Watch some friends deal with their buddy's death to the tune of Crystal Antlers.

Everyone deals with death in their own personal way, but psych-rock outfit Crystal Antlers offers a unique perspective on the topic in their music video for "Dog Days". In said clip, a group of friends commemorate a dead friend by carrying around his/her ashes in various cups and cookie jars, as if said friend is still "one of the guys." For a final tribute, they channel the Vikings (not these ones , but these guys ) by setting up a funeral pyre and spreading the friend's ashes throughout the woods. Check out the touching last goodbye below. [...]

While it still definitely fits into the " young people going hammer " motif, Crystal Antlers' video for "Dog Days" is a little bit of a tone change as a group of friends celebrate a dead friend. Check out the Ben Fee-directed clip after the jump. Read More...
Beat L.A. captures the spirit of multiple generations of Los Angeles underground rockers, back when indie still meant unknown, overlooked, loud, angry, and awesome. Not content to stick to a specific decade or style, Beat L.A. edges on all the minimalist hard rock genres, from '60s-styled garage rock to punk, new wave to no wave noise. But here's the catch: The entire album is composed of cover versions by today's L.A. indie scene. It's a bold experiment, linking the present-day indie sound to the indie worlds of 20, 30, and 40 years [...]
If you've been following me on Tumblr recently, you'll know that I was lucky enough to catch Wu Lyf at the Troubadour last week on the final night of their tour with Crystal Antlers, which turned out to be a phenomenal show. While the young band's musical prowess was on full display throughout most of their set, their passion and theatrics were certainly what set them apart from the many bands I've seen over the past year. It's also the reason fans reciprocate that same passion during their rowdy performances, the one at the Troubadour ending with a lengthy crowd-surf [...]

Crystal Antlers ' previous record, Tentacles, was pretty bad-ass in itself, but it wasn't quite up to par with their intense live shows. The frantic energy wasn't adequately captured on the first LP. A couple years later now, the band has tightened up their signature 3/4 grooves and extended psych jams both live and on the record. The new album perfectly captures the live experience, which is heightened partially due to Ikey Owens (Mars Volta) acting as the touring keyboard player and the producer of the new record. I miss the drum corp solos from the old incarnation [...]

It makes sense that these images of WU LYF were rendered in black and white. Is there anything more appropriate for a band that has given us the starkest and more darkly potent record of the year? Contrast between the darker and lighter shades seems like the only true path to exploring the primal force that makes them shine. Check out Troy Burki's pictures of them above and go check them out in the future. Apparently, it's life affirming. DOWNLOAD: WU LYF - Cave Song (MP3)

photos by Toby Tenenbaum Crystal Antlers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg " The [Crystal] Antlers 's new Two-Way Mirror (Recreation Ltd.) offers more proof of a band that could aim for tight songwriting if they pleased, but chose to do otherwise. The whiny organ in "Way Out" and the skronky sax in "Always Afraid" are more about mood and texture than about conventionally handsome sounds. At the same time, Antlers' music is growing more sonorous and confident with experience: "Summer [...]

I figured with my previous show being devoted to songs that remind me of sleep, this one would be the opposite. After a few bouts of standard indie rock, things got thick and loud. A shout out to my buddy Brett, for tuning in from Sedro-Woolley. Next time I'll have to add Tullycraft to the list in honor of how we met. The show began with a song off one of my desert island top 5 albums, and ended with a track that's nearly thirty years old. [...]

I am super stoked, not only is it Friday and it's only 102 degrees outside, but I just got word from my man Psyko Steve that Crystal Antlers are coming back to town in October. Fortunately for just about everybody they are playing at The Rhythm Room this time around. I guess they have so much more awesomeness than the Trunk Space can handle… I guess . Their most recent album Two Way Mirror is pretty great so you should get that for your ears to enjoy. [...]
