links where you'll find all things Kodaline! [...]

"How many of you are in bands? Well, I grew up worshipping Green Day - so, keep it up." And like that, Best Coast' s Bethany Cosentino summed up the entire night at Chicago's Allstate Arena. Here's why: She's in her mid-twenties, loves Green Day. The guy she sang "Our Deal" to in the rafters, who held two beers and stomped around and screamed and wore a brand new 99 Revolutions t-shirt, loves Green Day. The same goes for the two dozen tweens that were intermittently carried out of the stuffy, sweaty, and fleshy GA section - they love [...]

The haze has lifted. Apollo shifts on his perch. This week has sucked. My top twelve things - or whatever - of Treefort 2013. 1. A heavy shortage of neon, face paint, feathers, glow sticks, and all other things that cause your brain to fucking hurt. Often, these festival accoutrements hinder all good times. Idaho must have banned them statewide. Only one dude was wearing paisley pants, and his name is Seth, and he's a good dude. 2. Ample parking. (Or "How I Learned to Love Having My Mom Drive Me to Bars.") 3. [...]

Frank Yang I had to think for quite a while about including this show under my Canadian Musicfest coverage. Although the festival would like you believe that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' visit on Saturday night was as a festival headliner, everyone knew that this show had little to nothing to do with Canadian Musicfest and everything to do with the tour in support of their latest effort, Push The Sky Away ; I don't even know if any of the VIP wristbands promised access actually got in. [...]
Mika burst on to the scene a few years ago with a sugary pop masterpiece, Life in Cartoon Motion, and his joyful and colorful live shows, chock full of balloons, confetti, streamers and a giant pop band behind him. Now, he's on tour supporting his newest album, The Origin of Love, and he's taking a markedly different approach. [...] The post Show Review: An Intimate Evening with Mika at Great American Music Hall, 3/25/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

"And ask if we're ready for something less obscure." It is hard to say what is and isn't obscure these days, but pulling up to the house turn intimate, 20 to 30 person, concert venue in the Western Suburb of Batavia one might expect to be in for something slightly obscure. On the chalkboard out front it is written, "Tonight: Felix & Lyons and Venna". The Office is located in the same parking as a church and for this 7pm show and I arrived along side church patrons. Entering the venue it is clear how The [...]

Phosphorescent' s breakout new record, Muchacho , builds upon Matthew Houck's barstool folk-rock with elegantly produced dashes of disco and electronica; seas of strings and piano keys. It blurs the line between Houck's contemplative, forlorn folk balladry and assured, lighthearted roots-rocktimism. Tuesday night, Phosphorescent tried to bring the melancholic party to the Rock and Roll Hotel. Blown out speakers and horrid sound mixing tried to stop them. Though the sound screamed out of the monitors with pain, it was clear that Houck's outfit could tear the roof off of a better-equipped venue. Their [...]

Frank Yang If you're ever debating what to do on a given evening of either Canadian Musicfest or NXNE , you can always do far worse than to simply post up at either The Horseshoe or Lee's Palace for the entire evening. These Toronto anchors always host a solid bill of bands, both local and international, buzzy and unheralded, covering a swath of genres that will surely have something to delight the ears. Granted, I was there with a more specific mandate than to just take in some music - I wanted to see [...]
Of course, there's a downside to making a record as intricate and delicately arranged as Phosphorescent's Muchahcho. The higher you set the bar for your listeners, the harder it is to live up to your own ambition. On the first night of tour, with a new lineup of players in tow, Matthew Houck told a ... Photo by Ben Lindbloom Because it wouldn't be Treefort if we didn't get a little emotional about it. Sunday brought a cloudless high desert sky, finally rewarding festival attendees with a day of perfect weather. The day's lineup at The Crux was packed with Boise natives with Tuck Nelson , Clarke and The Himselfs , and Grandma Kelsey giving the afternoon a wide range of sounds. By the time Grandma Kelsey set up her shrine in front of the stage, The Crux was at capacity. This one woman outfit is [...]
A little bit of advice to everyone who is about to interview or even interact with someone whose work has had a profound impact on you: Do not drink three cups of coffee and skip lunch. Don’t do it, friends. You will shake, and it will seem just like your tenth grade production of Godspell [...]

Frank Yang Show cancellations are pretty much part and parcel of the Canadian Musicfest experience, particularly when you're most keen on the international acts who've been duped coerced into playing the fest, but it's especially disappointing when it's a) one of the bands you most wanted to see, b) they were one of the very first acts confirmed for the fest in November , and c) it happens just hours before showtime. But things like lymph node infections do happen, and with Efterklang singer Casper Clausen out [...]
![[Live Review]: Sigur Ros @ Madison Square Garden (March 25, 2013)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4851986_lg.jpg)
Sigur Ros have a special sound that is truly larger than life. No one can argue that. With that said, they also seem like a modest band that is sincerely happy to make music that people enjoy. So to see them play the mecca of arenas, Madison Square Garden, is a fulfilling win for all the good guys. But to see them harness the energy of such an event with the power and finesse that they achieved tonight, damn, sometimes life can be pretty extraordinary. The Icelandic band can instantly go from soft, sleep-worthy beauty, and then [...]
There was a moment last night at Johnny Brenda’s when British singer Kate Nash laid it all out for the crowd. “I’m living just for me and not for what you might write about my hair and body,” she grunted into the mic, during punchy new number “Oh!” It was a true rock star moment: ...
