You probably haven't been following it, what with the debt ceiling and everything else going on, but there's a minor war a-brewing in the U.K. over the future of their copyright laws, as the houses of government consider the best way to protect copyrighted material in the 21st century. The big news out of the rewriting of copyright laws over there is that the government has decided against blocking file-sharing websites, instead trying to figure out a way to take down those kind of websites if they break copyright laws. This story could [...]

It's not always a glamorous life in the music industry. In fact, it rarely is -- because, like any other industry, it's closely tied with many legal practices and issues. During yesterday's dayti... From Comics Alliance: "You're not losing sales by getting stuff out there. When I do a big talk now on these kinds of subjects and people ask "What about the sales you are losing by having stuff floating out there?" I started asking the audience to raise their hands for one question — Do you have a favorite author? And they say yes and I say good. What I want is for everybody who discovered their favorite author by being lent a book put up your hand. Then anybody who discovered their favorite [...]

I have been on a remixing !KICK!! lately. Desperate to find a new project, I remembered that Trent Reznor had put up stems of a bunch of his tracks for users to remix and upload back to the site. It's remix.nin.com if you are interested. I decided to start a remix using Capital G and the beats from a Birdman track called Money To Blow. I think it turned out ok: Nine Inch Nails - Capital Geezy (Jaizer Got Money To Blow Remix) [...]
A Swedish court today found four people behind the popular BitTorrent hub the Pirate Bay guilty of violating copyright law . Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundstrom were sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay $3.6 million in damages. An appeal is expected, obviously. And for those downloading conscious, the site will remain active through the appeals process. Best to start downing free drinks until the open closes soon.
The University of Oregon in Portland is showing a free screening of the documentary 'Copyright Criminals' and I have been invited to interview the director afterwards. The documentary takes a look at the many hurdles that hip hop artists, DJs and producers have to overcome to use samples of other peoples work in their ostensibly [...]

Thanks to the efforts of JC from The Vinyl Villain and the cooperation from Paul Haig and his management, April 6 is Paul Haig Day in select parts of the blogosphere. There are over 20 of us across the world dedicating a post today to Paul Haig after the kerfuffle and hullabaloo over Blogger takedowns despite artist permission, Haig being one of the consenting, and publicity-deserving, artists, and JC being the one targetted by Blogger copyright Nazis. If you want a history of the man's career, pop over to The Vinyl Villain , where JC lays it out quite [...]

Well, after 15 months of no hassle, I've received my first DMCA takedown notice from Blogger. Of course, the offending post has already been taken down by Blogger, so it's more of a notice to tell you it's gone rather than a notice to tell you to take it down. The post that was deleted was a weekly mix from last August, long dead links and all. Even more bizarrely, this mix featured only cover versions and many of them were by artists that I've featured several times over. I know this because I took precautions several months ago and [...]
So, it's October 6. Last day in the State of Texas to register to vote for next month's presidential election. Hope you remembered. If not, you're a pretty detestable American. That, and you probably won't appreciate the above video at all . It's called "Obamarama," and it comes from a collective of area musicians ( Bucks Burnett , Salim Nourallah , Rip Rowan ) calling themselves The DemoCats . "The song is primarily a hard rock number that is 100% pro-Obama," writes Burnett in a press release accompanying the [...]
