MP3: Bubbly Mommy Gun - "Cuckoo Lungs" The playfully ambitious "Cuckoo Lungs" is the first track on Bubbly Mommy Gun's upcoming album, Sand Roses. The oddly named group are from Atlanta, and their penchant for quality experimental pop has already earned them acclaim from Japanese psych heroes Acid Mothers Temple . With "Cuckoo Lungs" you can see why. What begins as a streamlined funk bass melody quickly turns into a more jazz-centered effort, initially brought forth by hectic trickles of keys that allow the whimpering vocals to subside into [...]

The first few bars of 'Cuckoo' will confuse your senses with a familiar warmth if you are a fan of Zola Jesus and/or Broadcast, but when Tessa Murray's soft and hypnotizing voice begins to coo in a tone that implies the transmission of delicate secrets, you will realize that you are making a fresh connection to an important new band producing dream pop with their own finely tuned twist. The London-based Still Corners , who recently put out their first full length record with Sub Pop, Creatures of an Hour , blend pitch perfect electronic pop with a [...]

In anticipation of this weekend at Cuckoo, I couldn't help but share my excitement that Jack Hamill has shared this awesome fix up of his own The Love Quadrant. Undeniably one of Space Dimension Controllers more notorious tracks, some would argue it was perfect the way it was. I would agree with anyone putting forth that argument, but I also appreciate the edit as he has taken the dreamy original into an entirely new place. The talented musician cut out the original vocal samples and held on to that wonderful synth lead, adding some distant verb to create an even [...]

See that image on the right, there? That's the egg of what is known as a cowbird, a bird which, a little like a cuckoo, tricks other birds into raising its young and therefore is able to avoid doing any fucking work itself. I hope you can see how I would think this a suitable image to illustrate a rant about fucking remixers. I was actually intending to use a picture of a parasite to illustrate this particular post but, honestly, I couldn't stomach the Google image search. It would have more accurately illustrated how I [...]

This week's round up of the tracks I've not had the space to post ... The Saturday Guy From: Bandung, West Java, Indonesia Despite the name The Saturday Guy's acoustic folk pop is perfect Sunday morning music. This could be the antidote to the overblown caterwauling of the X Factor. [...]
i Cuckoo Chaos suonano dal vivo Jesus Flag American Fish per la serie White Horse Session .
Hailing from San Diego, Cuckoo Chaos take in influences from Africa and Graceland on their frustratingly short debut LP. It's clear from the first few bars of Woman's opener, "Jesus Flag American Fish", that somebody at Cuckoo Chaos HQ in San Diego has been listening to Paul Simon's Graceland. As far as starts go, it's a good one -- indeed, there are people around who almost equate a fondness for that record as a prerequisite for personhood. These SoCal souls are about more than just combining indie rock with afro-pop, however. With demonstrable interests...

Tweet Usually, I’m pretty harsh when a band doesn’t change their sound from song to song throughout an album. Somehow Still Corner’s new album, “Creatures of An Hour” , has made an exception to my rule. Lead singer Tessa Murray's voice laps across the surface of the instrumentals in haunted, echoed, and modal tones. The trilling beat of the drums persists throughout most of the tracks, rarely slowing down or speeding up. The keyboard [...]

You'd be forgiven for thinking that ANBAD sometimes wilfully ignores breakthrough bands in exchange for focussing obsessively on the agonisingly obscure ones (and you'd be half right, too). So while other music blogs scrambled to be first! to cover Cuckoo Chaos a couple of months ago, I have allowed their music to reach my ears in it's own time - i.e., when I'd finally got around to clearing three months' backlog of emails. Still, there are distinct advantages to this approach. As a payoff for being a month and a half late in their [...]

So, CMJ. It's begun. This year we decided to get our shots in early, in some sort of a sado-masochistic attempt to be as lifeless by Sunday as possible, apparently. That means a party last night, and a party tonight. For Tuesday night's bill, we joined forces with Popgun Booking to present NJ wit/punk firebrands Titus Andronicus. They played for over 90 minutes and to countless fist-pumps, until roughly 2AM, and thus were perfect for our ad hoc shattered-by-Sunday strategy. It is unethical to critically assess the performers on your own bill, so we'll leave that to our friends [...]

Cuckoo Chaos comes straight from the coast of San Diego. The tags on their Bandcamp say they are tropical dance jams. Those words and influences from Talking Heads are basically who they are. Each track from Woman breezes through your ears with a coconut-y aftertaste. Perhaps, we can compare these guys to coconut milk, effortlessly rich and nutritious. Woman was released on September 12th and here are a couple of samples. Download: Cuckoo Chaos - Jesus Flag American Fish [...]
