The stars in the celestial sphere have aligned if only for a moment to form an indie dream trio, with the Sisters Crutchfield (of Swearin' and Waxahatchee ) covering the preeminent future-pop queen Grimes . Their version of "Oblivion" uses garage rock silly putty to pull the tune right off Grimes' funny pages, and while it's a little more rough-edged than Claire Boucher's original, it picks up all of the specifics that made the original one of our favorites of 2012. So the new Primal Scream album's here and before a note had been heard, the knives in this house were already being sharpened. From the rubbish cover that looks as if the work experience boy was given a generic shot of Bobby and 10 minutes with a laptop, to the list of cliches masquerading as song titles on the back - River Of Pain, Culturecide, Tenement Kid, Invisible City, Goodbye Johnny, Elimination Blues - I had this album down as a stinker, another one of those disappointing albums the Scream have been turning out with increasingly [...]
The Lab TV recently brought together two singer-songwriters from opposite sides of the globe, London's Laura Marling and Los Angeles' Eddie Berman , and squared them away inside a California recording studio to let them do their proverbial musical thing. Accompanied by little more than an acoustic guitar, the two performed their own rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" effectively turning the 1984 powerhouse rock hit into a soft-spoken, soul-soother. Watch the session below. If you want more of Ms. Marling, look out for her upcoming album, [...]
The Great Pyramid of Giza. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The Colossus of Rhodes. The Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Seven Wonders of the World . You'd think that by now, the 21st Century, someone somewhere might fancy updating that list. I think I missed the appeal when they were asking folk to write in with their suggestions for the 8th wonder, but if it's not too late, I'm putting forward the Glasgow Barrowlands for inclusion. True Blood' s not all dramatic pale tales of vampire love — its well-curated, guest-heavy soundtracks also seem to feed the musically thirsty. In the past, the show's music supervisor Gary Calamar, who also works as a KCRW DJ, has brought together Nick Cave and Neko Case , Iggy Pop and Bethany Cosentino , and now, for the upcoming volume, Eric Burdon and Jenny Lewis . Together, they duet on "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", a song recorded by Burdon and The Animals in 1965. Listen to their cover via KCRW . [...]
On July 16th, Los Angeles composer Chris Schlarb will deliver his third solo album, Psychic Temple II , on Asthmatic Kitty. The follow-up to 20102s Psychic Temple includes his cover of the Beach Boys' 1971 Surf's Up track "'Til I Die", where he's joined by an eclectic cast of musicians: Sufjan Stevens , Castanets' Ray Raposa, and Cryptacize' s Nedelle Torrisi on vocals, and the Mars Volta' s Ikey Owens on the organ. Listen to the warbling rendition below.
Girl Crisis is an all-female, Brooklyn supergroup comprised of Chairlift' s Caroline Polachek, Au Revoir Simone' s Erika Spring, Class Actress' Elizabeth Harper, TEEN' s Jane Herships, and many other talented ladies from around the New York City borough. The collective are in the business of issuing two covers each year via YouTube (in 8MM-film, as is the tradition), taking on male songs in the summer and female ones in the spring. In the past, they've tackled hits by Nirvana, Black Sabbath, and Taylor Dayne. Here's their latest offering, star-studded bunch cover The Bangles' [...]
(Subtitled What Is This Shit? ) It was those opening words of his review that got Greil Marcus fired from Rolling Stone magazine in 1970 following his slaying of Bob Dylan's Self Portrait. A hotchpotch of bewildering cover versions, syrupy reworkings of his own back catalogue and bizarre odds 'n sodds so far removed from the Bob of 2/3/4 years earlier as to place the 1970s Bob firmly in the 'has-been' category, we can, with the benefit of hindsight apprecaite Marcus' review for what it really was - a [...]

Earlier this year, Outkast had themselves a sorta kinda but not really reunion , and while it didn't go beyond that sole Frank Ocean track, it clearly re-sparked people's interest in the ATLiens. STS9 put their jam band spin on "SpottieOttieDopaliscious" , Ryan Hemsworth chopped and screwed "Return of the G" , and now Tame Impala have returned home to Australia to cover "Prototype" for Triple J's coveted "Like A Version." Apparently one of their "favorite songs ever," the band take the Speakerboxxx/The Love Below deep cut from a funky [...]

Emeli Sandé and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra' s brassy rendition of Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love" is the latest track to surface off the star-studded soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby . On this cover, Ferry has ditched the glam and waxed nostalgic for Mos Eisley's Cantina Band, providing just the right dusty pizzaz for Sandé to do her Queen Bey best. Check it out below. The cover appears alongside Beyoncé and André 30002s re-imagining of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" , in [...]
When I first picked up the plank of wood I had the cheek to call a guitar, I hadn't yet mastered changing from a D to an A and back again before I realised something was missing. I needed something, anything, to disguise the bum notes from the badly-played chords I was trying to strangle out of my instrument at parent-bothering volume through my wee practice amp. That something was the fuzzbox. What a revelation! I could play along to most of The Buzzcocks ' What Do I Get and mangle a passable version of Everybody's [...]
Last month, London folk rock trio Daughter hit up the BBC Radio One Live Lounge to deliver a tender mash-up of Bon Iver’s "Perth" and Hot Chip’s "Ready For The Floor" . Earlier this weekend, the group returned to the lounge for another "waaay out of left field" cover: Daft Punk' s comeback single "Get Lucky" . In the trio's folky hands, the disco jam turns into a brooding lament, with the slow wail of guitars and frontwoman Elena Tonra's scorn-filled vocals adding layers of subtext to the free-and-easy lyrical content. Listen in below (via [...]
Jessie Ware' s already put her smooth, neo-soul spin on Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" and Brownstone's "Say It" , and now here, the UK songstress takes on Martika's 1991 pop hit "Love…Thy Will Be Done." Co-written by Prince (yes!), the cool, effortless charm and sentiment of the original fits Ware's style to a T. Listen to it below.
Jack White made the most of his tenure as Record Store Day Ambassador with the reissue of The White Stripes' Elephant and the construction of the "one-of-a-kind" Third Man Recording Booth . Neil Young (!) was among the many who spent time in the booth on Record Store Day , but for now we'll have to make due with what Jack himself recorded: a cover of Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner's Daughter". Take a listen below.

In the name of Leo, Beyoncé and André 3000 linked up to cover Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black”, and tonight Mark Ronson premiered the result of their efforts during his East Village Radio program (fun fact: Ronson co-wrote the song with Winehouse). It's an intriguing take on the sultry number, featuring a soft pulse of dub underneath the syrupy sing-talk of André and breathy croon ala Marilyn Monroe/Betty Boop from Queen B. Listen to a tagged radio rip below (via Miss Info ). The cover appears on the soundtrack [...]
