Brooklyn's ethereal R&B artist Tom Krell (aka How To Dress Well ) has recorded a cover of Xiu Xiu's "Clowne Towne" (from their 2004 LP Fabulous Muscles ). This reworked version focuses solely on Krell's voice, which shifts back and forth between squeaky and emotional and low and brooding. Stream it below (via FACT ). " Fabulous Muscles is one of my all-time fave records, and 'Clowne Towne' is definitely in my top 10 all-time songs," Krell told FACT . "I love the musical composition so much, but I'm especially attracted [...]
Oupa , AKA Yuck frontman Daniel Blumberg, recently teamed with Lambchop pianist Tony Crow for a stripped-down cover of Porcelain Raft's "Backwords" . Stream it below. Recorded at Mark Nevers' Beech House Studios in Nashville, the track will also be released as a limited-edition 73 vinyl on March 12th. Click here to pre-order your copy.
Neil Young's On The Beach was originally released in 1974 as the follow up to the commercially and critically successful Harvest . It was raw and loose, and from the lyrics and sparse production, it's clear that Young was in an emotionally dark place at the time. For a modern equivalent, you could compare it's emotional bleakness to Kanye West's 808 & Heartbreaks , except that where 808s was overproduced with autotune, On The Beach was underproduced (also: On The Beach is just a better record). We find Young here [...]
So in addition to Vimeo's still ongoing "Old Ideas With New Friends" series , which has already seen Bradford Cox , Cold War Kids , Cults , and The Afghan Whig's Greg Dulli cover tracks from the great Leonard Cohen, there's also a covers album of Cohen's 1967 debut that comes included in the new issue of MOJO magazine. Contributing artists included Bill Callahan, Cass McCombs, The Low Anthem, Field Music, and ex-Fleet Fox'er Father John Misty , as well as Marc Ribot and My Brighest Diamond, who teamed up for a bonus track version of "Bird on [...]
Photo by Meghan Brosnan As reported, Columbia Records is marking the release of Leonard Cohen's first album in eight years, Old Ideas , with a cover series called "Old Ideas With New Friends". We've already heard reworkings of the legendary songwriter's catalog by Cold War Kids , Cults , and The Afghan Whig's Greg Dulli . Now, Pitchfork brings us Bradford Cox's acoustic take on "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy". Watch it here . In more Bradford Cox news, Deerhunter's contribution to the Japan benefit [...]
Elliott Smith wrote some of the prettiest pop songs ever written. Of course, writing a pretty pop song isn't the same thing as writing an upbeat pop song. "Between the Bars" is a perfect example. The melody is touchingly beautiful and unthreateningly gentle. The lyrics, however, are undeniably troubled. Although the song could double as an unorthodox love song (a popular interpretation of the track), the most likely read is that it's about the threat of impending alcoholism. As the track opens, Smith sings ruefully about "the potential you'll be, but you'll never see / the promises you'll only make." [...]
As previously reported, D'Angelo has returned to the stage following a decade-long hiatus with a series of European tour dates. Along with a pair of new tunes , the neo-soul crooner has included a cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" in his set, as DDotOmen points out. Taking to the acoustic guitar, D'Angelo injects a sultry shot of R&B into the classic, all while keeping intact its strange, spacey vibe (guess that sort of makes him two for two in the covers department). Watch the replay below.
Photo by Meghan Brosnan Last night, Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth ) appeared on the Swedish TV show På Spåret , as TwentyFourBit points out. Backed by a full band, Matsson performed two songs: the Swedish folk tune "En Fattig Trubadur" and a Swedish-language cover of Thin Lizzy's classic "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight)". Thanks to the supporting musicians, Matsson's rendition of "Dancing" showed off a more lush, intricate sound, one that was as recklessly rocking as it was folksy and insightful. Watch the full performance here [...]
In honor of Leonard Cohen's upcoming album Old Ideas , his first in eight years, Columbia Records has teamed up with a group of musicians/Cohen devotees for a cover series, entitled Old Ideas With New Friends . We've already witnessed Greg Dulli's somber cover of "Paper Thin Hotel" , and Filter now brings us a rendition of "There Is a War" by Long Beach soul-rock purveyors Cold War Kids . In explaining their choice of songs, guitarist/vocalist Nathan Willett said the song's message was powerfully effective, adding, "it's a song that talks about inner struggle, a [...]
Photo by Catherine Watkins Aside from collaborating with everyone on god's green earth, The Flaming Lips' other current fascination appears to be covering The Beatles. We've already witnessed Wayne Coyne and co's tripped out version of "I Am The Walrus" , and now Hidden Track points us to pro-shot footage of the band's recent New Year's Eve show in Oklahoma City, where they teamed up with Wilco's Nels Cline for a 17-minute rendition of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Watch it below. In other [...]
On January 31st, Leonard Cohen will release Old Ideas , his first studio album in eight years. In honor of his return to the spotlight, Rolling Stone is holding a cover series called Old Ideas With New Friends , where various musicians and devotees rework classic tracks from Cohen's catalog. Kicking off the series is Afghan Whigs head honcho Greg Dulli 's cover of "Paper Thin Hotel" (from 19772s Death of a Ladies' Man ). In explaining his decision to tackle this [...]
Here's a thing. In the post-Winehouse search for gin-u-wine authentic blue eyed soul, any pretty young thing with a gritty voice and a decent set of breasts found themselves in a dusty, analogue recording studio listening carefully to whatever it was that the svengali their record company had plucked from indieland's dole queue was telling them to do. Leader of the pack was Duffy; 602s-steeped, Dusty-voiced (kinda) and produced by former hip young gunslinger Bernard Butler. Mercy , with its snapping snare and northern soul Perry boys in the video was, I'm not ashamed to say , a real [...]
Though you may not think it at first, seventies jazz-rock pioneers Steely Dan are probably one of the hardest bands out there to cover. How difficult it is to do justice to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's zealous studio perfectionism and heavily layered sinister undertones. Yet that didn't stop Toronto prog-rockers The Darcys from deciding to try and reinterpret the entirety of Steely Dan's seminal 1977 album, Aja . As we noted in yesterdays review of AJA , The Darcys "sonically unearth Steely Dan's buried lyrical darkness" with their meticulously tuned noise that [...]
The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" is probably one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Anyways, it is certainly one of the best rock tracks ever fused with another genre (considering it is maybe more reggae that rock). I love the way it just oozes defiance, rebellion and urban menace. The three covers I collected here are all pretty unique and really shine a light on different aspects of the source material. It's also just really interesting to see what the covering bands took from the original and what they discarded. Arcade Fire's live version pretty much strips the reggae [...]
