Supergroups are of two varieties: a heterogeneous mashup of styles (e.g. Oysterhead), or like-minded, stylistically homogenous artists (e.g. Wild Flag, Cream). At first glance, Rocket Juice and the Moon , comprised of Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) on guitar, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on bass, and Tony Allen (Fela Kuti) on drums, falls into the former category. Yet Albarn and Flea have totally absorbed Allen's Nigerian funk soundworld while still contributing their own idiosyncratic stamps. The result is a highly enjoyable album of Afrobeat music accented with edgy bass and artsy guitar/synth melodies. "Hey, Shooter", with guest vocals from Erykah [...]

Not sure how I missed this yesterday over at Stereogum , but the very bizarre "supergroup" comprised of Damon Albarn, Flea, and Tony Allen released the first taste of what its forthcoming full-length might sound like. And, contrary to what that absurd moniker might lead you to believe, it is not terrible. Not terrible at all. The first single features Erykah Badu on vocals, and it's a spaced-out-funk-jam held together by Flea's (surprisingly) inoffensive slap bass groove. Either my man-crush on Damon Albarn runs slightly deeper than I had heretofore been aware, or this is quite possibly good. [...]

Damon Albarn. Flea. Tony Allen. Eryka Badu. So, I wasn't really sure how all of those names fit together, that is, until I heard this song. I was fairly skeptical about this "supergroup" for a couple of reasons. 1) Their name is, well, not good... This is, of course, my own opinion, but it sounds like a middle school garage band trying to come up with something funny and cool. And 2) The bandmates themselves demonstrate such a wide range of musical styles, that I figured it would be a bit of a crap-shoot in terms of how their sounds [...]

Earlier this month, we learned that Rocket Juice And The Moon - the unlikely and awkwardly monikered supergroup of Damon Albarn, Flea, and great Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen - were planning on releasing their self-titled album next month and that it would feature appearances from luminaries like Erykah Badu. Rocket Juice and the Moon is a recently formed supergroup consisting of Damon Albarn, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tony Allen, drummer of Fela Kuti.
