Isn't it something that we get cut up and sewn up? ...Just a thought for the day. And now for the news: LOS ANGELES - JANUARY 31, 2012 – Due to a medical emergency, the upcoming performance of CocoRosie, scheduled for Saturday, February 11 at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex , will be postponed. The new date is Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 8PM. Sierra (Rosie) Casady underwent routine surgery and will need additional time for the [...]
This song isn't new. But we've never posted it before and why not now??? Close-up on the pores and unkempt face hairs and teeth of a guy singing a garage rock song, drinking from a bottle, maybe about to leak blood from his lips, maybe not. It's a natural song with a natural face. The recording of this catchy tune is much cleaner than the protagonist's underwear, dontchabet? And can't you imagine the springs sticking out of this song's couch? It's charming, Shirley Rolls. —Daiana Feuer

It's easy to imagine Emily Lacy living inside of a giant old tree, and fairies come to her for wisdom about saving the world. For the past few months, Lacy has been rallying for the revolution with her Occupy shows in town, and she's teamed up with producer Scott Barber to put it on virtual wax. Opening song "Beat" reveals she's riled up with some psychedelic details and plenty reverb. The big tree she lives in, it has great natural reverb chambers. Flowers bloom out of its cracks when the sound escapes. "Country" is a catchy battle [...]

grace oh Every rainbow owes its existence to a rain cloud, and that dark space between the two is filled by Corridor's music. As Corridor, Michael Quinn has recently released his second album, Real Late, with Manimal Vinyl. It's heavy, intense stuff that wields a fine metal edge to reveal something beautiful. We went into Quinn's house and sat him on the couch between L.A. RECORD 's Dan Collins and Daiana Feuer to simulate the kind of claustrophobic intimacy that brings human nature bubbling to the surface. [...]

Warning, this video is N.S.F.LUNCH. Unless watching people chew with their mouths open makes you happy—as demonstrated by Doña Nicha, this two brother + 1 cousin +1 neighbor family band grown in Southern California. "Sandwishes" is two swishy guitars and a swoony melody of swirled together words that guide us through a minute and a half long wash of noisy shoe material. The video created by The Great Nordic Swordfights makes eating yucky things a metaphor for love. The family that eats together, and spits on each other, gets its faces melted off together. Here are some [...]

Photo by Grace Oh Some people seem transported from a parallel universe, sent here to make this world a little more magical or strange. Like Mia Doi Todd—she seems out of place standing on a street corner. She should be floating on a carpet, leaving a trail of flowers, or accompanied by a river that washes the city clean of all the creeps and malevolent vibes. Listening to her latest album, Cosmic Ocean Ship, a little bit of cosmic energy seems to seep in and that parallel universe becomes visible. Suddenly, you wish you [...]

Sunset Junction has been canceled. You need a permit to put a ferris wheel and indie rockers in the streets. But, really, the Junc supposedly owed the city 6-figures from last year and it was pay up today or Public Works shut you down and though we can imagine some really cool action sequences to muster up the money and a trip to Vegas by a hopeful street food vendor, the dough will not rise from the kitchen and so you'll have to stick something else in your pre-heated weekend oven. More info here [...]

Random Patterns reveals new songs and there's cowbell involved. Known for its parts and progressions and long jams, the band explores (or records) itself in a new way here on "Cans All Day." The wall of noise is clearer, more like a window. That's just a warm-up for "Raw Luck," a really cool Random Patterns experience. It's full of nice smooth contrasts. Something pretty in the melody comes at you quickly and strangely, like it's leaking. MP3: Random Patterns "Cans All Day" MP3: Random Patterns "Raw Luck" [...]

Illustration by Dave Van Patten Download Frank Fairfield 'Poor Old Lance' (from Out On The Open West out now on Tompkins Square Records) Frank Fairfield might actually be from another universe that's evolved different notions of time, past and future, old and new, and perhaps truth—he certainly plays old songs with old technology, and dresses old-style, that seems true. On this album's first song, "Frazier Blues," the banjo strikes up, and Fairfield sings low and close, so close he's breathing in your ear about a hundred [...]

Merle Haggard is putting out a new album this October with Vanguard Records. Below, get a free download of the title track, "Working In Tennessee," an upbeat, happy, swinging tune that sounds grudge-free but, according to the official document, "underscores Haggard's oft-confrontational relationship with Music City." Haggard is loved, afterall, for his simple way of confronting things he doesn't like—as candidly or poetically as he pleases. Has he gotten softer rather than harder as he wrinkles with time? Perhaps, but there's always some remark somewhere on the album that's 100% Merle badass. We look forward to it! [...]

Today, Ariana Delawari premiered her (self-directed) video for "Be Gone Taliban" on IFC . Armed with a bandolier of butterflies instead of bullets, Delawari shows her toughness, her passion, her grace and dance skills, and still looks darn cute and lovable. This video should have come with ceramic figurines of her in the orange and her girls in blue (see minute 1:19). IFC concludes that she has the goods that "would make a Taliban's head explode." I don't know if that's grammatically possible but it'd be quite the accomplishment! —Daiana Feuer

cover by ward robinson This wild little guy has been out for a second but we were so busy with shows , shows and shows that we didn't get a chance to make a huge deal about it! So behold—L.A. It's interesting to see the ways people are exploring the meeting point of folk and classical instruments. Here's a banjo and a string section. His new album is called The Jessamine County Book Of The Living . Matt Bauer dips into the hauntedness of things, so a "Blacklight Horse" is probably not a purple glowing stallion at a rave. That's Jolie Holland singing with him on this song. Want to see the video? Matt Bauer "Blacklight Horses" Bauer plays [...]
www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjThby lqXdI I thought "There Is No Light" was a cool song when I heard it in 2009, then it happened to shuffle in on my ipod during my 2011 exercise routine, and I came to appreciate its coolness on another level. My exercise routine is a form of one-person porch soccer—skill is less important than doing some sort of stuff with the ball to the beat of some music—dribbling the ball in circles or quick ninja-like bursts back and forth in the few feet of space between the door and porch furniture, down the stairs, [...]
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-KJcU kENmY All those poor stuffed animals burning alive sets a fun tone for the song "Monk" by Mini Mansions. Tonight, Mini Mansions is playing its first show "in a while" according to the band, and it's free, at Central Social Aid And Pleasure Club, a cool venue with a mysterious name.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sF1OU bcNkM This psychedelic MASH UP features some crazy bits from the songs "Sick & Dying" by Amanda Jo Williams and "Sleep Tonight" by Jeffertitti's Nile. I showed it to someone this morning and they said, "This makes me want to barf...in a good way." Thanks! Jeffertitti's Nile and Amanda Jo Williams are playing Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace out in the desert on July 2nd . —Daiana Feuer

Here is one lyric from Tom Waits' next album. That's all. — Daiana Feuer
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vbj22 O7bVU This skateboard video created by Eli Stonberg is dreamy, simultaneously fragmented and well-matched to the song "Pure" by San Francisco's Blackbird Blackbird. It was filmed "on a rare rainy day in L.A." with six tiny cameras attached to the body of skater Aryeh Kraus and three more cameras filming him from afar. Think about this while watching: if the camera is our eyes, then that makes his arm our nose.
