* Agalloch - Into The Painted Grey / In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion from (((unartig))) on Vimeo . There is no now anymore, there is only when . I remember when music came packaged as a commodity on vinyl discs, then plastic cassettes, then space-age compact discs... now it's all MP3s on blogs and - wait, there it goes again. The now , it's gone. The now of MP3 blogs died sometime back in 2007 or 2008, but you didn't notice because nobody [...]

I've been hung up on this jam all day, so as I queue the play button time and again I can't help but want to share. "Globe" is the encore off of Crop Rotation 's newest EP, a four track intro to one of London's more mysterious, yet intriguing, duos. The first two minutes of the nearly seven minute track features various strings and twangs, reminding me of some of The Microphone's earlier recordings. Mix that with blissful vocals and immediately your mind wanders to Danse Manatee -era Animal Collective. Crop Rotation's arrangement is astounding, creating a [...]

Crop Rotation - Globe Few new jammers from Crop Rotations who we "blogged about" last year and this longer one begins with campfire chants lifted from straight early Animal Collective before lifting off into super-blissful Memory Tapes-style haze with those nice brief bass notes gradually creeping in hi-fi but with some peacey twitches and plenty of glo-ing melodies in this wide wave of electronics. [ Crop Rotation MySpace ]

Crop Rotation - The Good Guest Pretty intrigued by Crop Rotation's kaleidoscopic London club; all sorts of weird angles and colour shifts from xx-style minimalism, iced garage coolness (cf. J. Orbison) into serious positive club mantra hands-in-the-air territory. Totally fresh. Not surprised to see d-floor savants Teengirl Fantasy and fellow London sleeksters Celestial Bodies up in the top friends either. [ Crop Rotation Myspace ]
Back in the beginning, I wouldn't have called Goes Cube strictly a "metal" band, per se. More of an indie hardcore throwback kind of thing, with other varied influences. Today, all of those influences are still present, but the band has been moving more and more towards our shared love of metal. This started just prior to recording the first Goes Cube LP (titled Another Day Has Passed ); sometime back in early winter of 2008, before I actually joined the band. Since I became Goes Cube's bassist, we've written some thirteen songs and all of them [...]

"M.B.T." is MY song. Mine. In many ways, it seems like a lifetime ago that we first met up with Brooklyn's SUSU . In reality, it was almost exactly four years ago; which, in blog years is the equivalent of ten lifetimes. But you didn't click here to read my musings on bloggery, you are in it for the MP3, yes? We can do that for you. "M.B.T." is the first track the band has made available from their new album R and R and R , [...]

We usually get flooded by junk mail in our contact address here in Athens66 and it takes hour to sort the crap. However, there are times that all this sorting pays off. A mail from Polynya back in early August was such a case. I've received their second album via mail when I got back from holiday and I must say I was quite impressed. Crop Rotation is a mix of of pop, indie and shoegaze that really hits the right spots sometimes (although not quite always). It's nevertheless worth more than a few spins! [...]
A Polynya is an oceanographic term that refers to an area of open water generally engulfed by sea ice. The band Polynya do not provoke such imagery. Rather, Polynya come to us from fun, friendly, and gorgeous North Carolina, and their sophomore effort Crop Rotation sort of evokes more of that same feeling. Polynya is a group firmly planted in neo-gaze, or what I call "second wave dream pop" or "shadow dream pop." They don't exactly emmulate, say, Slowdive or The Catherine Wheel, which is probably for the best anyway. Rather, the [...]

To set up an admittedly forced dichotomy, in the world of musical enjoyment, there are two spheres: I. Creatively-pulsating, pushing-the-envelope, brain-bending bands that are forging new sounds, new ideas, and new forms with seemingly little regard or influence from past models (Yeasayer, TV on the Radio, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, etc) II. Straight-to-the heart musicians that wear their influences on their sleeves but come across as so earnest and real that their originality is never called into question (Cut Copy, or The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, for [...]

It's not often that you encounter a band that has a singular musical identity, both on record and on stage. It's even less frequently that this happens with a band that is no more than 6 months old... And that such a band steps away from the norm of the guitar/bass/drums setup and utilizies a wide array of instruments in the small stages and unreliable sound-systems of the Brooklyn club world makes the fact even more remarkable. Freelance Whales is such a band. Started by Judah Dadone after moving to Carroll Gardens [...]

I received a promotional copy of Crop Rotation , the second album from North Carolina band, Polynya, and as a rather beautiful personal touch, they also included a numbered screen print of their abstract cover artwork. Named after an area of open water surrounded by sea ice, this band creates a self-contained core of warm, honeyed sounds while sometimes bracketed by icier electronic elements or stirred up guitars, and the album title is apt considering the continuous refreshment garnered by the band's changes in direction as they till new musical landscape on each of the eleven tracks. While they [...]
Crop Rotation Londons Crop Rotation make beautifully eccentric compounds of psychedelic, electronica-informed pop that changes quite remarkably from song to song. Against the backdrop of an old-school drum loop, this track alternates between eerily decadent spoken word and bright-italo-disco-inflicted pop choruses, culminating with a shimmering and quite funky ending. File under: keep an eye out for. Crop Rotation - The Good Guest ( mp3 )
