As part of their first national headline run, The Neighbourhood is releasing three limited split 7″ singles that will feature new songs from their and their supporting acts, Lovelife , The 1975 , and JMSN that will only be available at the shows. Have I told you lately that I Love You? In the first release, The Neighbourhood digs back to the band's hip-hop roots (and also Jesse Rutherford's rapping roots that was pre-The Neighbourhood). So smooth, so addicting. Something about Jesse's voice is so endearingly vulnerable and raw. It's [...]
In general, I’m not always immediately drawn to modern acoustic or folk artists but every once in a while I’ll have the pleasure of running into one who transcends any misgivings I may have about that kind of sound. This was ... Continued
You don't throw a music festival on the beach and neglect to invite Best Coast . Gulf Shores isn't what Bethany Cosentino had in mind when she named her band, but even she saw the parallels: "This next song, it's about California, but all of the things I talk about in it you guys have here." They then commenced with "The Only Place," one of the nearly indistinguishable (but identically awesome) sunshine refractions they performed at the Chevrolet Stage just after noon Sunday. Cosentino is one of those pop savants whose every lazy melody seems like the product of [...]

The week begins slowly but ends with a heck of a bang down at Echo Beach. Here's what to expect: The Boxer Rebellion , Opera House, May 24 UK shoegaze-ish outfit comes to town to support their new album Promises (review). CBC Music Festival , Echo Beach, May 25 A stellar line-up of Canadian talent includes Corb Lund , Sam Roberts , [...]
The Hangout organizers presumably intend the word "Hangout" to be read with leisurely fellowship in mind, and certainly that matches the vibe here in Gulf Shores. But one passable alternate reading is "hang out" as in "Letting it all hang out," as in my bare gut protruding across my belt line, as in eating something called the Damn It To Hell Sandwich that will undoubtedly contribute to that gut's expansion, as in then dipping my legs into a swimming pool while sipping beer and watching live music. As in wringing the most possible sensory pleasure from 10-12 hours at the [...]
Here's a rundown of the non-NXNE shows announced during the last week: Jont , Free Times Cafe, Jun 4 Jim McCarty , El Mocambo, Jun 6 Elliott Brood , Harbourfront Centre, Jun 29 CSS , Opera House, Jul 4 Jadea Kelly , Dakota Tavern, Jul 11 JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound , Horseshoe Tavern, Jul 12 Jay Brannan , Lee's Palace, Jul 17 Goodnight Sunrise [...]
The first considerations when attending a music festival on the beach are sartorial. Do you opt for filp-flops to facilitate the inevitable footwear removal and thereby risk blisters from stomping on plastic slabs all day, or do you go with sneakers to account for all that pavement pounding and thereby risk carrying them around all day (or worse, trudging around with sand in your shoes)? Do you wear a swimsuit to allow for a quick dip or more conventional pants so you can keep your phone, wallet and other necessities safely close by? Do you bring along accessories like a [...]
On their Facebook, London's Lovelife describe themselves as a "pop band". But after meeting the band and watching them play live, it's safe to say that Lovelife are a passionate and infectious pop band. The last time AMBY spoke with Lovelife was back in October. The band were set to release their very first EP El Regreso , and now they are soon releasing their third EP Stateless . It's kind of crazy how fast time flies! Back in October, I mentioned to Lovelife's Lee Newell how we really hope they play a gig in Toronto [...]
It's much easier, nearly four decades later, to separate the music from the moment when it comes to Wings Over America. Back then, this multi-disc concert souvenir from Paul McCartney seemed like a triumphant musical summation. In stark contrast to his modern-day globe-trotting ways, McCartney hadn't at this point toured America in 10 years - and those concerts dated to [...]

Derriere Force One has made it's way across the pond and Turbonegro take over NYC tonight at Irving Plaza . The Jugend will be all denimed out and ready to rock to that Deathpunk noise they've been waiting for. Tony Sylvester will do his best to convert the Hank lovers. I hope the set isn't filled with too much Sexual Harassment material. I want to hear the classics.
At Live Oaks Bar and Ballroom, Monroe, La.: I’ve seen Tom Keifer a few times over the years with Cinderella, mostly in arenas and ampitheaters, and always left happy. But none of those shows were quite like the one in store for this night. First, the room had a cool vibe with its brick walls and New Orleans-style gas lamps. [...]

Sun; pouring rain; more sun; more pouring rain - the Sweetlife Festival definitely had its share of weird early summer weather. But none of that detracted from the experience that was had listening to the bands playing there last Saturday. If anything, the pouring rain added to the religious experience - especially during Phoenix's set. One after another, amazing artists played at main stage, ensuring that no one would give up their seats along the pavilion - that is, until it started pouring. Though I have never previously listened to [...]

Style and space are what emerge as distinctive after seeing Voices of Black and Gold Panda perform at the Black Cat. The two are very different - Voices of Black being a diverse quartet in terms of instruments and ethnicity, Gold Panda being a solitary Brit presiding over a high-tech musical machine. However, both prove themselves stylistically distinct and confident in the stage space - a winning combination that obviously pleased the sold-out crowd.Voices of Black took the stage first, bringing with them American flag bandanas, fedoras, cowbells, recorders, keyboards, saxophones and drums to [...]
Last night, Yo La Tengo performed at Portland's Wonder Ballroom. The trio did two sets, including one acoustic. Check out our photos of the show shot by Colin McLaughlin .

The Presets are performing at the Odgen Theater tomorrow co-headlining with Dragonette and openers Classixx. In all honesty, the three could be headlining the evening with strong new(ish) albums from both the Presets and SoCal's Classixx. The Presets' latest release, "Pacifica," has a tinge of Darren Emerson from Underworld sprinkled for good measure on Australia's best hope to follow in the footsteps of Cut Copy. "Pacifica" is a step in the right direction of using more instruments versus leaning too much on the electronic element with a more organic feel compared to previous efforts. Classixx's "Hanging Gardens" [...]

If there is one shared passion of the collected Thrash Hits writers (other than smugly mouthing-off about bands on the internet), then it's football. So when the London leg of Title Fight's UK tour clashed with the Europa League Final this week, we were worried we wouldn't be able to find anyone able to review it...so we guess it's a good job that Alex Andrews is a Spurs man... 6 things we learned watching Title Fight in London... [...]

by Tiana Feng Last night, Bravestation celebrated the release of their new EP IV at The Drake Hotel. If you haven't heard it yet, it is available for free on Bandcamp . Opening up the night was rapper TFHOUSE. Their recorded stuff (available on Bandcamp ) is alright, but I thought the live performance was a bit of a joke and kind of unprofessional. There was [...]

Lovelife live at Irving Plaza, 5.9.13. Photo Courtesy of Justin Bettman. I have a well documented love for Lovelife . My flirtation with their music started when I saw them open for The Neighbourhood at the Studio at Webster Hall last year. With every new release, I fell more in love with their anthemic pop songs mixed with R&B tinged pops of percussion. Emotive lyrics about exes, betrayal, realizations and renewal set to throbbing beats and lead singer Lee Newell' unfaltering falsetto pierce the ears with such effervescent ease, [...]
