Germans is a sugary sweet moody disco collaboration between songwriter Julia Kwamya and producer Kurt Feldman (of Ice Choir fame). The Brooklynites’ debut track “Cruel” is a glistening throwback to the ultra smooth, pure synthetic pop of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Donna Summers. Its bittersweet folk ballad undertones and glitsy modern production introduce some unusual elements into the mix, giving the track a unique and haunting feel. Kurt and Julia first bonded over their mutual affinity for a dinky MIDI keyboard called the Miracle Piano Teaching System, first marketed as an add-on to the original [...]
The lead track from Black Marble's stunning "A Different Arrangement" gets a dreamy video from Ellen Frances.

Photography by Irene Sánchez Prieto St. Vincent 's Annie Clark may well be the biggest contradiction in indie music; extremely pale and thin, she kind of looks like a corpse. A beautiful, gorgeous, amazing corpse, but a corpse nonetheless. The contradiction comes when she picks up her guitar. How does someone so seemingly frail produce so much aggression? And how does that aggression come off, indistinctly as powerful and delicate? In her hour-long set at the Spotify stage on Friday, Annie, and her impeccably-dressed backing band gave a [...]

Last week we were treated to an impressive lineup on Jools Holland with Alabama Shakes , Jack White , and Grimes , and this week's episode was just as good. St. Vincent played "Cruel" from her latest album "Strange Mercy" , Damon Albarn dropped "Apple Carts" from his "Dr Dee" [...]

On a weekly to bi-weekly basis (depending on our motivation) Dead Horse March will be giving its contributors a music related promp t to answer. They will cover a variety of topics and will hopefully act as a window into our minds, hearts, and souls, showing what we like and the path that led us there. This week we asked our contributors, what artists or bands (if that's how they roll) they have crushes on. We didn't specify what a "crush" entails, instead letting everyone interpret it how they wanted. [...]

Sianna Plavin - Cruel [rough] This piece of gorgeous audio comes to us via Soft Cat member and Providence, RI resident Sianna Plavin, a cut that she pulled straight off her 4-track from two months that she spent in Baltimore writing. So tender, so honest and yet so dark. Per Ms. Plavin an EP is in the works and should be released in the next few months, to which I will impatiently wait for more pretty sounds from her.
Love Was Always Cruel, It Just Wasn't Cruel To Me is the new song from 19yr-old Mancunian Jordan Bolton . Following on from two EP's - Jazz Hands (2010) and Silver Age (2011) - Love... is the first of three new songs he's set to release over the next three months and is an impressive slice of laid-back, melancholia-tinged indie-rock with enough down-beat Northern charm to keep you entertained throughout. If you like what you hear then head over to his Soundcloud page to [...]

Like the cartoon wherein a baby wearing a sash inscribed with the current year waves goodbye to a hoary old man whose sash displays the year past, The Small Cities have concerned themselves with new creations during this time following the great annual refresh. Recently, their labors have been in preparation for the release of With Fire , a full length album slated to launch March 3rd, in tandem with a kick-ass release show that is taking place (unfortunately for those of us further east) in the Twin Cities. Amidst the storm of detail work and all around [...]

Another great year of music is coming to a close. Below are my 30 favourite international songs of the year (last week I put up my 30 favourite Irish tracks of the year). There could have been plenty more but I'm sure you'll find lots of other tracks to enjoy [Read more]

Is there another album that's been as consistently rewarding to listen to this year as St. Vincent's stunning Strange Mercy ? Possibly Glen Campbell's latest or CYHSY, but there's something about this track, "Cruel," that takes me over the top. On the record it's the lovely fuzzed out 80s sound that punctuates and pierces Annie's silky vocals. In this live recording (thanks GvB), there's a melodica -- that goofy thing that you played in elementary school music classrooms -- that makes the tune.

Acoustic / melodica version. Live at Good Records .

St. Vincent's album Strange Mercy is extremely ambitious. There are a ton of experimentation going on here, but luckily it works pretty darn well. I found myself getting into the album really easily, digging the weird sounds and melodies. My favorite song off the album is "Cruel," which opens up with gorgeous string arrangements, follows with dark undertones and even hits you with an awesome guitar solo. Cruel is just one of the great songs off Strange Mercy so I suggest you download the entire thing and listen to it all the way through.

Tweet Buy the album - Vinyl / MP3 / CD or Download it for free Annie Clark has gotten a whole lot of press lately. She’s been on the cover of Spin’s style issue and had plenty of wattage added to her star-power by places like Pitchfork. It’s a disappointment, then, that the album that’s getting the most buzz may be her worst to date. [...]
St. Vincent performed a special session for KCRW in front of a live audience on the eve of her album release. Enjoy a preview with the song "Cruel" and tune in to Morning Becomes Eclectic to hear the full session on October 6th Strange Mercy
