Kriget – “Holy Mountain” Video

Kriget – “Holy Mountain” Video Earlier this week Sweden's rising experimental trio Kriget unveiled the disturbing music video for "Holy Mountain" on the FADER . With just bass, drums and a furious saxophone the Swedish avant garde combo, made up of Christoffer Roth, Gustav Bendt and Per Nordmark, take inspiration from pioneers in the margins of pop. The video, directed by Fredrik Joeison , portrays "A time honoured ritual celebrating and appeasing the approaching dark season [in it] a nuclear family introduce their Alpha male to the secret meaning of the five elements." El Perro Del Mar: Pale Fire

El Perro Del Mar: Pale Fire Pale Fire , the fourth record from El Perro Del Mar, aka Sarah Assbring, confidently abandons the modern soundscapes - instead finding a solace in the electronic sounds of yesteryear. The atmosphere resides amidst the 80s and 90s – the rolling pianos that groove alongside the drum-machinery, the synth pads that breathe ethereal notes, and the mid-paced breakbeats that Dub-International would have died for (check lead single Walk on By ) It makes for pop-friendly experience with a mellowed undertow. Del Mar’s melodies are strong yet understated – she can repeat the hook over and over and [...]

Song : El Perro Del Mar : “Hold Off the Dawn” El Perro Del Mar released the second single, "Hold Off the Dawn," off her new LP Pale Fire slated for release on November 13th via The Control Group . The dreamy, upbeat track showcases the pop sensibilities of the project. Sarah Assbring says of the track: "In this world, you think you have no reason to believe in love or in anything much. Then one day, when you least expect it, a light appears on the far horizon. It's a flickering light, begging [...]

Nouela: Chants

Nouela: Chants Being the daughter of two music professors may explain the more classical shades residing within Seattle-based Nouela's debut. An album that shares much with Fiona Apple's brand of power and pop delivered via a piano and lively drumkit. These songs are pretty on the outside, but scratch some more and you'll find that many are born from emotional turmoil, crushed love and harsh experience. Nouela started life in Korea (her parents are Norwegian and Korean) - moving to the US at the age of eleven. She learnt every instrument she could lay her hands on, and [...]

Video: The Deer Tracks - "Meant To Be"

Video: The Deer Tracks - "Meant To Be" The Deer Tracks have been busy at creating an album trilogy known as The Archer Trilogy . Released in three parts with the third and final coming later this fall via The Control Group, the core duo of David Lehnberg & Elin Lindfors have released a new video for "Meant To Be" from last year's The Archer Trilogy Pt 2 . Deer Tracks said the following about the video, "...The Deer Tracks play on an already obvious difference in appearance as they are shot individually with their instruments, visually relaying the strange juxtaposition of singer Elin [...]

CATE LE BON: CYRK

CATE LE BON: CYRK On her second album, Cate Le Bon mines various points of the 60s – from the Velvet Underground’s strumming electrics to Pentangle’s electric folk. It’s all in search of a new form of kooky pop Le Bon is intent on creating. On this record however the results are hit and miss. Half the time she succeeds, like on the excellent Puts Me to Work , which tumbles along on a piano and strummed electric. Half the time she struggles – as on opener Falcon Eyed , which bounds along with a psyched-out garage spirit, but remains [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: “The Archer Trilogy Pt. 2″ by The Deer Tracks

Part twos never really have that special sauce but maybe The Deer Tracks' The Archer Trilogy Pt. 2 have changed our minds.

The Deer Tracks – The Archer Trilogy Pt. 2

The Deer Tracks – The Archer Trilogy Pt. 2 You can’t argue with The Deer Tracks when they describe their recording process: “If you lock yourself up in a cabin in the woods, things start to happen. You’ll start to find your way back to your inner core, back to life”. It’s true, the Swedish duo indeed possess a certain purity in their electronic pop – it can feel almost disconnected from everyday life. And when they back it up with a beautiful melody or memorable hook it forms a glacial beauty which just can’t be created by electronic machinery alone. Unfortunately the songs on the [...]

Virgin Islands: No Doctor [Video]

Virgin Islands: No Doctor [Video] For fans of The Thermals' early stuff and Unnatural Helpers, fellow Pacific Northwesters Virgin Islands are sure to appease. The band recently debuted a video for "No Doctor" off their debut LP. It features singer/guitarist Michael Jaworski (The Cops) on a gurney rolling through the streets of Seattle. In it he screams Don't call the doctor / Don't call an ambulance , which fits the song nicely. Ironically, then, he was injured in the last shot of the film and the lyrics became moot as he took a trip to [...]

Virgin Islands: No Doctor [mp3]

Virgin Islands: No Doctor [mp3] In the fall of 2009, Seattle punk band Virgin Islands gave us their debut EP after only a short time of existence. That EP, despite only containing four tracks, demonstrated the type of skill and songwriting prowess one could expect from a seasoned band with years under their belt. So it's with great anticipation that we receive "No Doctor", a track off Virgin Islands' new album Ernie Chambers Vs. God . And sure enough, we're instantly treated with those same heavy guitar riffs [...]

The Daily Choice: Virgin Islands - No Doctor

In the days of yore, when I still called myself a Seattlite, it was a rare time when I missed out on any show Michael Jaworski's former band The Cops put on.  I burned out MP3 players blasting through their albums, and very strongly, and I imagine annoyingly, pushed them upon anyone who'd give me [...]

Figurines: Hanging From Above [Video]

Figurines: Hanging From Above [Video] To be honest, I haven't spent much time with Figurines' previous work. Though I've been told a few times I would really enjoy it. So when I saw a note in my inbox that they've got a new one on the way and that this here video had been released, I figured it was time I dig in and check them out. And whoever told me I would enjoy this band was spot on - "Hanging From Above" is a phenomenal song! The video for "Hanging From Above" is [...]

Figurines - s/t (Morningside Records/The Control Group)

As with "When the deer wore blue" , the dreamy echoes of '60s pop continue on through Figurines ' self-titled release, coloring the album in nostalgic, sun-bleached tones and textures and casting strange shadows across their music. As fans of the band have come to expect, the swells of the compositions, both with respect to instrumentation and emotion, are layered and intricate, but not inaccessible or pretentious. The bright, clean production is subtly subverted by pop songs that are not reliant on guitar or vocal hooks, and tracks that evoke a summery feel often turn from the sun [...]

New Music From The Figurines

New Music From The Figurines This feel good tune by The Figurines called "New Colors" has managed to brighten up what was an otherwise gloomy day.  The catchy track is set to appear on the upcoming self-titled LP from the band due out April 12th via Control Group .  Prior to that date, you can actually stream the entire new album on the Figurine's bandcamp page as the joint was already released in Denmark.  I think I've found my dance hall hit of the spring. People Eating People Debut First Video: “Rain Rain”

People Eating People - "Rain Rain" The Control Group
Unlike the disappointed YouTube commenters who were hoping for something more screamo because of the band's cannibalistic name, I'm a fan of People Eating People's first video for "Rain Rain." The video finds colorful construction paper cut-outs of the band practicing, biking, getting struck by lightning and going on a Mary Poppins-esque journey through the [...]
