Frank Yang A better writer might be able to come up with some angle that relates the sudden one-day cold snap that hit Toronto on Saturday and the long-awaited, much-anticipated local debut by Mr Charles Bradley at Lee's Palace, but sadly, all I can come up with is something like how it was cold outside but hot inside and that's pretty weaksauce, so I'll just move on. A little surprisingly, support for this tour came from across the Atlantic in the form of English power trio Little Barrie , who were [...]

Crooked Fingers' 2011 album Breaks in the Armor was one of the year's most underrated. If you haven't checked it out yet, it comes highly recommended from Earbuddy's Chris Bell. Eric Bachmann and company have released a new video for "Our New Favorite" from that album. Watch it below. Read more »
Brand new video from one of my favorite records from 2011. Can't wait to see them again in Austin next month.

A faixa faz parte do álbum Breaks in the Armor , lançada ano passado. Assista e tente conter o sorriso: ( via )

Kids! Kids are the best. As someone who's about to have his second, I am helpless before a music video that shows kids doing kid things like shuffle-toddling across floors and losing teeth and digging up ancient boxes of shredded, forgotten photos. (Actually, I'm not sure that last one is a kid thing per se.) That's what's going on in this Crooked Fingers clip. Pictureshow Films direct; watch it below. Read More...
Crooked Fingers have mellowed considerably with age, as Eric Bachmann has cooled down from his Archers of Loaf days. The ... Read the full article at http://www.prefixmag.com/media /crooked-fingers/our-new-favor ite-video/61695/

Autumn de Wilde Ben Gibbard's songwriting is kind of emo/heart-on-sleeve on the best of days, so how could he ratchet up the melancholy quotient now that he's officially Mr. Ex-Zooey Deschanel? By adding strings, of course! To be fair, Death Cab For Cutie's just-announced Spring tour was probably in the works well before news of his break-up was announced, but it seems appropriate that the Death Cab canon will be getting performed with an extra layer of drama thanks to the contributions of San Francisco's Magik*Magik Orchestra , who will be [...]

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

(My) Pop Music: My 10 Most Played Albums of 2011 We've done this 'best of' 2011 thing to death. Seriously, just thinking about it gets me winded, at this point. Granted, I could probably be in better shape, but that's off-topic. [...]

As blogosphere music geeks, we are all, myself included, prone to fits of indie snobbery. It's just the way it goes, but sometimes said snobbery ensures that we'll miss some pretty great records oftentimes based on an artist's name alone. In the same way a film snob might dismiss a movie as awesome as, say, Point Break (dating myself much?), one of us indie snobs may turn our nose at the mere thought of listening to a new record by Stevie Nicks [...]

This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Judging by this list, I needed music to be a salve more than a release valve this year. I also never expected my favorite album to come from someone who held the [...]
Frank Yang Okay, let's get this over with. More than any year in recent memory, 2011 was tough to distill down to a top ten - not because there was a dearth of notable releases, but because there was a glut of them. Plenty of records this year were good to great - from those you'd expect as much from, those who surprised by upping their game and/or those who you'd simply never heard of before - but head-and-shoulders standouts? More of a chore than I expected. But here are ten [...]

Thoughts & Video by Julie Stoller Photos by Chris March Crooked Fingers at T.T. the Bear's Cambridge, MA - 11/6/11 A NIGHT FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS - Many indie rockers, when looking for a breath of fresh air away from their main band, will gravitate towards folk-informed singer songwriting, and rootsy alt-country. It's a yearning for something stripped-down, more personal and [...]
I think my favorite is when you take off your socks after a long work day. It. Feels. Great. And that's when you slip into your comfortable cottons, ready to watch BriWilly on the evening news and eat your Hamburger Helper. We all have our favorite comfortable things. Eric Bachmann's voice comforts me. It is [...]
I caught Wilco's Austin City Limits taping last night. Some of my Instagram pics here and here . Was a great set that had them digging back into their catalog as much as they gave attention to their new album, The Whole Love . The highlight of the night was Nick Lowe's guest appearance for an collaborative jam on his own " Cruel To Be Kind " to close out the evening. Heartless Bastards will release their new album, Arrow [...]

Eric Bachmann brought 'Armor' to the Casbah // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

In another example of what's in a name, this Sunday's Brooken Fingers show approaches with little fanfare. Yet this trio is lead by Eric Bachmann who packed the EARL for three nights this summer when he rejoined his old band - Archers Of Loaf. Sure ten years of Crooked Fingers has resulted in some erratic output - some of which bears little resemblance to that old indie band - but the band's latest, Breaks In The Armor , may be its best. Take another bite at the loaf this Sunday. [...]
