If you're not feeling appropriately "Tuesday" yet, here's Bear Mountain 's track "Congo" from their new album XO . An infectious tune lathered with synthy chords, live instruments, syncopated bass lines and strong vocals. If that just scrapes the surface then go on and visit this page and listen to the other beat-upper "Two Step". The post Bear Mountain appeared first on Indie Music Filter .
THE energy of Jupiter & Okwess International is out of this world. On latest LP Hotel Univers the group kicks in with Bapesi, a funky, sped-up track which showcases a disco-meets-Afro-rock sound, and doesn't let up. As a result the former Damon Albarn-collaborating Congolese's fast-paced and jangly sound can be a bit cheesy at times, as a result, undermining any seriousness to subject matter. But it doesn't matter really, because you can almost hear the smiles on the faces of the people performing the tracks coming through your stereo - of you check into Hotel Univers, you'll [...]

What happens when you mix Congolese guitar, some bouncy hip-hop beats, and Bamboo 's smooth Swahili rapping? Why, Im glad you asked! You get a vitamin C-infused jam that will immediately make you wish you weren't at your computer reading a blog, but rather coasting along the beach on a bike or dancing on a humid night in a far away land. Bamboo is a Inglewood, CA native, who after getting in trouble a lot as a kid, was sent to Kenya by his parents where he learned to speak Swahili. He decided to [...]

A song that can make you move has most likely done its job to the fullest! Music is the manipulation of sound waves that in turn can manipulate us to do basically anything, it, or the mad sonic scientist behind it, wishes us to. When we here strong percussions like the ones found here on Bear Mountain 's " Congo" , depending on where we are from, we can easily relate them to past sounds we have heard. For some of us, these sounds might remind us of our childhoods, our cultures, a movie we once loved, [...]

Last September I did a feature on Beat Making Lab in the Congo. The whole project was brought to life by DJ Apple Juice Kid and Pierce Freelon of The Beast who traveled to the Congo to set up a music studio and teach some select students how to use the equipment and make beats. The duo has sense set up other Beat Making Lab's around the world and have teamed up with PBS for this digital series. Above is episode 1 featuring the Congo. Below, is the first music video released featuring the students of the Congo, [...]

by Andrew Sacher Sun Araw at BV-SXSW 2012 ( more by Nate "Igor" Smith ) Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras took part in one of 2012's most interesting (relatively) obscure releases with Icon Give Thank , a collaborative album with reggae legends/Lee "Scratch" Perry associates The Congos . And towards the end of the year, the three collaborators released a 5-track live EP recorded [...]

Last Christmas, The FADER sent Jace Clayton down to St. Katherine, Jamaica to watch Sun Araw and his friend M. Geddes Gengras lay down some tunes with legendary reggae band The Congos. Icon Give Thank, ... read more

Tom Schnabel Gustavo Dudamel came into Venezuela's Simon Bolivar Orchestra as a young kid from Caracas' streets; the rest is history. "The Dude", now the dynamic young music director of the LA Philharmonic, has brought the world's attention to the amazing Venezuelan music education system-called El Sistema-designed to get kids off the streets and into classical music. See this earlier RP post ( http://blogs.kcrw.com/rhythmpl anet/gustavo-dudamel-el-sistem a-and-how-music-can-change-liv es/ ). Recently I've learned of two other orchestras that have survived despite all possible odds, and playing Western [...]

Today's Song of the Day comes from Vancouver's electronic band Bear Mountain. This trio, comprised of Ian Bevis, Kyle Statham, and Kenji Rodriguez got together in 2011, and their latest release, XO , came out this August. Change up your Saturday night playlist a bit with "Congo," which perfectly captures their ability to blend indie and pop in a fun electro/dance style. Look for the track after the jump! Congo by Bear Mountain -Tess O'Connor, host of Tunes With Tess , [...]

Solange (Knowles, yes, that one) has returned with a perfectly delightful track, but I'm absolutely fascinated with the utterly fabulous gents in the video. A little research shows that I'm not the only one. The members of the Society of Atmosphere Setters and Elegant People are properly worthy of one's attention. I used my chance to review Solange's track for Dallas-based Groove Loves Melody as an excuse to delve a bit deeper into this bizarre-yet-immaculate phenomenon. Filmed in South [...]

Staff Benda Bilili eclipse just being a great story; they make some pretty damn good music. The core of the band is four paraplegics who had polio when they were younger, leaving them without the use of their legs (check out their great public service announcement to remind parents to get their kids vaccinated against the disease here ). Tired of being rejected by other bands in Kinshasa, the members joined forces, practicing and living in the city zoo while working as street performers across the sprawling Congolese capital. You can't make this stuff up. Discovered by a Belgian [...]

DJ Apple Juice Kid and Pierce Freelon of The Beast, have put together a program called Beat Making Lab. It's a course offered at UNC-Chapel Hill. I wish my university offered a program like that, I just went for a joke of a film and television degree. Anyway, the two recently traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo where they taught some select musicians from the area how to make beats. I never thought I'd find myself saying this, but I'm pretty jealous of some kids in the Congo right now. More info below. In July [...]

F3 are three brothers from the same mother and they like disco! At least that's how F3 describe themselves. The trio just released an EP on Silhouette Music entitled "Congo Bongo" and it's all about warm synths, hot percussion and high male vocals. The release includes 3 remixes from Marbeya Sound, Stern and Silenx. Listen to the original version + one of the mixes or stream the whole EP on SoundCloud.
In the context of the culinary world, sofrito is a mix of several spicy, flavorful elements, and the Sofrito that's become inseparable from DJ culture isn't too far afield from that description. Masterful mixmeisters/killer crate-diggers Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis have been laying down an eclectic array of beats under the Sofrito banner for a [...]
