Headed down south to catch Florence + Machine and The XX live a week before Lunar New Year. I was very impressed by The XX's laidback and effortless performance. Many people may argue they lacked showmanship, but they made addictive music out of such bare melodies and simple instrumentation, which somehow made me wanted to hear more. "Less is more" is best to describe The XX! [...]

Heat was scorching on this summer day but it did not deter 40,000 punters from enjoying themselves in the Australia's biggest music festival, Big Day Out. The fantastic music lineups were enough to take the mind off all things skin-singeing. The first band I saw was Miami Horror at the Green Stage. It was the third time I've seen these guys and they managed [...]

Hearing all the fuzz about Southbound, it is foolish to even think of passing this annual arts, camping and music festival. Taking the advice of the co-writer, voluntary role it is. Work a couple hours as a wristbander and get free campsite and entry to the festival in exchange, sounds like a awesome deal to me. So off I go on a bus ride 3 hours south of Perth, where I spent a magnificent weekend of some good rock and roll and campin'. [...]

I was thrilled upon the gig annoucement of one of the most hyped band of 2009, Animal Collective at Capitol, Perth. Without hestitation, ticket was purchased and the night finally came after long wait of excitement. Support act Bachelorette warmed things up with her beautiful mass of layered loops and clever lyrics that leave the lasting impression this evening. The charm of Annabel Alpers is undeniable with her rather shy appearance and awkward chat. [...]

Patrick Wolf's gig was an absolutely amazing, full of utterly memorable moments, that was impossible not to enjoy. The crowd at Capitol that day wasn't the usual dumb blondes or fluoresecent disco kids. Glittered outfit, leather, eccentric bow ties, thick framed glasses, bold rouge lipstick and eye-liner was the attire on show – a scene that the headliner would definitely be proud of. We were treated to the spetacle of Wolf straight awat as there wasn't any opening act. Dressed in tight black pants, [...]

With an astounding line-ups of names like Empire of The Sun, Metronomy, MSTRKRFT, The Rapture, La Roux, Crystal Castles, Junior Boys and Erol Alkan, I did not hestitate to place Parklife as my first festival down under. The event was a sold-out, and fortunately I have purchased ticket long before I even set foot in Aussie. Weather was good, hitting 25 degrees in spring time, and the blaring sun did not deter the crowd from having fun and losing their minds in an awesome day of music. [...]

Two words to sum up the Wolfmother gig would be sweet and sweat. From the start it seemed like I was witnessing the birth of a new Rock God, and it really was at the end. Capitol was about half full and the bars were getting a workout when first supporting act Sydeny troubadour Jack Ladder strode onto the stage. Accompanied by Kirin J Callinan on guitar and a loop machine, Ladder displayed the richness of his sensually seductive vocal, performing a great mix of [...]

I have longed for a live gig here over in Perth and the day was finally here. They are Rockstars, at least according to one of their songs. Are they really? Death Disco warmed up the dancefloor with the familiar indie electronic action, robot rock and electro excess, a reminiscent of the good ol' TAG nights. After a fairly long wait, headliners Does It Offend You, Yeah? enter to a reception as feverish as their music. Everything from there on was spectacular from start to finish. [...]

On record, Ratatat 's unique brand of guitar based electronic synth fest is amazingly electrifying. After watching their live performance, they certainly lived up to that and did not disappoint. The show kicked off much later than it should be, typical local timing. Around half past 9, the lights dimmed and one word was emblazoned on the projector screen: RATATAT . The crowd response was deafening. Mike Stroud and Evan Mast wasted no time in getting the [...]

Another installment of Heineken Green Room has arrived, and VHS Or Beta was billed as the headliner. Other supporting acts include Djuma Soundsystem and local DJ Box Frenzy. Orange Club was the venue this time, fresh from the Battles gig a week ago. By the time VHS or Beta hit the stage, the club was brimming over with people, clinking beer bottles and roaring shouts of excitement. The minute-long "Euglama" was playing at the background, accompanying the band to [...]

After I witnessed the reverb brilliance of Battles in Big Day Out a year ago, me and the usual took no hesitation to lay our hands on the tickets to a rare outing by a math rock band in this part of the world. My energy was drained from working during first half of the day, but that doesn't deter me from getting hyped up for the inventive, genre-bending sound that Battles would bring on to the gig. The boys from Twilight Action Girl warmed up the crowd after the door was opened late almost to [...]

The last time Jens Lekman played at Little Havana was nearly two year ago, that little intimate gig was still fresh in my pathetically restricted memories of live acts that this deprived country could offer. The multi-talented Swedish singer-songwriter promised he would be back with a full band during his last bill here, but that promise was only half-realized this time around as he brought along his lanky protégé Viktor Sjöberg to provide catchy remix to his otherwise acoustic guitar-driven sweet pop tunes through the lovely Mac. The crowd was having small talk and catching up [...]

The night I had been looking forward to since a month ago. Thank god we arrived early to avoid getting stranded outside Zouk in the long queue and missing the beast of the night Van She . We even managed to ambush the quartet before the place is packed for a quick photo shoot and brief chat. A stage was set up at the dancefloor right in front of the deck for the live set. [...]
