The bird's beak rat tat tatting against my house woke me up this morning, but I'm getting so used to it I fell back to sleep. When I woke up, I looked out the window, saw the gray skies and decided to lie in bed a while and finish reading the James Patterson novel 12th of Never (Women's Murder Club). Patterson must grind out a book every month which is probably why his novels are getting shorter and shorter like Mary Higgins Clark's did with all the blank pages between chapters. I stopped reading Clark. I fear Patterson is next. [...]
Crybaby from West Chester delivers sensorial lyrics through equally textured vocals to head-banging, mosh-inducing pop punk. The band is barely a year old, but their debut album, Coming Undone is a kind of melodic anxiety attack you want to repeat; think nostalgia for PTSD. Coming Undone is a smart and classic pop punk composition of ... Continue reading

Ides | Crybaby So much more than sorry sadcore. What draws me to Ides is an ability to make big, emotionally draining songs sound otherwise. They don’t drag or weigh on the conscience. They don’t even bring out your own personal, misery-sodden memories. Well they might. But not in my case. I find myself more concerned with nestling in all the hate and the drama, all the distortion, and embracing it. It’s raw and it’s exciting and it’s Ides all over. Taken from the ‘ Songs About Love/ Hate’ [...]

If there’s a common theme running through Breaking More Waves albums of 2012 it’s that a number of the records we’ve chosen in the series are flat out nostalgic. Yesterday’s choice Through The Night by Ren Harvieu was one such sepia tinged past-referencing record and today’s selection, the eponymous debut album from Crybaby is another. It’s easy to criticise these retromantic records but there’s a couple of clear distinctions to be made between recordings that simply imitate and those [...]

Hopefully, you didn't blow it out last night at Dan Deacon, and you saved just a bit of yourself for tonight. There are a few of shows going on that you should hear about. Get out and see some live music! First off is a "blues-inspired" night over at The End (yeah, didn't know that was possible either from our perpetual house of grunge) with Melon & The Mayhem, Jo'shua Odine, and 3 Birds. You can check out what I mean by "blues-inspired" with the tracks from Melon and Jo'shua below. Things get started around 9pm, and [...]
New video from Crybaby for the truly wonderful single We're Supposed To Be In Love ...

He may be a manic depressive and a schizophrenic, have been celebrated by Kurt Cobain and so the story goes once removed the ignition key from a two-seater plane he was in forcing the pilot to crash land, but never let it be forgotten that at his best Daniel Johnston was also a rather brilliant songwriter. And it’s songs that we’re focussing on here, because as we’ve already written at some length in previous blog posts the debut [...]

Danny Coughlan ( Crybaby ) has produced one of the finest pieces of work this year with his eponymous debut project [read review here ] and now the talented singer-songwriter is preparing to release more spellbinding material. Coughlan's forthcoming EP We're Supposed To Be In Love will see daylight on September 24, the first offering from that effort is the Daniel Johnston cover of "True Love Will Find You In The End." Download the glorious version in full [...]

People get Daniel Johnston fucked up. There's a childlike simplicity about his songwriting, both musically and lyrically, that sometimes throws people off and leads them to quickly dismiss him as basic. But in his simplicity, Johnston manages to strike the most complex feelings in the most honest, human way. Because of Daniel's unique approach to music along with his cult figure status among indie rock fans and musicians, his music has been covered a lot. Whether it's Jeff Tweedy, Eddie Vedder, Beck, or Conor Oberst singing, the strength of Johnston's songs always shines through. The latest cover [...]

a solo mind-clearing drive down a hostile yet familiar coast, a remedy for downheartedness simple and to the point. Crybaby - Crybaby (2012) 8.0/10 Helium Records The stage name taken by Danny C both ironically misfits and is a guitar strumming hand glove-fit for the music he masters through the powerful vibe of his voice and his brilliant first eponymous album – or more simply put, its irony is perfectly fitting. If “cry” and “baby” are part of the lyrics of this modern-day crooner, childish whining is the opposite [...]

While most retro-stalgia taking place in the indieverse is currently more aligned with the 80s and 90s, this song comes off strong as a nice throwback to a slightly older era. It’s pretty much gorgeous in every way, having a classic crooner feel coupled with some modern production techniques. Crybaby (aka Danny Coughlan) comes off a bit like a lonely Roy Orbison, but writing that just made me realize the Roy Orbison always seemed to be lonely. Enjoy! (unless you are in a really great mood…)

Crybaby's new single "When The Lights Go Out" is a slow rocking jam from Bristol native Danny Coughlan's solo alias. Featuring wistfully plucked clean guitar layered ontop of woefully smooth vocals reminiscent of Morissey and Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner, the tune definitely delivers...and then some. You can find the track on Crybaby's self-titled new album which is out now .

Before today, we had never heard of Crybaby and, in all honesty, we were not sure what to think of his moniker. Yet it only took 20 seconds for us to dismiss all previous judgement and focus on what is more important, the music. Named after the truly seminal soul song by Garnett Mimms and the Enchanters, Crybaby is the alias of Bristol singer/songwriter Danny Coughlan. 'When The Lights Go Out' a romantic and longing warm folk song exemplifying what you can discover from his debut self-titled album. Purchase Crybaby on [...]

Inviting, gently-stroked guitar riffs yield focus to earnest vocals that search yearningly for closure in Crybaby's song about lost love. There is no love lost here, though, for this naked track which sees Danny Coughlin's oaken voice placed over beds of reverb-laden guitar. "When The Lights Go Out" is a effortlessly beautiful single which promotes and embraces the best aspects of Crybaby's eponymous debut album, which you can buy here . Keep your finger on the slow, steady pulse of this Bristol-based artist and let his music warm you.

We’ve already waxed lyrical about the fantastic Crybaby , an artist that we believe has put out one of the most beautifully crafted albums of the year, and whilst the record is still very much a ‘quiet’ release word of mouth is spreading. This was helped the other day when the song When The Lights Go Out won the vote on Steve Lamacq’s rebel playlist on BBC 6 Music with 59% of the votes and therefore received airplay every day on the station. [...]

mp3: Cookies - Crybaby (A) mp3: Cookies - Crybaby (B) Cookies are the NYC trio of Ben Sterling (Mobius Band), Melissa Metrick, and Ian Ainley. Their fourth single contains two variations on the track "Crybaby", both of which feature Arcade Fire/Bon Iver saxophonist Colin Stetson. Somewhat in the vein of fellow Brooklyn band Ava Luna, Cookies put a unique spin on electro-funk pop, resulting in something entirely infectious. Catch Cookies when they play Glasslands on May 16.
Bristol's own Danny Coughlan returns with the latest single under his Crybaby moniker ' When The Lights Go Out ' from the fascinating self-titled debut album. I've been in awe of this project, a project that has Mercury Prize nomination written all over it, it's that good. Watch the clip for the sad tune above.

More trains this week, but this time I’m on one. The 12.06 from Oxford to be precise, wending it’s way slowly northwards, leaving MM in charge of the home fixtures. I’ll be stopping off at Darlo to check in with Harry, before docking in the land of MON to see my Ma. It’s a bit packed underneath my wing at the moment. It might be Friday, but the cat seems to have gotten my tongue, or has a weasel stolen my words? They’ve gone somewhere looking for some light relief, anyway. Mrs Mackerel x A [...]
