Say what you will about the effects of social media proliferation, it sure saved the day (or night rather) this past Thursday when it was suddenly broadcasted through Twitter and Facebook that Santos Party House, the original venue for the Ninja Tune XX party, had been shut down. As we are not privy to the inner workings of the minds over at MeanRed, we can only imagine the panic that must have ensued as a replacement space had to be found, new deals brokered, and information distributed to the masses, STAT. But hey, this is New York City, and we [...]
One of my favorite Brooklyn bands, Gunfight!, recently released an album called Frontier Land. If you've had the pleasure of seeing these guys live then you'll recognize most of the songs on the album. The recording does a pretty good job of capturing the essence of their live shows. Considering they're one of the absolute best live bands in Brooklyn that's a good thing. If you want to check

Dun dun dun. Exit Clov sent us over two tracks from their new CD, Memento Mori , for your free consumption. But here's the deal: I put in a special code so that you can't download them unless you purchase tickets to go to one of their two concerts this weekend in DC (or the free one next weekend in NYC and another, not free, in Philly). So, yeah, the files are completely non-show-goer proof!* Jamie and I will be hitting up their show at IOTA on Saturday night, so if any of [...]

My first CMJ Music Marathon was a fun-tastic one. Most of my CMJ-ing was done @ Pianos, a great little venue on historic Ludlow St. I've discovered at least half a dozen promising new bands (Seven Saturdays, Warpaint, Deastro, Peggy Sue, Jeff The Brotherhood , Hurricane Bells, Pete & The Pirates, Choir Of Young Believers) which will [...]
I'd managed to avoid Crash Mansion completely in my years of NYC showgoing, but Tuesday night ended my streak as I headed over to its hallowed halls in search of the Whitesmith Entertainment / CASH Music CMJ Party , happily stuffed with pumpkin schnapps, steak and potatoes. No kidding. I <3 U, Limewire. Let me tell you, it sure dulled the pain of $8 Brooklyn Lagers. Eff you, Crash Mansion. ANYWAY, I arrived to find a lone Demander , guitarist Dave Kurutz, when his bandmates suddenly appeared and [...]
Yesterday Gunfight played Littlefield for After The Jump Fest. They were awesome as always. Unfortunately it was pretty early when they played so the crowd wasn't jumping around like they normally do at Gunfight shows. On that note I wanted to share some video from the time they played the Brooklyn Ski Club curated show at Crash Mansion earlier this month. This band has quickly become one of my

Brooklyn's The States are playing a show tonight at Crash Mansion with Exit Clov (from DC), Hailey Wojcik (CD release party) and Black Taxi . The States are releasing their new EP "We Are Erasers" on Sept. 22nd and the band describes their music as " Radiohead-like dreamscapes, Zeppelin-inspired bombast, and an Orwellian political sensibility...often in the same song ". The States go on at 11PM but get to the club early -- every Friday night, Crash Mansion starts the evening with an open bar. [...]
A few weeks ago Jeremy form NY Underbelly asked me if I'd be down to curate one of his Friday night parties at Crash Mansion. I was a little hesitant because there wasn't much time and I was already having trouble getting bands for another show (which we eventually canceled). So I put the word out that I needed bands and to my surprise we managed to get a pretty excellent lineup together.I've
I just wanted to let you all know about the next couple of Brooklyn Ski Club shows. The first is at Crash Mansion this Friday. It's a NY Underbelly show that BSC curated. The lineup is pretty awesome, if I do say so myself - Young Lords, Hank & Cupcakes, Gunfight, and Cinema Cinema! Yeah, that's for reals yo. I'm going to probably get some killer DJ added to keep you dancing between bands. The
New York's Pet Ghost Project is about to self-release The Wordless Conversation , a primarily instrumental montage of Animal Collective/Built To Spill/Brian Wilson-esque tracks. This album will be out just days after the release of Pet Ghost Project 's EP Idiot Brain/Genius Heart . Wondering why they didn't just combine the two? Listen to some of the EP tracks at myspace.com/PetGhostProject and you'll hear why. To sum it up: The Wordless Conversation is a rich flurry of epic instrumental works while Idiot Brain/Genius Heart is a frolicking art-pop collection. [...]

We were at the release show for Spanish Prisoners ' new EP, Los Angeles Guitar Dream ( our review here ), on Saturday. It was our first time seeing front-man Leo Maymind play with a full band, which we enjoyed. While listening, it occurred to us that, live, there are casual hints of Neil Young and Crazy Horse to their sound. Also, as we readied the photos below for posting, we had the band's 2007 full-length, Songs To Forget , playing and suddenly got the feeling that there's perhaps a bit of a Harry Nilsson influence [...]
Last night marked the record release party for the (brilliant) new EP from Spanish Prisoners: Los Angeles Guitar Dream. The short-player is available for free via Bandcamp and includes some of Brooklyn based band's strongest tracks to date. A sort of hybrid between Last Shadow Puppets, Grandaddy & Lifted era Bright Eyes, Spanish Prisoners are [...]
If you haven't given the So So Glos a listen yet then do yourself a favor and click here. They're fucking awesome! Imagine if the Clash was born thirty years later and came out now with all the influences of the 90's and 00's incorporated into their music. That's kinda what So So Glos sound like. If you can't make it out tonight then I highly recommend checking them out at Castle In Hell

Seems there's been a relative lack of music on here lately, so I figured I make my increasingly rare presence known once again by alerting you the reader to quite possibly the best young band in New York City. The Dig are the kind of band where, if you have been living in New York thinking "Gee, I live in one of the global epicenters for up-and-coming music. I should get out more and see some music the world at large may not yet be aware of...", it would be highly advisable that you see their [...]
