My top ten for the year, with a brief explanation/comment. Enjoy & Happy New Year! ...... 1. Grizzly Bear – Shields The guys in Grizzly Bear killing it, once again. This record is almost perfect. The compositions are strange & beautiful, and they complement the haunting singing styles of Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen. If you didn’t get this album – you missed (but there's still time!). Check Out: Yet Again [mp3] [...]

This year was much more of a songs year for us... probably having more to do with our listening habits than any lack of noteworthy albums (there are plenty) or any ominous "death of the album" that's been prophesied for at least a half decade now. Nope... We're just a songs blog, by and large. We listen almost exclusively to songs from new bands we're considering writing about. So hopefully this list will open your ears to some great songs you may have missed and reinforce the awesomeness of the ones you already know and love: [...]

The CMJ Festival was a few weeks ago, but I think that I am still recovering from running around Manhattan for five days of nonstop music. I may be weak, but I know that the CMJ Festival is still completely overwhelming. Over the course of the festival, there are over 1500 showcases at more than 80 venues across the city. After scouring the band list, I had finally come up with some kind of schedule for myself, but the magnitude of the festival of course meant that I would be missing so much. Over the course of the [...]
Award-winning performances all around presented by Owls truly.

I had no problems with how CMJ 2012 was run - the people who throw the festival are always top notch. There was, however, one thing that aggravated me about the festival: the majority of bands seemed satisfied with being "good." I've never seen such low levels of artistic ambition. What was equally shocking was how "good" bands would be praised by sub sections of the crowd as "the next big thing," with people rushing to proclaim that an act "killed it," or that they "won CMJ 2012." After 80+ bands over the long week, I [...]
Now until Oct 20th, hundreds of bands and music fans will take over New York City for the annual CMJ Music Marathon . While CMJ may lack the "big names" you find at Coachella and Lollapalooza , it totally makes up for it with shear volume. There are soooo many bands and artists playing, it's actually a bit nerve wrecking, trying to decide which acts to see. But what really makes CMJ rad, is the music [...]

NINETEEN acts! So enough chit-chat, let's get to the list, because that is sure going to take up enough space. [...]
