In all forms of art and expression, sometimes less is more. There's an art to getting right to the point, chopping off all the extra and presenting an idea as succinctly as possible. In music, this often means the sub-2:00 song. These tracks often get dismissed as interludes or filler, but sometimes they're anything but that. Here are the 25 best songs that clock in at 2:00 or less. Click “next” or hit shift+right to read/listen...

The Sea and Cake – Harps [mp3] (from Runner , out Sept 18 th on Thrill Jockey Records ) Lushness from dream-pop originators Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt. In follow-up to 2011’s The Moonlight Buttergly, Sam Prekop continues to experiment with synthesizer/sequencer based foundations that provide a canvas for further experimentation that is only complete after the players in The Sea and Cake all have a chance at “finding” latent elements within the song. It's Friday, and we're back with another installment of our regular roundup of downloadable MP3 goodness from around the web. This week, we get very excited about a taste of the new Swans album, even if it's only a truncated edit of a truly epic-sounding track. There's also a non-album Dirty Projectors track, Thurston Moore's new band, new work from Crystal Castles and The Mountain Goats, suitably whacked-out hip hop from Flying Lotus and Raekwon, and a suite of Scott Walker remixes. In other words, there's plenty of interesting sounds awaiting you after the jump, and since they won't cost [...]

"You are the music while the music lasts." -T.S. Eliot The Babies - "Moonlight Mile" Bold move, copping a song title from the Rolling Stones, but The Babies get away with it, as “Moonlight Mile” is the strongest—and most focused—song yet from the side-project of Vivian Girls’ Cassie Ramone and Woods’ Kevin Morby. Ramone’s fuzzed-out guitars quiver while Morby takes lead vocals, warning listeners to “watch your step, out on the moonlight mile.” The vibrant production, organ flourishes, and wall of guitars are a far cry from the half-baked ditties [...]

In an interview with NME published earlier this year, Crystal Castles member and producer Ethan Kath guaranteed that despite a potential summer release date, the duo's next album would without a doubt maintain their signature dark electro-goth style. "Every song we write is bleak," sad Kath. "We don't want anything else." Although there are still no specifics on the new album, the duo released a new song tack titled "Plague" earlier today. Check out the new track below, because really, what's bleaker than a plague? [...]

Lollapalooza rolled out its schedule today. We already knew who was playing . Now we know when they're playing. For 90 bucks a day, I'd like to see a robust lineup that I can get excited about from noon till close. Personally, I only see one day that lives up to my expectations for a full-day, engaging lineup: Friday. As for the top-billing acts, Coldplay, Muse and Girl Talk all headline Friday night. Saturday night's headliners: Eminem, My Morning Jacket and Beirut (on the small Grove stage). Sunday features a two-hour [...]
The organizers had too much music on their plates this year that it could not be contained in merely 2 days, a third day had to be summoned. The 6th edition of this now 3 day festival goes down @ Parc Jean-Drapeau July 29th, 30th and 31st. Last year's lineup was pretty much unbeatable. Expectations were high for this [...]

This week, we're starting our 2008 music recap. A lot of great albums and tunes graced the year of '08. We're not sure how many shows it will take, but we're going to fit in as many cuts as possible. Of course, this has to start chronologically, so we started off with some of the best releases that opened up this year. It's a podcast from the past! Things I learned at some point this weekend: There's a great interview with Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff in Found Magazine #4 . Also, Found uh, founder Davy Rothbart and Sheff are working on a documentary project about children's amateur video filmmaking. Pick up the ish for more deets... (Thx to Summer Anne for the tip.) Apparently, Joanna Newsom marketing machine -- which cruelly bypassed the entirety of the blog-o-sphere, leading to ruffled feathers and leaked tracks -- seems to be focused entirely on semi-quirky fashion (i.e. Nylon ) and [...]
