OK, I'm back after giving you all time to soak in The Giant Panther's Top 20 list. It didn't look much like mine, but that's the beauty of having two writers that have slightly different musical priorities and tastes. We grew up in different eras too, but it's all good and hopefully that makes it interesting for the reader. Congrats to Ryan on his great list and thanks to all of you for coming to our site and reading it. We've only been over here on Wordpress for a couple of months now, but Ryan's post broke new readership ground [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK The prospects of a beautiful British summer have been raised considerably with news that Crowded House are to embark on a nine-date UK starting mid-May. Not only will the band be dipping into their considerable bag of hits but they will also be airing highlights from their sixth as-yet-untitled album. Band leader Neil Finn said of the album, "This 11-track album is exotic in parts, traditional in origin, through many a twist and turn [...]

Neil Finn is a deity of the highest order, so any decision he makes is likely to be a good one. Like, reforming Crowded House after a decade apart. In the meantime, he'd put out a couple of fantastic solo albums and an even better one with brother Tim, so creatively speaking it's not as though he needed to kickstart the old band. But he did, and 2007's Time On Earth was a masterpiece. My personal favourite track isn't one that got a lot of love in reviews, and it's not one you often hear even hardcore fans discussing, but [...]

At a recent Portland performance Liam Finn was a man possessed, bouncing between guitar and drums while looped beats and riffs blasted alongside him. Musical partner Eliza-Jane Barnes provided sort of a calming elegance with her sweet harmonies and delicate percussion. The chemistry is difficult to catch on wax. And while Finn's recorded output is tame in comparison, it does capture one thing-his knack for blending pop sensibilities with fearless noise experimentation. It's good stuff, and his 2008 debut I'll Be Lightning easily made TDoL's Year-End List [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Road Report With bands having to get out on the road more and more as record sales dwindle, and with live music becoming more and more of a draw around the world, it's rare for a band's tour dates to take on an exotic air. British Sea Power recently played Taipei; Moscow sees the likes of Crowded House and Manic Street Preachers taking to the stage; and U2 are set to play their [...]

Another Tuesday with nothing in particular to write about. I'm in the mood for some covers today, I think. Here's a few I've found over the past few years. The Swell Season - "The Auld Triangle" (traditional) I'm still giddy over the Swell Season show last week. This is a live track found streaming on their website. The Polyphonic Spree - "Love My Way" (Psychedelic Furs cover) This was issued as a b-side [...]

Photo: Davey Wilson Download podcast: Courtney Smith's review of Champagne in Seashells Download MP3: Liam Finn "Plane Crash" Liam Finn is a musical legacy. His is the son of Neil Finn, who is famous in his own right, but more so for bands Crowded House and Split Enz. The latter band was started by his brother Tim Finn, Liam's uncle, who also joined in to record and tour with Crowded House for one of their later albums, Woodface . [...]
Liam Finn live @ Dante's Portland, Oregon New Zealand's Liam Finn and Eliza Jane performed last month here in Portland. We weren't sure exactly what to expect from this musical duo. We had read a few reviews on Liam's debt album, I'll Be Lightning , as well as listened to a few of his new tracks off his latest EP, Champagne in Seashells, and were excited to see him perform live. Some background on Liam: He was born in Melbourne, Australia but calls New Zealand his home as [...]

I spent a little time up at Som Records last night after a perfectly agreeable walk from the office downtown in some lovely, warm mid-October weather, picked up the new Clientele and Manics LPs AND a bottle of wine, and took the long route home. True to his newly established schedule, Pete was ready for his last walk of the day shortly after I got back and out we went, the sun down now but still quite balmy indeed. He's pretty particular about where he does his thing, so I had plenty of time to meander [...]
Neil Finn is the legendary singer/songwriter who has made a lot of great music with Split Enz, fronting Crowded House, and on his own excellent solo albums. This past winter, he again brought together a large group of musicians, including members of Radiohead and Wilco, to play a series of shows in his native New Zealand. This time, the group took the band name of 7 Worlds Collide and recorded a double album of new songs, Sun Came Out . There will be a post on this blog next week about this album, (I have to listen to it [...]
Radiohead- Last Flowers till the Hospital Also known as 'Cogs', this song was part of the OK Computer recording sessions, but, as Ed said, "It was one that we actually tracked and it sounded shite." The song, as described by the band, had elements of David Bowie in it, and was a favorite of Colin's, who explained that while he knows all band members must be in agreement before a track is used on an album, he was still upset to see this one left off. The title apparently comes from a sign on [...]
