By Alex Brenner Cute Boots - Born and Raised EP I'm probably a bit biased when it comes to this band; probably one of my favorite Atlanta bands out at the moment. I'm not sure if I was really drunk one night at 529 but I swore during sound check they did a pretty sweet version of Springsteen's "Darkness on the Edge of Town." On that alone I was pretty excited to get a hold of their new EP, [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Titus Andronicus w/ Screaming Females, Diarrhea Planet Saturday, March 10 The Basement - 1245 Glenwood Avenue SE in Atlanta 30316 Admission $10 / Purchase Tickets Really tough call this week. I could have just as well gone with White Rabbits at Variety Playhouse or the Hijacking Music SXSW Bon Voyage Party at the Cottage. And, really, you can't go wrong with either show—they both feature stellar lineups at terrific venues. But you knew what I [...]

Cute Boots Born and Raised [Self-Released, 2012] 4 out of 5 stars Purchase This Album: Band Site On their new three-song 7-inch, Born and Raised , Americana outfit Cute Boots do their best to span both sides of the sound spectrum pairing spirited rock with more pensive and moody material. Side A's "The Fire," posted here back in November , is a rambling, high-energy foot stomper that sounds like [...]
It seems like the EARL is sold out from here to eternity (so to speak) but there is one opening in their current string of sold out shows and it comes up this Saturday. Get out to see Atlanta's own Sealions playing in the middle of this Saturday evening lineup. They will be joined by Cute Boots and Natalie Prass. $7

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Manchester Orchestra w/ Chris Staples Friday, February 24 The Earl - 466 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 SOLD OUT! It took me a while to work my way into Simple Math , the third full-length from hometown heroes Manchester Orchestra . My initial reaction was one of disappointment because it seemed to lack the ramshackle pace and sonic heft of their breakthrough LP, Mean Everything to Me . The melodies were certainly there, bold and anthemic, and it [...]

So January turned out to be an absolute monster month for Atlanta music. I mean, if you had any doubts about the strength and vitality of the local scene heading into 2012, the past 32 days should have gone a long way towards quelling your fears. In addition to some strong releases from established veterans like 4-IZE and—most impressively—the long-awaited return of All the Saints , January also saw up-and-comers Wowser Bowser and Shook Foil make big strides on the strength of their respective releases. But, for me, the record that really stood [...]

Here's a collection of songs by local artists that just missed my 2011 blogging season. All of these deserve their own blog post, but I haven't had the time. So instead, I used them to build a mixtape. You can click on the album art images below to find more about each song: Shook Foil : "The Monument" Cute Boots [...]

2011 was the year I dove headlong into local music. I listened to just about everything I could get a hold of, scouring through Facebook, Bandcamp and Soundcloud in my attempts to discover as many local artists and as much local music as I possibly could. But even now I feel as if there's so much out there that I'm missing out on. New bands and artists seem to to be sprouting up every day and the landscape of Atlanta music is constantly in flux, morphing and shifting into something unique and different. And so while the list [...]

Ever since Cute Boots released their eponymous debut EP back in May, I've been eagerly waiting for them to return with more of their earnest, sepia-toned take on folk and Americana. As it happens, a few weeks ago the band launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a new three-song 7-inch entitled Born and Raised . With 21 days remaining, the five-piece have already drawn close to accomplishing their goal and fulfilling their financial pledge. With the funding secure, we should begin to see copies of the new record hitting Atlanta in January. [...]
