Compared with mp3s, it takes us much longer to get around to listening to all the tracks we get sent that are for streaming only - annoyingly paid work has to take priority during the day and you can't stick these on an iPod - however, there have been a selection of corking tunes released recently that are well worth some of your ear time and maybe even paying for a download or two.... First up is the latest track from the Hold Steady front man Craig Finn's solo album Clear Heart Full [...]
By now, you've undoubtedly heard about the Save Criminal Records campaign. It had a November deadline for fundraising. There have been countless concerts and rallies to help save Atlanta's biggest record store and their efforts have made a difference. The store's here to stay (for now). Saving them from immediate closure was one step, but [...]

It's a sad time for independent record stores right now. After closing the last three days with no explanation, Louisville's Ear X-Tacy announced that the doors would be permanently shut . That's not just a blow to Louisville, either. We're talking about one of the top 10 indie stores in the nation. Ear X-Tacy was a leader in the industry for a long time and helped champion the Coalition for Independent Music Stores . Similarly, Criminal Records was instrumental in creating the Alliance of Independent Media Stores , along with a [...]
A great line-up from Athens and Atlanta in support of our own legendary record store (and comic shop). Patterson Hood, Kelly Hogan, Magnapop, Carnivores, Back Pockets, something for everyone. $20 at the door. Patterson Hood - Pride of the Yankees Carnivores - Darker Days Kelly Hogan & the Mellowcremes - Hanky Panky Woman

Save Criminal Records benefit at Star Bar tonight. Donations at the door. Proceeds to Criminal Records. Kudos to 4th Ward Heroes for organizing the event.
Filed under: News , Holy Hell Facebook For the last few years, Record Store Day has been rife with groups releasing rarities, limited-edition vinyl and other items to celebrate the good ol' pre-digital days of buying albums off actual shelves. But that music nerd holiday may face a blast of tragic irony this year as Record Store Day co-founder Eric Levin could see his Criminal Records shop closing on Nov. 1. [...]

Criminal Records A few minutes before 11:00AM this morning, Doug Richards at WXIA broke the news that shook the Atlanta music-loving scene to its core: Criminal Records was closing as of November 1, 2011. For more than 20 years, Criminal Records has been the best-known Atlanta-area record store. Word of its fate spread quickly. As of 7:00PM tonight, it was the lead story on AJC.com and several other local news sites. I highly recommend Kristi Swartz's AJC article as well as Chad Radford's piece for Creative Loafing and the [...]

They're not dead yet ! Go support, Atlanta! oldmanasante : atlantamagazine : elisabeth : One of Atlanta's highest profile independent record stores plans to close November 1. Sad news. Sad news, indeed. Spent countless hours in there during college. And it's always on my list of must-visits on my trips back home.
Modest Mouse play a 25 minute set in September 2001 in front of Criminal Records in Atlanta. The songs they play are Paper Thin Walls, Third Planet, Trailer Trash, Lives, Diggin' Holes (later released as an Ugly Casanova track) and I Came as a Rat. Pretty amazing to see an entire set from the band at the apex of their creative juices. If any Modest Mouse fans want to talk about this we can, but I'm fairly confident that The Moon and Antarctica -era was when the band put [...]

My favourite music store ever— Criminal Records —closed its doors this past Sunday... it was indeed a very sad day. Thank you Paul, Josh and Jameson for 5 years of kindness and awesomeness, you guys will be missed!
Filed under: News , Pop Culture , Politics as Usual Barry Brecheisen, FilmMagic The installation of a statue of Chuck Berry has become mired in controversy in Berry's hometown of St. Louis, La. because of a disreputable misstep from long ago. The eight-foot statue pays tribute to Berry's legacy, as the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer's influence on rock 'n' roll is, literally, immeasurable -- way bigger than the eight feet of the statue. [...]
A sad day for Toronto's music scene: my all time favourite music store— Criminal Records —announced via Twitter and MySpace that they will be closing at the end of July. I am sure that more announcements/in-stores (?)/farewells (?) will come in the next few of weeks. For now, I want to give an early thank you to Paul and Josh + Criminal Records!

Even though it's her third effort so far, Current Affair Medium Rare was my first ever encounter with Britta Persson . It immediately and completely swept me off my feet with its clever lyrics and great melodies, and - as much as I hate to pick a favorite - is probably the best album of year for me. ~ Britta Persson - "Big Fuss" ~ While not quite as great as superioryouareinferior , Rae Spoon's Love Is a Hunter [...]

I'm not so spoiled and jaded by being a part of this music machine to have lost my basic inner fanboy nature, and let me tell you, as far as being a fanboy goes, UK-based Criminal Records know just how to feed me. First up, great news that The Kut are back in the studio preparing some new songs. For those who may not recall, their single (green vinyl 7") "Doesn't Matter Anyway b/w Closure" was one of my absolute favorites of 2009. The tightness of the riffing, the driving beat, the solid songwriting [...]
