Following on from last year's adroitly punishing collaborative Carter Tutti Void endeavour alongside Nik Colk Void of Factory Floor, onetime Throbbing Gristlies Chris & Cosey here return to the comfort of intimacy as Carter Tutti and indeed to a degree, Coolicon sees them revert to the motorik intricacy intrinsic to much of Transverse . Though whereas that was then an exploratory, and so too sporadically challenging affair – its songs built with about the same sense of urgency as Darwin's proposed evolutionary theorem, despite being live recordings from a one-off Roundhouse date – this forthcoming [...]

Chris and Cosey hit the sweet spot between Clarke & Ballard (any sufficiently advanced technology is undistinguishable from magic, and any sufficiently diffused technology is undistinguishable from furniture – NB the latter was never stated by JGB, but rather ascribed to him by, say, Warren Ellis, in his criticism of Ballard’s ‘banal future’ Cf. ‘ How to See the Future’ speech). Neither of these (admittedly caricatured) situations/positions is desirable, because they are both disempowering. Chris and Cosey’s portrayal of technology resemble an animists’ interaction with nature – organic & complex, in a McLuhan or Cybernetic way, but full [...]

One of Throbbing Gristle main-man Chris Carter's many side projects, CTI (also featuring Cosey Fanni Tutti) released the seminal album ' Elemental 7 in 1984. Always ahead of his time, Chris was one of the first people to record using the 303 and 808 drum machines and the whole album of this album is awash with the rhythms of the future laid atop Cosey's otherworld soundscapes. A truly beautiful record. CTI - Dancing Ghosts

The video above did inspire me to want to do something. It was made a few years back by Dylan Haskins who, at the time of writing, had just announced his intention to stand in Ireland's upcoming election, as an independent in Dublin. He definitely deserves your attention with this [Read more]
Injecting vigour into the reigning instrumental music scene Clare band C!ties infuse power riffs, ambient sounds, ghostly chorals, electronics and even some drum and bass beats into post-rock arrangements - hear for yourself on Breaking Tunes . A constant on the live circuit the trio impressed our own Daniel Harrison in Galway when they delivered "a set that not only brings the volume but also wrong foots you with deft twists and turns, with the band switching between pounding post-rock, guitar-led grooves and electronic flourishes".
The band has only been going for three years but already C!ties are living the jetsetting lifestyle. Attempts to talk to Sean Hurson were scuppered when it was discovered he was catching a train in Europe. Who knew that life was so glamorous for the Ennis three-piece? As it turns [Read more]
If the previous Out On A Limb Records split-7” tour (Windings and Vertigo Smyth) was a relatively mellow, low-key affair by the label’s standards, the teaming-up of C!ties and Guilty Optics is enough to melt the face of the most hardened gig-goer. C!ties, an instrumental trio from Ennis, Clare, tear it up with a set that not only brings the volume but also wrong foots you with deft twists and turns, with the band switching between pounding post-rock, guitar-led grooves and electronic flourishes. The upstairs spot in the Róisín Dubh is as tight as [...]
The brilliant Out On A Limb record label put out their first release in a long time during the summer with a double-side single from Windings and Vertigo Smyth. And now, they are giving us some more. C!ties and Guilty Optics are put together for OOAL 0015. Guilty Optics play [Read more]
Having kicked off last week in fine style with shows in Belfast and Dublin, the IMRO Showcase Tour 2010 continues with a second date at Dublin's Crawdaddy and a visit to the People's Republic for a show at Cypress Avenue in Cork. Here's your guide to who's out and about this week... Thursday, April 1st – Crawdaddy, Dublin Home Star Runner Support slots with such heavyweights as Paramore, Fall Out Boy and New Found Glory might suggest to you that Home Star Runner aren't some [...]

Exclamation points in a band’s name doesn’t necessarily make the music they create any more interesting, if anything it’s a pain for those of us onliners not familiar with the shift key. But, allowances will definitely be awarded for acts from my home town especially when they ditch the fiddle for some decent electronics and traditional indie sensibilities. C!ties debut self-titled EP is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but is populated with enough ideas to point to an act with oodles of potential. The ‘C!ties’ EP casts its net far and wide, is loud in places, tender [...]
