I'm not sure when this was announced, but I just found out that two metal legends are once again headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink's Mayhem Tour this summer. Last time I went, it was Korn, Rob Zombie, and Lamb Of God. This year it's Slipknot and Slayer that have the double headlining gig. Mayhem will come to Camden's Susquehanna Bank Center on July 27th and also features Anthrax, As I Lay Dying, Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria, White Chapel, and High On Fire. Should be a brutal evening. Tickets go on sale April 6th.
Today I receive a gigantic slap in the face. I had this in my cue to watch on YouTube and I finally got around to watching this morning… and man oh man. Big Gigantic was playing just a few miles from my house last night, but tickets were sold out and after just hitting Datsik and gearing up for ASAP Rocky and Perrion tonight I opted to not go on the hunt tickets. I should kick my own ass. Big Gigantic releases a video showcasing their new light set up for 2012 and you can even see evidence of Dom [...]
After years of toiling in hardcore obscurity, definitive Bay Area " power violence " band Ceremony is on the cusp of international recognition and (relative) mainstream success. From their smashing debut—the appropriately titled Violence Violence , 13 songs in 13 minutes—through 2010s redefining Rohnert Park LP , Ceremony has been recognized for their decidedly artful approach to lo-fi brutality. Over the past 8 years, Ceremony have jumped from label to label, releasing 2 LPs and 4 EPs in the process. Now, after signing to indie powerhouse Matador , [...]

According to Forbes , the real winner of the Super Bowl this year was Indianapolis. Fortunately (and unfortunately at times) I was around the downtown area most of the week and it was one big zoo. Saw a few shows, ran into some pro athletes ( Jerome Bettis tapped me on the shoulder at a nightclub, no joke) and overall had a great time, but the real winner in my eyes was the free show UMPH put on the night before the Super Bowl. They brought the energy and even people who were waiting for O.A.R (yeah, them) [...]
Dropkick Murphys prove they are one of the best live bands at a Sold Out Vicar St. gig in Dublin. from http://www.withguitars.com/ Irish American band Dropkick Murphys are regular visitors to Ireland over the last number of years. Tonight's packed show was high on entertainment value, musicianship and surprisingly high on song quality as well. The best song [...]
The dress code Tuesday night at Lincoln Hall was glitter. Although I, and most of my fellow concert-goers, didn't get the memo until too late, each of the band members of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour rocked a glittery accoutrement: the horn section sported glittery bowties, the percussion section rocked a glitter lined denim jacket, the guitarist wore a glittery vest and the lead singer jammed in a glittery tunic and sparkly jeggings. The band shone. Literally and figuratively. It didn't hurt that the evening was peppered with unexpected and awesome instruments which included a saxophone, a [...]
michael lux and the bad sons Three reasons to leave the bros to their Thirsty Thursday rituals and head on over to Empty Bottle tonight... 1. Chicago's own Michael Lux and the Bad Sons are human time machines. Listening to a few simple chords, the alt-rockers conjure up the ghosts of alternative legends like The Replacements and Husker Du without coming off like desperate fan boys. Lux's low, scratchy howls are effortless and well-supported by distressed guitar and snappy backbeats. The set is sure to be a [...]
There's nothing that goes as well with a cold February Toronto night than reggae. Am I right or am I right. With that in mind, I recommend popping over to Lee's Palace tomorrow night to catch local reggae collective The House Of David Gang . Tomorrow is the kick off of their fifth annual celebration of all things Bob Marley . After that they take the show on the road. Doors open at 9:00pm. Cover is $15 or $10 with a canned food donation to the [...]
After seeing Theophilus London and opener Phony PPL perform on February 6th at the 9:30 Club I was just too overwhelmed by the high-energy fantasticness of the show to craft a coherent paragraph-style review. So here goes: my first (perhaps the world's first?) experiment with Concert Review Jeopardy. Alex Trebek, eat your heart out. Category: Apparel Seen on Stage at the show Correct Response: What are a vintage Stockholm Olympics sweater, a leopard-print bath robe, a "F*ck the Police" T-shirt, a gold-embroidered-elephant vest, argyle socks, and a New York Giants baseball cap? Remember when 5 Gum launched in South Africa last year , promising to stimulate our senses with world firsts that incorporated audio and visual awesomeness? Remember the two exclusive gigs featuring Etienne De Crecy and a campaign that saw people submitting customised, virtual building projections from all corners of the globe? Well now they have upped the ante and The kicked off the year in ultimate style with the next 5 Gum Experience, by bringing one of my favourites, Two Door Cinema Club, to the country for the first time. Yes, I'll let you absorb the full [...]
Metallica have seen better days. That's for sure. But their announcement today of a two day festival being held in Atlantic City this summer is pretty exciting stuff. The metal legends will headline both nights, June 23rd and 24th, at Bader Field in A.C. They have also hand selected the 22 bands that will play along side them for the festival. Metallica will be playing both Ride The Lightning and The Black Album in their entirety. I'd have rather heard ...And Justice For All [...]
I'm a big fan of this Cincinnati duo and their reel-to-reel tape player. Bad Veins are releasing The Mess We've Made on April 24th, their follow up to their frequently slept-on self-titled debut. The lead single is "Dancing On TV" and they premiered the accompanying visuals today. Hopefully an MP3 of this will get posted today also, because I don't really care for the video. Feels like they were going for the next "Buddy Holly" with this one. Bad Veins are playing Milkboy on April 13th in Philly . Looks like [...]

REVIEW: Paper Diamond @ Bottom Lounge, Chicago 1/27/12
In what some are calling it the best time in a long time for self-made DJs and producers, it's just too easy now to stand behind a laptop and let the music bring energy to a sold out crowd. Alex Botwin, AKA Paper Diamond proved that playing electronic music can and should be much more [...]

REVIEW / VIDEO: Reggie Watts @ The Mezzanine, SF 2/1/12
While it could be old news to other folks who've followed his work for years, last Wednesday night was my first exposure to the comedian / musician / actor known as Reggie Watts. As part of San Francisco's annual SketchFest, Reggie Watts was in town to do a Reggiedency, a four-night showcase spread between a [...]
